Although I’m not a fan of Rory, he is the adult in the room with his resolve to bring golf together. It seems the rest of the pga and board members are still anti Liv so bringing golf together objectively is not possible. You cannot come together and find middle ground if there’s no willingness to compromise and live with changes to status quo. Kudos to the pga championship for inviting Liv players but the majors can make it easier on themselves by inviting the top Liv player by their rankings instead of randomly inviting golfers who they deem are deserving. Take the choice of who’s deserving out of it by making it black and white based on Liv rankings based on performance. Obviously OWGR rankings are irrelevant here.

To me THAT'S the operative question. I also fault the media, including Golf Channel and these two hacks, who beginning with the June 6th meeting have referred to this as a merger. There is a nearly 40 minute video done with the guy who was actually doing the negotiations with the Saudi guy that led to the June 6 meeting. Throughout that the term "merger" was never used, in fact he made it quite clear that this negotiation would end LIV. Not a single media source that I saw EVER said that.

The issue with the PGA the last year or two is that every big name player barring Scotty has pretty much shit the bed with their performance. I dont think many people go to events to go see Scotty play as primary reason. Tney go to see Spieth, Rory, JT, Ricky hoping that they will win. Its come to a point where you have to start rooting for Scottie just to not be dissapointed. It took a while for the media to really attach to Scottie but since this year they are really blowing Scottie's horn now as if he's the new Tiger while that may be the case its more to get people to get reinvested in the PGA Tour by following Scottie rather than losing interest in golf because their usual stars are failing every week

Rory needed to stay on the board if he wanted to be on the board. He could have abstained from voting on SSG, if his connections were an issue, but everyone made quite a point of saying the SSG decision was unanimous so any conflict seems diluted and not much of an issue

Apart from the Majors and Players, there could be 10 elite events - 1 per month with 2 in Feb. This would be 15 events with players required to play a minimum of 5 regular tour events on PGA Tour and/or DP World Tour. The 10 elite events would be.a combination of WGC, Signature Events and LIV with an individual component and an optional Team component. The Elite Events would be jointly owned by PIF, PGA Tour and DP World Tour and they all benefit financially. Elite players required to play in regular Tour events would also support the rank and file players and allow a pathway to these Elite events. The Elite events would follow the LIV format with shotgun start and up to 72 players. There would still be a 3 month off season from early October to early February. Players would play on average 3 events per month from Feb to September with 1 in October.

Who is allowing the extra liv players, PGA or PGAT? It's the PGA's event. I wonder how the Tour feels about it. My guess is the Tour is hoping the anouncers will bad mouth the LIV players like at the Masters. The Tour is a dumpster fire and every move they make is clear they dont want anyone to know what kind of money the non-pro golfers rumning things are making (or something.) Theyre not accountable to anyone.

The PGA Tour now has some ridiculous purses for these signature events...basically LIV level stuff. Are they worth it? Are the players worth it? I don't thinks so, but it doesn't matter. LIV has changed the game to a more lucrative, and less competitive game thanks to Tiger basically. Tiger has grown the game way beyond it's historical demos. Now players make buckets by finishing 5th etc.. But nowhere is this more true than on LIV...guys collecting good cash even when they shoot in the high 70s or even in the 80s. BTW, there are tons of events now on the PGA Tour for the lower class players...there are like 45 events altogether on the PGA Tour. I remember when it was like 30, and hardly any golf after The PGA until January etc..

It’s also possible everyone is just tired of Rory. Anyone who doesn’t think Gooch belongs in majors doesn’t know golf. Data golf has him 35. But he really belongs higher. It would be pretty hard to get all the LIv players to boycott for Gooch, but they would do it for themselves later. Helps to be a teachers pet. But imo The pga tour needs all available names on hand and Adam Scott is a name, even Webb Simpson is a name at this point. Absolutely better golf course. What they did is restore what Mr Ross created. What a Name dropper. All casual at the end there.

I wish PIF would flex their muscles and just get Scheffler and McIlroy. They’ve got $700bn but they’re too tight with their money. They were able to get Rahm for $450m but unfortunately they’ll have to pay a lot more for the top two ranked golfers. The policy board members Woods and co have no desire to play outside of America apart from the Open. Pga tour has no appearance fees unlike DP World tour. Total Appearance fees in Asia are sometimes way more than total prize funds. Personally I only watch Majors and Ryder Cup I love golf but play it more than I watch it.

This whole chat about Rory’s vision and Cantlay’s vision and whichever Saudi prince’s vision is totally foggy and meaningless. Why can’t you just be explicit and explain what these visions are and what the main debates are actually about ? The only 2 elements that I noted are : - whether a future global elite tour should be significantly less US centered and travel more around the world (like the DPWT does!), despite the US players discomfort ; - what the proper balance should be between huge prizes and benefits for the star players, and the condition that the average rank and file players have to live with. I personally would introduce another topic which is prize equality between men and women tours, and especially grand slam championships prizes. The current huge gap is extremely embarrassing and shameful. What are the other topics being debated, and what are the standings of the different stakeholders about these???
@joso5554
@joso5554 14 күн бұрын
To me, the championship format and its appeal can be discussed but only within a strictly limited scope. The LIV format is not serious. 4-round stroke play must remain the norm. Additions may be considered around this basis, to bring additional excitement, such as monetary prizes for specific achievements during the round(s), that can be different each week or day. Different scoring formulas could be used for early qualifier rounds. Playoffs could use other formats than the usual one-hole sudden death, e. g. a 3 or 4-hole stroke play. Match play is obviously a delicate format for broadcasting, but it should still be present in few tour events. The WGC match play was a unique event that should be reinstated once a year - maybe in changing locations ?? A few tournaments could include 2 rounds of match play for the first 2 days, instead of the cut, and then 2 rounds of stroke play for the weekend. This would allow for wider fields (240 players for a 60 players « cut » after 2 rounds of match play).

The Majors are supposed to be independent and their invites should reflect them being objective when inviting golfers. Unfortunately, the Masters and PGA Championship have shown their pro-PGA bias in their invites...very obvious to see with plenty of PGA-nobodies invited and many better LIV golfers not invited. Anybody with half a brain knows the OWGR is irrelevant and in essence just a PGA ranking system. Even the Data Golf Ranking system is far from reliable...JT being as useless as he's been for the last few years is ranked low 30's, above Louis Oosthuizen and Dean Burmester...? The Majors can stop making this an issue which is driving LIV fans further away from pro-PGA Majors...just invite the top 20 LIV golfers to all the Majors. And on Phil's point which made you laugh: If there are eventually just 2 or 3 LIV golfer allowed to play in Majors, what would the Majors be but just 4 more PGA elevated events...?
Why isn't Rory McIlroy returning to PGA Tour's policy board? 🤔
