As someone who’s done both several times as a teacher on a school trip, I agree with you. The thing that struck me listening to the commentary on the train is that the seats used to face the view until they had to convert them to carry troops during WW2. I first heard that back in the 90s and thought “and they haven’t bothered to change them back in 50 years?” … and now that’s 80 years ago! And I remember the windows of the train were dirty. When I took a relative once, we skipped the train and just did an afternoon return on the Skyrail, avoiding the morning crowds and the crowds from the train on the way back down. Skyrail is the better experience.

Chiming in from Perth WA (fun fact - the 2nd largest State on the planet behind Sukha in Russia which is mainly frozen arctic land) We holidayed in Cairns for couple of weeks 2 years ago. We hired a car & did a day trip heading Sth of Cairns to "Gillies Range Rd" which heads up the mountain (awesome winding drive up the mountain) stopping at the top at Lake Barrington (awesome tearooms overlooking the lake for coffee & food) and then head along the Atherton/Herberton highway to "Herberton Historical Village" (what a mind blowing place) and then heading up the National Highway towards Mareeba, then cut right onto the Kennedy Highway to Karunda and then down the winding mountain rd back into Cairns. We did stop at some waterfalls for swim but that is not necessary. It was a fun days driving up high on Atherton Tablelands. Make sure when heading up to Port Douglas direction that you spend half a day at "Hartleys Crododile Adventures" wildlife park. what an awesome place/experience seeing these massive creatures up real close in their natural habitat. The staff & croc handlers were very brave people - haha

The rail line Greg is only one small part of a much longer rail line to Forsayth in the desert regions of Queensland and the train the Savanalander does a four day trip with people on the train staying in local pubs at night. How's your leg now and have you fully recovered. I like how the title reads Rainforest Railway. Being an American I did think it may read Rainforest Railroad but we call railroads railways due to our English heritage.

It’s funny to see how an American sees cairns. I’m a Canuck, come, Swiss, come Aussie….yes I have 3 citizenships. Moved here 8 years ago from nsw. Must do something about Rusty’s markets if you haven’t already

Great video!, as a Kuranda local it was cool seeing what you guys thought of the beautiful scenery I take for granted. Next time you come, you need to go swimming at the top of the Barron falls. It’s a bit hard to get down but damn is it worth it. Jumping off a 10 meter cliff into a pond while looking out over the valley is just amazing.

Hi Greg, I agree with your assessment of the Kuranda trip … been there, got the photo, moved on…..The main thing I got from this is that you appear to be back to normal with walking …. I hope so and that you have healed up. Also good to see you with friends. You appear to have settled into your Australian life. Great to see ! Keep these videos coming 👍😀

What an awesome trip out, Greg. Good on you for getting out and discovering QLD. Those multiple waterfalls were stunning and I'm sure a drawcard for people to visit the area. Hopefully, there weren't too many more self-cringe moments? Also, anytime for more games of poker. Has your mate been working on those bluffing skills.

🚂🚃🚃🚃👍🏽looked fun mate definitely agree a one off. driving to Kuranda is much more economical and you can explore some of trails and look outs that are 4 mins by car but a not easily walkable by path in 1 hour. And then you can explorer further off afield like Mareeba and Atherton explore streets filled with culture and Mangos

@@gregjameson327Greg you have to Crystal cascades it's swimming hole place or you could use it as a walk it's nice place people mostly swim there I was there in Feburary didn't swim it's definitely a car ride situation to the base of the copperlode Dam. Also Mossman near port there's Mossman Gorge entry fee to see a example of the Daintree it's a similar swimming hole situation to Cystal cascades
@clubgus07

@@gregjameson327 I wanted say Crystal cascades is free entry compared to Mossman Gorge which is paid to the Aboriginal rights to see Mossman gorge. Both locations and watering holes you could swim or just walk em and view take lots of photos and both unfortunately require a car your push bike or public transport can't make it to these wonderful places

@@gregjameson327 Greg my initial response must have got blocked because the other word for Copperlode Reservoir is Da% but Crystal Cascades at the foot of the Copperlode D and Mossmon gorge outside Port are a great exercise or swimhole to visit when your legs is better cheers

Hey Greg, yes I agree with you…worth doing but no need to do it again. The falls looked good…normally this time of year they’re fairly dry. Would be great to see you visit more local attractions and let us know your thoughts. 👍

Very accurate description Greg train becomes boring unless one of your kids has red hair and your in a carriage with a tour group of Japanese school girls then it becomes a selfie central carriage...hohoho.

Thank you Greg, that train trip is well worth doing, once in a while, it was rather expensive i feel, especially for a young family.. The Barron Falls are spectacular during the heavy rain season. I will give it a 8/10 for the day out. 👍 nsw

(As a local) A fair review. Definitely a one and done thing. It's a bit different when you drive there and back every day....lol Like someone else commented, it would be nice to see you with some Aussie friends , preferably locals. They might be helpful in avoiding the traps and ensuring you see the best bits. Anywhere, local knowledge and contacts can open doors not seen by the average punter.
