I used to think so too, but it's gotten a lot better over the years. Bridging the gap between different compilers/systems is hard...

That would certainly make life easier. You can use make on Windows, but only with GCC (via mingw/cygwin). Unfortunately, some Windows features aren't usable from mingw (can't remember which).
