Zane, you are a great teacher and player, you explain things so well and I love your sense of humor. BTW, I had a chance to say hello to you at the Newport Beach event, you were kind and patient and I look forward to getting you to come to our club for a clinic, continued success and always, ALWAYS...PADDLE UP!

I've looked at tons of super slow motion flicks from a lot of top players recently, you aren't able to grip the ball and generate enough spin to tilt the paddle downward as you would in ping pong. It only happens on high balls where you are actually trying to force the ball downwards. Check out your own flick at 4:10 minute mark in your match with Altaf Merchant vs the Johns brothers from 2021. Your paddle face is slightly open on a ball you contact a bit above the net. If you tilt the paddle face down, the ball is going to go down. As Tyson Mcguffin says, "the paddle face doesn't lie." There have been a few studies on the how much more spin is being generated by some of these new carbon paddles and others, its pretty negligible. I've seen a handful of other great players like yourself give this advice on various shots, they think they are actually tilting the paddle downwards but if you slow it down you can see it's not happening. The same holds true for a roll or a forehand drive which are both generally hit with even more topspin I believe.

I'd like to know more about the possible wrist issues if this is from overuse or just bad technique. And in a normal game there wouldn't be THAT many chances for a wrist flick. I'm also wondering how the roll helps prepare the wrist for the flick since your wrist isn't supposed to move during a roll

Murray rocks.. lots of great info in the video. I shall call any shot into the ground the Zane shot😅😅. Seriously it is a great instruction video on the flick

This is awesome thanks for the information on how to attack the ball at the net. Im curious what the roll volley ends up looking like though, and why is rolling a volley a good thing?
@ZaneNavratilPickleball Жыл бұрын
Solid question. The "roll" is top spin which allows the ball to dip down into the court.

Generally you’re trying to reach as far into the kitchen as you can. This is because it takes space away from your opponent and the closer you get it to the net, the higher (normally) you can make contact!

Hi Zane, very cool shot! I’m not a 5 but i’d love to try this for sure. But it would be super helpful if you actually showed the shot in action - not just the drill. :) Can this work on drop drive? Can it be in “red” aka below knee?
@ZaneNavratilPickleball Жыл бұрын
Probably not in the red, but definitely in the yellow. I’d say that JW Johnson is the master of this shot. Check out some film of him!

lol, very smooth paddle promo. like how the dog just walks across the kitchen while you guys are drilling (hahahaha). thanks for doing this video. I've been really curious about how to develop a backhand flick volley. do you end up having to cross train with wrist strengthening exercises (when you are ready to develop the flick)?

Interesting question. I don’t, although it would probably be wise to look some up!

For balls well above the level of the net, do you ever roll volley or is it mostly punch volley?

Great stuff. In your Dink podcast ep w Ben Johns, you brought up the badminton player Hendry Winarto and his super compact punch…is this fourth step advanced shot you’re teaching basically what Hendry’s doing?
@ZaneNavratilPickleball Жыл бұрын
Hendry executes it a bit differently, but it follows some of the same principles. Hendry doesn’t have a ton of top spin on his but tons of velocity
@bobdoe4689 Жыл бұрын
The way badminton player hit the compact punch is by snapping the wrist and hitting it flat. The power actually come from the fingers.

Dude. I know it's annoying, and I wouldn't want to see a lot of Murray every video. But for this video, he stole the show. And, I really had fun watching you two interact. He's a character, and very cute all at the same time!
@edward1019 Жыл бұрын
It's against the laws of physics to have your paddle face downward and hit a ball below the net and get it over. And you double down by claiming you hit the shot with a forward push of the paddle, not an upstroke. Impossible! You are confusing what is called a "feel" in sports with what actually is happening. It may benefit you to "feel" like you are hitting the ball with a 20 downward face angle, but I guarantee you, if you slowed the film down, you would clearly see you are hitting the ball at a neutral(which would necessitate a low to high swing to create the proper launch angle to clear the net) to slightly open face at contact.
@peterbarrett54963 ай бұрын
Yes I think he needs to redo this video, it’s very hard to see what he’s doing and why don’t u just edit out the misses. Needs text graphics or like swing tracing streaks. Bad
