Well, I must admit that when I said I rosined the crap out of the bow, I wasn't quite that bad! : ) I appreciate the humorous and helpful response, Jonathan.
@rofo21079 ай бұрын
I'm afraid Jonathan missed the point. Some cellos (Beginner's Cellos) are NOT RESPONSIVE at all. So the first question should be "Has your cello teacher tested your cello with his own bow?" If you have an unresponsive cello, sometimes nothing can be done about it. You can change setup, bridge, strings, bow, bow hair, rosin and everything and it sometimes never improve. Such a cello is too expensive for free. Many problems can cause that. Low quality wood. Thick plates. Bad bassbar. Bad soundpost, Bad graduation. Even such details like tailpiece can play a role. So the question was "I struggle with rosin and bow"and the answer was pretty misleading. I think it was not funny at all. SOmetimes it is a bow or bow hair. Sometimes strings Sometimes cello setup. Sometimes it is a cello. How you can be sure it was too much rosin ?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!

Thanks for sharing! You are funny, and it is tough to watch you apply so much rosin at the same time :-) PS: If you have the chance, please tell us about your wolf tone solution. My cello coach told me to "play around it", however I cannot help it... it just sometimes sounds glitchy. Without wolf I resonate at f, with wolf at f sharp. I was wondering, depending on the key, if you can take it off or put it back on for a respective key? I am curious to hear your thoughts. Thanks for getting us all started with cello!
@CelloCoach5 жыл бұрын
Great, just a great question! I will answer this in the next Q&A. During the interim, here is an reply: Our cellos can intermittently develop (or constantly have) a wolf tone. As humidity, temperature and barometric pressure change, so do our cellos' ability to produce sound. This "wolf" is a natural sonic anomaly, that occurs in the lower, right hand (if you are playing) portion of the body. By placing a weighted dampener, we MINIMIZE the wolf but as your teacher wisely stated, the tone is never gone, hence we literally have to play with that in mind. We can move the dampener up and down either sting to produce the right amount of dampening. As for key signature differences, you are spot on! Quality cellos can paint a canvas of over tones and harmonics that will invigorate other frequencies, hence if you have an F# wolf, then keys that excite that note sonically will bring our the howler in your cello. In the end, you are the expert on your cello. Not your teacher, not your luthier. You know what works and how to get the best out of it.

Hey Jonathan A newbie cellist and a new subscriber here. I had two questions that i am hoping you could help out with. First one is what cello music you would recommend to learn for a complete beginner. I do play other instruments as well but I usually rely on my hearing and don't read music sheets since I wasn't trained to read classical music. So it is a bit difficult to find music which would be easy enough to learn on a cello. The second question is that my low C string of a cello sometimes plays a full octave higher. I do believe that it some how starts to play a harmony due to not being griped enough by the bow. Could this be due to my bad quality rosin? I only have the rosin that came with the cello so i think it might not as good as you mentioned in the older videos. Kind Regards Rokas
@MGBode5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you are lightly touching the C string while trying to bow the G string hitting primarily the intended G string but also C string as well effectively playing a harmonic on the C string. Just starting out playing on the Cello the OEM rosin is not the major issue, try focusing on finger placement and bowing. Try playing any harmonic to see if that is the issue.
@Rokas1085 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the advice. It might sound strange but this actually happens when I play the actual Open C string. I don't press it hard or anything but when i play it sounds like its an octave higher. I don't play any other strings at the same time and when ever i play the other strings when ever they are open or not they sound fine. I got new rosin today so I hope this will help the issue. @@MGBode
@MGBode5 жыл бұрын
@@Rokas108 couple of thoughts one your bowing speed and pressure maybe too fast for your applied pressure. Try slower with more pressure, maybe full bow in a 3 count. Also your contact point, bow between fiberboard and bridge try moving away from the bridge. Different grades of rosin, tree sap, grips differently but varying speed and pressure should make up for some problem with lighter rosins. On sheet music, if you're used to tablature type sheet music for a guitar, I think you will need to just invest the time to learn traditional sheet music. There are endless apps, sites etc for learning traditional sheet music.
