The one thing I noticed was it looked like the weirdness with the throttle seemed to happen towards the end of the flight. I was wondering if that may line up with a certain flight condition, like lowering the gear, turning on lights etc, and something with that is what caused the abnormality. It is interesting to try and disect, thanks for the video.

Had the same experience 2 years ago. Running jetti as well and in the log, I gave 100 percent throttle and it took almost to the ground till rpm started to come up. In the end it stalled. Mine caught on fire. Nothing left in my case. As you know, people will always be negative. You build and play with more jets than most ever will!! You are more of an expert than 90 percent of them. It happens. Just have to move past it. It sucks but it's part of the hobby.

Excellent video as always Jon. It was good with the Data to pin it down to something Usually just known to the Electron Gods. After watching the Crash a few more times {amazing what one does not see on the firs View} bummer all the same the Bull was such a nice Aerial Vehicle and am stoked ya getting another. It is obviously a component issue as you have flown the ELAN since with no issues so a lil Electron got funky somewhere. Once you look at the video again you can see exhaust out put drop off. Ya did great job getting it back as close as you did but sometimes airspeed is just lacking for the last bit like that 777 at Heathrow. Whilst at the Jet met I was at in March they had a Tucano Turbo Prop and a Panther Jet had 2 restarts each real quick 4 seconds {Kingtech } to relite both happened in spots which were survivable Luckly. Although the Tucano had a filter issue they found later on the Panther couldn't find any issue. It would be nice if ALL THE DICKHEADS with nothing constructive to say would go suck oxygen somewhere else just losers who probably don't fly and are just Armchair RCers. Anyhoo carry on and keep at it chap. ;0}

Great analysis Jonathan. A number of years ago, I had a P100 Rx do the same thing on final. I was lucky, It was in a CARF Rookie (almost impossible to stall) and just stretched it to the very end of the strip. There was no reason that I could find for rolling back to idle. The engine never did it again but had a catastrophic failure of the compressor wheel at about 5 hrs of total run time. It's now a desk ornament. Fantastic video as always.

Great video. I just bought a CARF J-10 used. Has Kingtech 210 with 17.5 hours. Third flight had flame out and couldn't make runway. Landed in a huge ditch which broke up the fuselage pretty bad. Had plenty of fuel so not the issue. Removed turbine and noticed tail cone loose, almost falling out and a few blades missing. Will send to Kingtech for repair and hope they can diagnose why this happened. Very costly event.

Thanks for the video. To me, the throttle moving is likely a telemetry issue. The telemetry is published by the ecu and as far as I understood your video, there is no fluctuation in the ecu data. To me the root cause is whatever caused the restart. I find it fascinating that you had a flame out and a restart so quick that nobody noticed.

Great analysis Jonathan! A few questions of mine and observations come to mind. 1) While those battery voltage/central box voltage drops and spikes aren’t large, that could be indicative of a battery surge. What were/are your battery individual cell voltages? Do they stay balanced? If a cell dropped out the system might have blinked so to speak causing an issue. 2) The V-speak module could be faulty and caused the throttle to go haywire and somehow sent feedback to the Swiwin ECU causing the restart to occur. 3) This I found online but Swiwin ECUs and Jeti equipment take in/process RX data and inputs at different frame rates and May not always agree. From what I see is that Jeti uses “Auto” frame rate mode with most electronics but Swiwin likes 11ms frame rates. I wonder if the computers between the radio and V-speak and Swiwin ECU somehow overloaded each other when the frame rates didn’t line up and caused these glitches. Electrical problems are the hardest to diagnose. 4) Those antenna signal drops are a little head turning for me. If they occurred around the same time as the central box voltage drops and amperage spikes/drops, that could be interesting as well. Just my thoughts. The engineer in me always wants to know why something failed.
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc Жыл бұрын
Thanks Klaus for the educated and thoughtful questions 😊 1. I didn’t specifically check the batteries but the batteries used are new and still in perfect shape. All charges on them have been good. 2. Unfortunately my #1 culprit at this point is the Vspeak. I have spoken to a few other fliers and it has raised concerns. Now Vspeak for Swiwin is the only type to my knowledge that handles the throttle signal through the vspeak. Not a dedicated throttle separate lead. This is a concern for sure. For now I have suspended installing them. Super elan had it pulled out. Kinetix not installed. 3. Yea your correct on the auto thing. Have to set Jeti to a number. I typically use 11ms.
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc Жыл бұрын
4. The antenna drops are still transmitting but on the scale of 0-9 it’s hitting a 2 or 3. Now I use a clone in my aircraft so no visual of the signal strength on the clone. Only the primary. Because there are 2 antenna on the primary if A1 hits 2 but at the same time A2 is at 8 then no issue at all.

Man it is such an emotionally painful exercise trying to work out something like this. You did a great job under the circumstances and only the fuselage was a fatality, so hopefully you can get a new fuselage and be up and running again soon. To me it had to be a fuel supply issue, or an electrical issue. So I'd check your fuel supply and all electrical connections and you should be good to go!! Enjoy and look forward to it getting up in the air again real soon!

Hey Jon, sorry for your loss. Maybe take a look at the failsafe mode for throttle to see what throttle level is to see if that throttle position for failsafe corresponds to the log. If so, then that is what could possibly happen. There is another possible scenario, but it usually only occurs with Spectrum radio systems that I know of. Let’s see what this leads first. I had exactly the same situation last year with my Viperjet/Behotec Turbine, that ended in an external landing in a cornfield…The engine slowed down to idle within around 1 minute. The strange thing was, without any changes, I could start again after, and it passed all tests, so I never found out the real reason… As you told, its always easy to be a keyboard hero, if you are not in the situation. I lost 2 planes already by technical malfunction, that maybe would be avoidable with the today’s knowledge…your plane finally stalled because you pulled too much in the last turn…there would be a chance if you keep the nose a bit more down…but again…we are always more clever after and I remember 3 emergency landings that I would have done better on a second try, but thats life snd not a computer game…so just let it go…you did the best you could do in the situation 👍

Very fortunate to have this level of flight data. Could shed light on component failure or at least deviation beyond normal operation. Wondering if flaps up and gear up configuration is a consideration during crisis flight management. Since you fly off a grass field maybe a belly landing would minimize damage.........just a thought. But as you say, at the altitude you were in the pattern as well as being down wind, the options where unfortunately limited.

From a "real" instructor pilot of Full scale aircraft... just a note of advice. never EVER raise flaps after introducing them during a reduced or no power approach. Once you put them in you are stuck with them. That is why we teach never ever lower flaps or gear until you have a forced landin field lined up straight and makeable. And never EVER try to make it back to the runway, we call that the imposible turn. Hence NEVER make any turns on power off aproaches esp. with flaps, and if you ahve to make only very shallow turns. @3:50 You would have been better off putting it down in that feild gear up landing and try for a soft landing. But that last turn killed all your energy and you raised the flaps killed all your lift. But of coarse everything I just told you is for REAL airplanes. have no idea about RC planes, aerodynamics are the same little or big. Anyway, very sorry what happened. You put a lot of work into it and you are amazing in your builds. Sorry to see it end like this.

Hi Jonathan, you may check the engine again with the gear and servos connected to the receiver. Then cycle the gear and the servos (especially the flap servo) under load and check if you can repeat the issues. Not sure if I get it correctly, but it seems that the problem occurred primarily after take-off and before landing. So actuating a faulty gear controller or flap servo under load may cause interference with the receiver signal. This would also explain with you had no issues during run on your test bed.

Going to the air is always a risk. Sometimes your perfectly built and prepped plane gets a gizmo and there's nothing you can do. I lost my HSD F-16 due to a microwave tower performing stress test nearby. The signal was lost and the turbine went to idle and plummeted into the ground. Just the elevator servos were salvageable.

Hi Jonathan, With those fast throttle swings, seems as though the receiver was responding to some erroneous throttle signals. They would be very difficult to track down. Were you using a new receiver? Keeping fingers crossed the same doesn't occur again. You and the family stay safe.

Perhaps there is a connection problem in the transmitter; The cable from the throttle axis to the pcb; Perhaps a plug is a bit loose in one of the pins .... so that there is an open input, with a free fluctuating voltage.

What was your battery voltage and current with respect to time telemetry? To rule out the pump one most look at an open or shorted condition. If the voltage of the pump lowers and current rises this is an indicator of a load. That’s a normal attribute of a motor. If the voltage goes up and current goes down, that would be a attribute of a no load condition. The capacity of the battery should be able to sustain both conditions. I would suggest an observation of the behavior of a full power vs idle power. This would exhibit the load on load off attribute of the pump motor and battery. It seems to me that the pump motor went down to a steady state we shall call it limp mode for simplicity. Excellent analysis and I own a Jeti system.

So maybe you can rethink about cutting the flaps when slow and no power at all. Had happened a lot on airplanes. In about 1980, i almost stalled a Cherokee 6 overloaded took off with ice cream to the islands. I took off too early dark night towards the atlantic ocean, The airplane was not cert for IFR. lost all reference in the dark, instruments were bad, felt the stall at about 200 agl, Quickly popped out flaps to 25, then lowered the nose a bit and the sinking stopped. I was a Bush Pilot in South America and learned always to take off with some flaps and land with flaps too. The trick saved my life more than once. We used to take off overloaded often.

I'm no "keyboard warrior" but please explain to me how flaps, made to change the angle of attack of the wing and allow the airplane to fly stable at slower speeds would ha e caused you to stall "sooner" if you left them in. You hear the beep when you put the flaps up and the left wing stalls almost immediately. Please explain..
