I was Jon’s 7th grade social studies teacher for a semester at Eliot JHS in Altadena, California. One day when I was preparing to administer a test, I told the class they had 10 minutes to study before the test would start. I saw Jon writing something on the palm of his hand and decided I would sneak up behind him, tap him on his shoulder and surprise him. I did just that. But he held his palm wide open and showed me the words he was writing. He said “I’m writing a song, Mr. Williams.” And indeed he was writing a song! That’s how I learned he was a musician.

I'm very surprised. I remember Jon B came to Indianapolis for the Black Expo in 2000 I think him and my youngest daughter had on matching fur jackets. He signed her picture as his little sister. We still have it and he kissed her on the cheek. He was so nice and warm. I'll always love his music. He's old school R&B like any other black R&B artist as far as I'm concerned.

Many of the 90's artist have gone silent so no wonder I didn't notice he was not active. There was quite a few of them that drop off the face of the earth for a good amount of time. Jon B has some hits and I’m glad he’s in a better place. It’s hard when you see artist fade away..from a fan stand point you never know all these behind the scenes issues they have. The days of real good R & B has faded...I can’t remember hearing anything now that would make me stop and listen and go wow...So I’m always listening to music from back in the day.
