I'm in my 60s now, yet all these years people have told me I was strange for looking and picking up rocks and putting water on them or licking them and collecting them and saying oh how pretty and I remember where I got this one from and yada yada. It's so nice to know I'm not alone! I'm going to turn my kids on to this video and they won't think I'm all that out of my mind now imagine that!

Found my first trilobites in driveway when I was 3. Been rock-hounding ever since. Don’t care what others think, don’t listen to nosy people whose opinions I do not value. And I was in school back when girls had to wear dresses. Mine had pockets for rocks.

@@norahedwards6490 They really are therapy. Fossils also. I've always thought that and when I'm out hunting rocks or fossils my mind is perfectly clear and I'm in a zone. I live in an area of SC that is in the middle of the state and everyone I've met who looks for rocks usually goes up to the mountain, or a small pay to dig site that is several hours away. We have a gold belt that runs right through the middle of the state and it's about a fifty mile wide area that runs from Georgia up into Virginia. I love to explore and I've found so many beautiful crystals within just a 20-25 mile radius from my house. I'm always trying to tell anyone that lives in the area that there are nice rocks. Just imagine all of the sites left to be found out there. I just love it so much, especially the peace. Take care 🙏

I can't even begin to explain what rock hounding was like 60 years ago in Western America in comparison to what's available today. Picking up football-sized pieces of jade on the Frasier River in Canada, spending all day at Oregon Opal mines that would pay for the vacation. Digging thunder eggs at 10 cents each in Eastern Oregon, and picking up Agate, Chalcedony, Jasper, Bornite, Corundum, Quartz, and Staurolite all over Idaho. Finding pieces of petrified wood so big it took 4 drunk dads and a wench to move them. Some of them I am sure are still where we left them next to their original divot. My father lined our yard with gem-grade obsidian and large lava rocks... it helped to have an available child workforce. We would drive to California for jade, jasper, serpentine, agate, tourmaline, petrified wood, malachite, fossils, and garnets. These long drives are where I learned I didn't like Country Western music much. I remember one summer "vacation" we had to stop collecting because we couldn't add more weight to a 1967 International Travelall 4X4 pulling a heavy cargo trailer, so we drove home, unloaded, and drove to the Oregon coast for a load of small coastal pine trees, my dad was into Bonsi too. Different times.

When I was young, I go to the nearby river and look for shiny black crystals and I clean them and I swallow them. Stupid me was influenced by a movie I watched about getting powers from eating gems. I wonder what the square black crystals are called. Edit: nevermind, I found them after googling, they're black tourmaline lol.

Hubby and i took the dogs to the creek yesterday so i could hunt for 'interest pieces' for my new stone garden, pond and fountain ive spent all summer building using locally sourced materials and repurposed landscaping pavers and plants. We were an hour in on the 'bank combing' and my husbands starts laughing out loud! After a few brief attempts to regain his composure, with frailty, he enlightened me to the vision that played out in his head as i take a few steps, pick up a rick and get giddy about another neat find, then a few steps more and my enthusiasm resumes. As he watches from upstream, he recalled a family guy episode......"ooh, piece of candy" ....."ooh, piece of candy" ....ooh.....🤣🤣🤣 It was a great day!!

Fantastic finds! They are all beautiful, but my favorites were the of course the carnelian, the palm wood and that blue agate.💙 At first I thought that moss agate was petrified wood that had been jasperized and agatized, also a favorite. The agate right after that one, with the white cap on it, is the kind of agate when cut really thin, usually has iris in it. I'm sure Theo, Kate, Kim or Travis could help with tips. Would be awesome if you have found your first iris agate! Thanks for sharing your trip and amazing finds with us Alex!✌️🤠

One thing I've always wanted to try when hunting agates on a gravel bar like this is taking a bucket out into the water, scooping some up, and carefully spreading the water out on the gravel, in hopes of making the agates pop out more in the sunlight. @@AgateAngler I've watched that part many times now and have discovered something really cool. I think it's a combo of my slightly older computer and the FPS this was shot in. Sometimes it's a continuous flight path until it vanishes, sometimes it disappears for a fraction of a second then reappears in a different spot then shoots away. As Lisa (largent45) noticed and mentioned in Discord, it is completely soundless. I also remembered that there were fighter jets you couldn't see doing something within sound range (which can be many miles).

This is my first time watching one of your videos. Do you open your finds up? edit: I hit play and you said it would be a good one to put on the saw. Lol question answered! Please do I'd love to see inside. Theo Kellison cut a similar looking one to mine and his turned out to be super blue inside.

Alex, have you thought about starting a Patreon account? The top tier spots can earn some of the smaller (read: easy to ship) specimens you are comfortable with parting with. You can also open an Etsy store to sell specimens, polished, unpolished. I believe you can do a live feed on KZbin where donations can be given. One idea is to do a live 1 day auction/sale in which viewers can go along with you as you rockhound the Yellowstone for say, a 4 hour block. Each time you find something viewers have the option to buy it from you. I'm sure you could figure out the logistics (such those who buy from you when you show a found item need to add the "time" in the live feed so you can reach out to them to get their shipping address. Brainstorm ideas; I imagine there are many ideas like these ones to help fund your new venture. Good luck and have fun!!!

Justin, I appreciate the ideas. I have thought about some of those before. I have decided not to use a patreon because I don't think I make enough regular content to justify people paying a monthly fee. I like your other ideas though and will keep them in mind. Thank you!

If you had a way to wet sections at a time the agates would catch the sunlight and glow making them much easier to see ... possibly throw some bucket fulls of water from the river .. I used to walk the beach and when it rained I always found more good stones ...Just a thought..!

When you get hot spray yourself with the spray bottle, as it evaporates and breezes hit you it'll cool you down. Travel size spray bottles are essential to my summers :)

Question on the Ace sprayer… can you adjust the spray to be a narrow stream? Might not use as much water to get the find clean…

Yes, fully adjustable just as you'd expect for a standard sprayer.

They are called Montana Moss Agates, they are called this because of the whitish coat on them, and are mainly found on the Yellowstone. I was born in Glendive, MT and had family as well as friends the worked with them, i also have a number of the but do not have a saw.

If you’re ever wondering if you’re holding a piece of petrified wood, or if it’s a sedimentary sandstone with an inclusion. Cut the end of it and check for rings. Polish it and you’ll see it even clearer. Usually petrified wood has agate, or Amber’s and such inclusive.

I am new to rockhounding and I live in Texas. I make sun catchers and I wanted to make some with sea glass and seashells because we are close to the water. Well I decided to start making my own sea glass. After reading up on it, I decided to jump in with both feet! I got a tumbler and started making the glass. After that I decided to go looking for rocks and crystals. Well I soon became very disappointed because I live in Victoria and there absolutely no places to go mining or rockhounding for at least 100 miles. Somebody asked me if I tried Pebble Beach. It’s actually the Guadalupe river with a gravel bar in our huge park. So I get there and realize this place is HEAVEN!!!! It looks just like this one that your at! I get down there and quickly realize I am so under-prepared for what I was gonna do. All I came with was a plastic bag🤣🤣🤣This place has soooooo many Agates, Jasper, petrified wood, Pudding stone. I have been there three times so far and I could not believe what I found there!! I found a rock with silver around it, Pink Jade and so much Agate/Jasper mix. This is turning into a huge habit because now I need a rock saw, drill stand for my Dremel, table stone polisher and another tumbler🤦‍♀️🤣🤣🤣I’m so addicted to this! I’ve started reviewing our towns mineral reports. I can’t believe I have found a hobby that’s like therapy😁
