What’s a good machete for you?! Tramonita, Ontario, Cold Steel, or mystery blades? My favorite.

@@shawnlowhorn5009 a Rodman is the surveyor that does most of the hard work. The new guy that catches all the hell on the crew. A Rodman is a surveyor in training. They carry the prism rod that the Instrumentman shoots to measure distance and angle. They are some of the hardest working people in the survey world and you’ll probably never see one!! 😂

5 minutes 40 seconds in and already VERY good advice on lanyards. I use a lanyard but only put the thing on if I'm cutting something over water or somewhere that if I drop the tool, I'll loose it... like it sinks to the bottom of the river. Even then it's careful. Seen a machete bite someone that way once and don't want any part of that, especially how fast it happens. Good advice, Sir!

Hello from Australia . I’m not keen on lanyards either. I recently, last week, let go of my 12” Bowie and it ended up in my shin. If I had a lanyard, it may have hit my man jewels or inner thighs instead of hitting low. 5 stitches later I’m fixed. Tramontina (18”-20”) is my preferred machete. I have some Ralph Martindale and Cold Steel machetes too. I love my big Condor blades, cutting tools make me happy.😊👍🏼 Keep up the great work mate.

Damn, the wear on your old Tramontina after three years! But when you mention how often it can hit the dirt in your line or work, it makes total sense. I was gifted a Legitmus Collins & Co 1250 Bolo from 1940. It was a little rusty, some pitting, less than butterknife-sharp & the sheath was mildew central, but 45 minutes on a belt grinder, a vinegar bath, & a few days in the fresh air for the sheath, & I think I got a serviceable blade. I'll take care not to swing it close to the ground though. 😲

A working man’s machete can live a rough life!😂 It’s kind of why I recently started this search for good affordable blades. They’re almost a consumable in my line of work. I don’t think I could live with myself if I were to hit a barb wire fence or a rock in the ground with a $140 condor knife!! I certainly won’t be doing it with MY Legitmus Collins!😂

I have the best experience and use mostly Cold Steel machetes (really easy to modify them too), only downside is You have to reprofile the edge in 90% of them. Bought an Ontario Military machete, it’s heavy and robust, steel feels pretty soft tho and had to modify handle and add a flexible lanyard after it flew out of my hand when I was chopping some bushes while it was raining! Had to reprofile it too, because it felt like an axe, not a machete. I even have a few 3cr machetes from SOG and Schrade…. Same steel, but the Schrades get dull literally from carrying them, SOG does their cheap steel a lot better!

I own 2 machetes. My first was a Gerber Gator Jr that I got during a Black Friday sale last year, and the other is a Tramontina I picked up at Lowes. The Tramontina definitely feels way better in the hand.

I’ve heard that the Gerber machetes are subpar to what “Gerber” used to be. A few guys I know have bought them and been disappointed with the edge retention. I kind of want to pick one up just so I can see for myself though. How do you like yours?

When you have those "pommel" that are symmetrical like that you have to use more of a draw cut. Which is fine for a weapon in certain systems but idk why anyone would want a tool like a machete w/ a handle like that. However w/ the kukri, even though it uses a similar body mechanic & wrist position it has that forward canted blade which puts it out in front of your knuckles. Which helps.

Tramontina and Military Ontario are Great, but they are different beast ...the Tramontina is good steel and lighter with a wood handle, and won't fail you for under 1/2 " brush or branches, but that Ontario military is Badass 1095 carbon steel monster thats like a Katana in a machete profile, and cut through just about anything, but it has that plastic don't feel that good in the hand handle. The Ontario is a brute kicks machete that reminds me of a pry bar thats thin, strong and sharpened. Both Machetes you have to put an edge on the blade because the companies do a shit ass job to save cost by not sharpening it, but they both are awesome tools indeed.
