Background:
Hi Everyone! My name is John Simmerman, and I’m a health promotion and public health professional with over 30 years of experience. Over the years, my area of concentration has evolved into a specialization in how the built environment influences human behavior related to active living and especially active mobility.
Since 2010, I've been exploring, documenting, and profiling established, emerging, and aspiring Active Towns wherever they might be while striving to produce high-quality multimedia content to help inspire the creation of more safe and inviting, environments that promote a "Culture of Activity" for "All Ages & Abilities."
The Active Towns Channel features my original video content and reflections, including a selection of podcast episodes and short films profiling the positive and inspiring efforts happening around the world as I am able to experience and document them.
Thanks once again for tuning in! I hope you find this content helpful and insightful.

If one feels the need to wear a high-vis vest during a curated walking tour, there's a problem with the design of the walk. Honestly wish advocates would ditch the vests and simply walk in regular clothing rather than non-verbally imply that walking is inherently dangerous. Otherwise, solid info. Great video idea, John!

I can't recall whether I captured it on video or not, but one of the reasons Edward does this (wearing the hi-viz vest) is that it attracts even more attention and engagement from the general public... people coming up to ask what is going on... so it is not about "safety" per se, but a look of "officialness" and in fact we did have a local resident come to see what we were up to and decide to tag along and ultimately provided a lot invaluable local context and flavor. Cheers! John

The American Discovery Trail splits into its northern and southern routes in Cincinnati, so I'll make sure to spend some time exploring the alleyways when I find myself travelling through. Really appreciate the comparison with Chicago. Cool historical nugget!

It would be interesting to see one of these in a suburb

I’ve definitely done them in more suburban settings… wide streets, fast traffic, long distances
