I can give a bit of confirmation about royal events, as it were. My father-in-law had served as treasurer for the Battersea Dogs Home from its start, and was to attend an event and meet the Queen. Sadly, in the months between the invitation and the event, my father-in-law suddenly passed away (embolism). Anyway, the palace was informed, so my mother-in-law was told she could bring a relative or other companion, so long as they were informed as soon as possible (so they could vet the person). My mother-in-law chose my husband, informed them, and on the day, my mother-in-law and husband took a taxi to the event. The Queen spoke to each of them, and referred to the work my father-in-law had done for the Dogs Home and other work he'd done. Moreover, she mentioned charitable work my mother-in-law had done, and talked about my husband's time with Young Farmers and as a glider pilot. She did this with everyone at that event, without any prompting from an aide or checking notes, just being incredibly gracious and thanking the people there for their service.

Absolutely! This woman has no education, no good manners, and doesn't seem to be cultured. A fame-seeking and greedy 2nd rate little actress who never reached stardom in Hollywood. Being on the wrong side of 30, it was now or never and that dim-witted Gingerhead was her winning ticket.

It wasn't that she didn't understand, it's that she didn't care. Even though she said she was never told what Royal duties were, we know that's a lie as they always explain that to anyone who is married into the royal family. She just thought she could do what she wanted. She knew very well it was wrong to leave. I think that she thought everyone would secretly admire her for leaving what she considered to be a boring party. As usual, she misread the crowd. And as for being a celebrity, she never was a celebrity before she married Harry. She was an actress in a show. And I can tell you as an American that she wasn't very well known at all. That was it.

Both the Queen and Prince Philip had marvelous memories. The Prince met my nephew in Malta, shook his hand along with the rest in line, spoke to him briefly, and that was that. Thirty years later, my nephew was at one of the local festivals in a small English town which the Prince attended. He picked my nephew out of the crowd, shook his hand again, and led him aside to talk about Malta. Wonderful, amazing people.

The odd thing about it is Meghan Markle was never a part of Hollywood. She was a ‘not lead character’ of a third rate cable show. She wouldn’t have been accustomed to make an appearance and leave. I think in her wee little mind, she imagined herself to be ‘Hollyweird’ important. A vast (very vast) majority of Americans either roll their eyes at Hollywood antics or pay no attention. They are important in their own minds.

Very true! Meghan was circling the airport ( sort of speak) when she met Harry and immediately elevated her status as an actress " in her own mind"!! She was a "c" actress at best. She is the classic ambitious (in an over the top way) "Wannabe" that when I lived in Hollywood and would come in contact with these actors, they were the people you could not stand for more than 5 minutes. Shallow and fake that would make you cringe.

She was a supporting character in a television series hosted on USA cable network and filmed completely in Canada. I love to imagine the night William and Catherine turned on an episode of Suits to check out Meghan after Harry boasted about his new girlfriend, the American Hollywood actress ... which Harry later described as making William and Catherine 'fans' of Suits. At the Birthday Garden Party, footage showed H giving praise to his father in a speech and then exclaiming mid sentence that he had been stung on the ear by a bee. The camera cuts to M laughing/mocking Harry. Her undignified, immature, silly response to H's real pain gives even more credence to an attendee's report that the couple was high and reeked of alcohol and cannibis. It is probable that the couple's cumulative bad behavior at the Garden Party caused Charles to pull the plug on them and had them escorted out.

Harry's wife was never cut out for royal life, but I don't think we can necessarily blame it on her life as an actress. Princess Grace was beloved in Monaco after she proved to the citizens that she cared about them and their well-being. She reluctantly gave up her career in Hollywood and a chance to star once more in an Alfred Hitchcock movie, Marnie, once she realized how that choice would upset the people of Monaco. I think Princess Grace's strong family upbringing contributed to her sense of decency and duty to her adopted country. Whenever I think of American royalty, my thoughts always turn to Princess Grace, and I am proud to call her a fellow American and Philadelphian.

I would take that job all day long, to have an opportunity to meet people who work so hard in their communities, even if I wasn't recognized by them as someone special. After the dreadful interview, a few people were asked by one of the US networks what they thought of Meghan Markle's treatment by the Royal Famlly or 'the racism she suffered' - no 'alleged'. One interviewee was Michelle Obama who said 'Public service is a bright shining light and most people don't understand it. I always try and throw the light out to others who are doing good work'. Tom Bower said that the duchess underestimated the friendship between the Obamas and Queen Elizabeth and that's why she cannot make progress; she overestimates herself.

Many thanks for clarifying as to what occurred at that garden party; I was never quite sure, not having read the books you referred to. I also think Bower's distinction between royalty and celebrity is brilliant. I don’t think Meghan realised this when she married Harry. Instead, she seems to have had a Disney-esq idea in her mind of her role within the royal family. Edit: correction from Bowers' to Bower's

Another possibility in lieu of Meghan not realizing what she was getting into, which is a charitable characterization in my view, is she was aware and just didn't give a damn because she wasn't the center of attraction.. I mean, after all, why did she have to spend time with the little people when the cameras weren't on her?

I think Meghan expected Harry's to have more money (for her to spend) & that he would be smarter, i.e., someone who actually said something other than cliches over & over again. BTW, he is complaining about his entire family, but where are his buddies. Does he have any - left?

@@AnitaMRoberts-xh4de I don’t think Meghan was under any illusion that Harry was smart, ever. I’m sure she realised that he is actually dim before they married. She is someone who needs to be top dog when it comes to machinating and scheming; she’s then in control. He needs to be with someone who will take the lead because he’s clueless. The royal family (the institution) protected Harry, shielding him from exposing his inadequacies. It seems to me that Meghan rather enjoys humiliating him by proxy. Any clichés that manifest from Harry originate from his wife; she’s a mistress of tedious waffle.

@@elspethcoogan1499 Harry is not just clueless. He boasted of killing 25 Afghan civilians in THEIR land where, whether we agree with all their traditions or not, they were fighting for self-determination. In the face of protests from other players, he rode a pregnant mare so ruthlessly hard in a polo match that she collapsed and died once off the field. Queen Elizabeth criticized him for spurring another polo pony so hard it's sides dripped blood from gashes. His book was full of vicious, petty bile, and he has lied himself and abetted MM in all her stories. She just gave him the confidence and backup he needed to try to be what he has clearly long wanted to be--a king equal to or surpassing his brother in stature. The RF bears some responsibility, if any of the picture in Spare is true. Some sources say that William can be impatient and controlling, even with his wife, and that he pretty much dominated Harry, who put up with it for lack of a vision or encouragement to pursue it. Many attributes of some Roysls are admirable, but they are an uneven bunch and, seeing that their net worth is over 100 billion, I read recently, I'm not sure that I credit only their superior sense of service and morality for their supportive public services. The French Revolution taught them all something....

Very good point about an often ignored hint of Meghan’s poor upbringing. I have commented that Meghan was not prepared for a role in the royal family because she was brought up with a deadly combination: spoiled rotten by her father and given absolutely no social instruction. The elements that would constitute a good upbringing in an upper middle class family would include: being familiar with formal dinners and table settings, knowing how to issue and answer invitations, understanding the role of both the hostess and the guest, learning how to meet people and put them at ease (in other words, not thinking of yourself), knowing what clothes are appropriate at different times of the day. Very soon after coming into the family Meghan demonstrated that she did not have any of this preparation, nor did she have the humility to be corrected. The garden party is an excellent example. It’s nit really a case of celebrity culture versus the royal culture, it’s only evidence of Meghan’s lack of social graces in her upbringing.

They are there to thank people for their contributions to various charities, volunteer work etc. not the other way around.

Charles was sharing his party with the newly weds and with them sauntering off it left Charles and Camilla handling the whole party by themselves. It was not planned to be like that

For a woman like Megnut to have an opportunity to be a part of and a representative of the RF in the Monarchy is a miracle in itself!! Along with that came the opportunity of being known throughout the world, having respect among world leaders , traveling the world over and enhancing programs and charities that aided millions of people worldwide, to dress well, live in luxury, vacation in resorts everywhere, to become popular among millions of people the RF serve, and to be a senior member of a very select, small family form!! Yet this was not enough for a woman who thought she should be first in every scene of life, that she should be given more money than anyone could spend in several lifetimes, and felt she should have to follow no rules or traditions, not have to put out any effort to be catered to and bowed to by all !! Blessings like this rarely occur at all. When you throw them away and whine and cry for more you find yourself on skid row begging for a kind word from anyone willing to speak to you!!!
