Steve Darnell helped save our friends life Doug had a very low time of life after finding his brother who choose to leave this planet early . Doug was at a car show in Saskatoon with his pride of joy amc at 99.9 percent factory status . Steve was invited to the car show and ended up seeing Doug’s car and stopped everything to take Doug aside and have a chat with and. Make sure Doug would not go down the same path his brother did a few months earlier . We all took a trip to Vegas 6 months later and made arrangements to go to the welder up shop in Vegas . Again Steve did the amazing act. To start outside we where early and Steve pulled up in the 57 stopped and chatted with us and said hello to Doug . During the walk around and show ect he made sure Doug was front and centre and in part of everything for those few hours . After the show Steve asked us to hang around and he made sure Doug was better and doing well . Steve all of us are so thankful for your busy life and actions Doug still talks about you daily and weekly . Doug’s shop is finished and he is very proud I have pictures of his shop and he has the picture of you and him on the fridge still today . Thank you again Steve you helped save a friend . The only words to say to describe this is everyone here got Dougie back after Steve Darnell’s actions. Thank you again Derek

The Rat Rod craze has died down a lot...was strong back in 2007-2008 and a few more yrs beyond...much like the Bike builder's shows of the early 2000's, it all peaked out and ended.

I’ve toured the shop, …I’ve met Steve - nice guy. Only Steve and his brother-in-law there on a regular basis. The other cast members are only there when recording episodes. I’ve been there twice and still want to see it again.

I build rat rods with natural patina and as few dollars as it takes to build them safe, fun and fast. “The Beast” has won many awards at Denver area shows. I’m now building one based on an early 50s flat fender Air Force Jeep tub. The rat rod thing has died down here but is big in the Midwest. It’s my favorite car genre and I’ll keep at it even if I’m the only one left doing it here. Welder up builds high dollar hot rods that are interesting but aren’t low dollar enough to be considered rat rods

Sounds great Pat. Sadly such things are not allowed here in France. Though I could have one registered in England then keep it there for nine months of the year but that's obviously not worth it. I have built one car (KSK362) and drove it across the Sahara in 97. I am interested in seeing your work? What do I drive now? A Renault Scenic... There's no other hot rod/rat rod show or shop nowhere like Welderup is cause Steve is above and beyond the rest of em. He builds wicked rides and they all look fantastic while being in a class of their own

I ALWAYS HATED THE TERM "RAT ROD". Any Hot Rodder worth his salt knows the entire hobby started out as Rat Rods. Hit the Junk yard and pull whatever you needed from whatever vehicle was there. Or if you were broke, which many of the time were, you made what you needed.

The beauty of ratrods is they were meant to be built by the owners to be driven daily then shops like these started producing fake ratrods that can't be a daily driver. My favorite ratrod is my 79 ram built to be my company truck to pull heavy equipment

The entire shop is full of extremely talented people. I've seen a lot of crap in the 'rat rod' world, but these really are works of useable art. The welds, though, those stand above it all. They clearly know and care about what they're doing. Where Mad Max is full of movie cars (which only look good in film and from a distance), these are just the opposite.

Railroads are the greatest because they allow a person to be very innovative and think outside the box as to how they want to build a personal car that is just for them also I loved Vegas rat rods and I wish they would put five or six more seasons at together and yes if one of the Canadians got to spin off I would check it out everybody on the show is so very talented

Ratrods should be built by the owners and their friends because it's an art piece that expresses the attitude of the builder. I've built 3 ratrods. My favorite is my 79 Ram crew cab dually flatbed with the drive train pulled out of a school bus. It's a semi disguised as a pick-up. Satin black, flat black trim, flat powder coated push bars and headache rack, stackpipes 4 feet above the roof with propane flamethrowers, and neon green accent lights all around. I've even got train horns mounted on the roof. I use it as my company truck to pull heavy equipment. I haul my trailer queen show car with it and it gets more looks than my award winning show car (71 Plymouth satellite)

Before these overpriced garages popped up ratrods were hand built cars that were all about attitude and not about building trailer queens that only see the light of day at carshows. I've built 3 ratrods, 2 restomods, and one show car. The ratrods and restomods are more fun than the show car

These are not and will never be rat rods. They are show cars. True rat rods are built by normal people in their garage to be enjoyed without all the spit and polish. They are built to be road safe without any worry about looks. The trend started as a way to thumb a nose at high dollar builds that normal people would never be able to do. The term rat rod was a form of disrespect to the guys building them by owners of those show cars. I like his style but aint a single one of welder up's cars worth over 10k. He builds for looks alone and I doubt a single one is actually road worthy for more than a few minutes.

Rat rods are built from scrap parts of cars and bits and pieces that are lying about the place so the cars are rat rods - they are just good quality versions. The price is because of who's making the car - it adds some provenance / prestige to the vehicle. As for their road worthyness they are very road worthy and get used a lot - they've even been in a music video

that last part about putting junk together basically is what a rat rod is about - you take scrap parts from cars and mix them together with bits and pieces that are to hand or you find at a swap meet
