What Really Happened: WCW's Big Bang PPV

Eric Bischoff didn't try to buy it from Ted Turner as he no longer owned it after the AOL buyout of Time Warner. There's a reason most business experts say the AOL buyout of Time Warner which AOL called a merger. Was one of the or probably the worst buyout in history. AOL didn't have a clue about the industries they were getting into but acted like they knew best. Many top executives left Time Warner during their ownership because they couldn't work with them anymore. The way AOL treated WCW was a perfect example. It was TNT highest rated show by far. Literally averaging 2.65 in the ratings in 2000 their worst year since 1995 and more than what Raw and Smackdown are getting right now.

Both Jericho & DDP have said they would've bought the WCW IP, if they knew it was being sold so low. Selling to McMahon was strategic. Kellner knew it meant the death of WCW. No one goes from 67 mill to 2.5. It just doesn't happen. They WCW dead. They didn't want a bidding war, because a bidding war would get media attention. The ppl would start asking why a publicly traded company wants to get rid if something ppl are willing to fight over. There were independent promoters that could've afforded that 2.5. But they knew once McMahon was told WCW wouldn't be on TV, they knew he would never bring it back. Bischoff, Jericho, DDP, or some Independent Promoter could've rebuilt WCW into a nationaly aired show.

When I was a kid, I always remember seeing WCW on TNT and on Bravo in the UK. I always felt late 2000 and early 2001 WCW wasn't bad at all. I always felt the shows were actually coming together. I do miss WCW.

I agree! I enjoyed when Big Poppa Pump was defeating his opponents at every ppv, and the following day on Nitro him and The Magnificent Seven would have a funeral for his opponent that he defeated.

I was a SUPER fan during this time period as a teenager. I really wish Eric would have bought WCW. To this day I still watch old WCW on the network. They are very missed.

Fun fact: The main event of WCW’s The Big Bang would have had Diamond Dallas Page going over Scott Steiner to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship clean with a Diamond Cutter. Hence the name of the pay per view... The Big Bang.

How? Most of the better workers they had were gone already. Billy Kidman wasn't gonna be enough to carry a whole promotion. No Jericho, no Benoit, no malenko, no big show, now young talent. Sting, page, ddp, booker t, and flair were it. Kidman wasn't a main event talent push or not, where were they gonna get talent from?

I believe if Eric was to let the guys who just cared about the money sit out there guarentee contracts core guys (Goldberg,Sting,DDP, Booker,Flair) would still be on the roster... The NWO was bleed beyond dry... So this angle will end... WCW at this point would be in massive need to fill out its show... Eric would do WCW/NWA co promotion... Talent exchange and bringing in NJPW talent for a few months... New Younger talent could have risen and WCW could use more wrestling storyline and not compete with the WWF story...

Jarrett was still with the company in 2001. Maybe they would’ve lasted til the end of 2001 without any big success. Then rebrand as TNA so the WCW name wouldn’t be attached. 🤔

From what I underground, Vince had put in a "poison pill" going way back to Black Saturday. It stated that if WCW was ever up for sale again, WWE would have right of first refusal.

What I find funniest about this is that the biggest complaint the AOL and Time Warner execs had was the amount of money going to the top guys to do virtually nothing. So they sell the promotion and keep those top guys under their guaranteed contracts. So that they can do EVEN LESS for those same millions of dollars.

For as much as people hate Russo and say he put the final nails in the coffin of WCW. I'm more surprised they don't have the same level of hatred for Jamie Kellner. If it wasn't for him being the one to pull the plug on Wrestling on the Turner Networks at the time. We wouldn't have gone through an almost 20 year period where WWE was the only major show and we wouldn't have gotten TNA.

Intriguing as this is I wonder if AEW will ever want to use Big Bang and create a future PPV out of it since WCW never got to use it? Considering AEW only has 4 PPVs scheduled in their annual line up AEW should definitely add a few more to their yearly schedule. Big Bang would probably be cool as an AEW PPV.

One point you forget, in the dismissal of the WWE's lawsuit against WCW was the legal agreement that WWE had the legal right to buy WCW before any other offer was valid... Look it up if you do not agree, it is why Boshoff's partner was so pissed off...

And just like with WCW, AOL/Time Warner fired the only guy that had AEW's back and was the one who lobbied to put them on TNT. Hate to say it, but I can see TNT dropping AEW if their ratings don't start growing in a big way. Nitro was TNT's #1 rated program at it's end and was still axed. AEW isn't untouchable.
