The North Mountain Blade “Chop Kick Stop” is like the original Chop pocket knife, but this one has the Kickstop hidden flipper. Designed by Lee Williams, the Kickstop flipper tab is not attached to the tang of the knife. Because of this, it can independently rotate inward, tucking away and “disappearing” underneath the handle. This gives the knife an overall more streamlined appearance and the beauty of the tanto blade shape really shines through. Notice the compound grind mixed with all of the different angles on the blade, really lovely. There are several color varieties available. Absolutely beautiful grind on that tanto, and the lines are super sleek and flowy with the tab hidden. (American) tantos are my favorite all around style and default I look for when knife perusing. I absolutely *love* karambits too though they are not as utilitarian. Wharnies are up there too on toe-curlers 😂

I prefer the one that shows up, but even bigger, so it can work almost as a guard.
@MelissaBackwoods22 сағат бұрын
Oh, for sure, the flipper tab definitely serves as a guard for piercing and stabbing. This is more of an aesthetic choice and you must admit - that streamlined appearance does make that knife look darn pretty.😅

Aesthetically, absolutely love both versions of the Chop. Had my eye on these all last year. I’ll likely go for the OG version though, for a few reasons. Not saying the hidden flipper isn’t clever (it is), and doesn’t look great when the blade is deployed (it does!). Clean lines have a very specific effect on a knifes overall design. OG fixed tantos had next to no ricasso area guards to speak of, and relied on gentle tapering of the handle along with wrapping or ray skin to provide a functional stop. One could argue that a folding tanto isn’t as well suited to stabbing as a fixed, and is better used for downward slicing and more precision work with the edge transition and tip. But that won’t stop some folks from trying it. Having a flipper tab turned guard is extra insurance against injury in those instances. It’s a choice. Fortunately, these choices exist. I felt similarly about the new CJRB Locust. It pulls from a very specific combat knife known as the Fairbairn-Sykes. The original design was a of course a fixed blade with a handle that tapered outward from the heel to the ricasso (just like a trad tanto), and even included a bit of a flaired handle material as a guard. For “stabby” reasons aka. “combat knife”. The Locust is almost smooth linearly from heel to tip. Looks great, but against its inspiration, less functional. But again, it’s a choice, and folks using them need to keep that in mind if they want all their digits to stay attached. Thanks for the share, sorry for the rant.

@MelissaBackwoods7 сағат бұрын
Rants are always accepted here! I did not know the locust was inspired by the Fairbairn-Sykes. That is… interesting To me. They have very very little resemblance in my opinion 😅 I do really like Locust - probably my top CJRB in recent times. The owner of North Mountain Blade (Shane) really has an appreciation for Asian inspired design. One of the cooler things that the company does is utilize SLD magic metal in their CHOP designs. It’s made with a metallurgy process that wonderfully imitates the hamon on traditional Japanese swords. The shape of this new Chop Kickstop really does it for me.
@JesseCohen2 сағат бұрын
@ It’s the use of SLD Magic (rather rare in the knife space at large), the presence of that hamon, that initially caught my eye as well. And the range of price points available. 2025 came with a couple unexpected expenses, per the usual, but I’m keeping my eye firmly planted on the Chop and its iterations all the same. Japanese blade craft is what drew me to want to casually learn about forging and edged tools in the first place. 40 years later, it’s still fascinating. The CJRB Locust design reference came from the description on their new Kickstarter, featured recently over on Metal Complex. It isn’t live yet, but I read it through. Truthfully, its only real shared element is the dual edge, otherwise the similarities are indeed sparse, as you observed. A quick Google search tells me USPM tactical boot knives come a bit closer, like the CRKT Secret Agent as a modern example. But that’s Ad Copy for you. 😬🗡️
