Dutchman's Agates

Welcome to another video!
This is a long video, but didn't feel right to split up, so hopefully some of you like a longer style video. This was a 2 day hunt, although the second day wasn't as long.
This was an amazing hunt, and one I had been looking forward to. I found so many different things like banded agates, carnelian nodules, a seam agate, some mystery agates, larger agates, smaller ones, to jaspers, chert and petrified wood!
Hopefully you enjoy, and thank you for watching!
Tot de volgende keer
(Until next time)

You are right! A lot of people wouldn’t pick 3/4 of what you found up! I would! I love the littles. You found a lot of cool ones! The last rock you found that you thought was pet wood, I don’t think it was. Hard to really be sure through a video but there’s a rock that mimics pet wood. Although it’s super cool and I would’ve kept it too! I love your excitement and your gratitude! It’s funny and it’s refreshing! I’m about ready to go on my bucket list rock hunt to the Yellowstone! I can’t freaking wait! It’s been a dream for as long as I could remember! :) you earned my sub! 👍

Haha! Yeah every time I go on a trip I tell myself I'm going to be very picky with what I bring home. It hardly ever works lol. I will say that I end up going through them, and cull some of the less exciting ones, which I then leave on the trails in the park I live next to for others to find, who will hopefully enjoy them. The Yellowstone is an amazing place to find lots of cool stuff, maybe one day I'll make it over there! Good luck on your hunt, I hope you'll find lots of cool rocks! Thank you for your kind comment! :)

Thank you, I love finding them, it's addicting lol! The location matters so much in the different types and colors you'll find. Thank you very much for your great comment! That nodule was super exciting to find, I always hope for at least 1 like that on that beach. Hi, I have a question, why agates? are they valuable? always see them when I go to the San Juan Islands
@DutchmansAgates
@DutchmansAgates Жыл бұрын
Some specific locations do produce valuable agates, one being Lake Superior, but even then the value is whatever someone's willing to pay for it. The ones that have value are also rare, and the best examples to be had. I like agates because there's so many shapes, colors, bands, no bands, transparency, varieties, crystal pockets, etc etc. They're all different and unique, so finding them is always exciting to me.

This is the one spot I found myself with no outside help, so I'm keeping this one. However, gravel bars all along the Oregon (and N. Cal and Washington) coast should produce agates. @DutchmansAgates
@DutchmansAgates 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the ones with banding are definitely more rare, I did fine some though! If they're white with no banding it's chalcedony, if they do have banding it's an agate. If they're yellow/orange/red with or without banding I'd consider them both a carnelian agate. With banding still being preferred of course!

However, the Oregon coast is rich with spots to find agates, some examples include: beaches at and around Tillamook, Pacific City and Liberty city. Signs to look for: gravely beaches that get hit by the tide, allowing agates/jaspers to get washed up. I hope it helps

100% agree -- looks like a portion of a good sized flint nodule. I read through all the replies to make sure I didn't duplicate someone else's comment. Dark brown, reddish brown, slightly translucent on the edges, conchoidal fracture are all indications of flint. It's the same chemical composition -- silicon dioxide -- as agate, jasper, chert, chalcedony, quartz, etc. The clean fracture like that makes it superb for knapping into arrowheads, spear points, other stone tools. Nice find!

Whats it mean to hage bands? Is that good?

Yeah, the bands make it an agate, as opposed to it's base rock which is either chalcedony or carnelian.

Imagine how magical this area must have looked 200 years ago, before people began taking away the most beautiful stones.

Fortunately we as humans at least appreciate these stones.
