"In 1050 with the Norman conquest of England" Nope, 1066

I'm woefully underprepared for an ecclesiastical debate, but I know there are many interpretations. You may want to visit the link in the description, where you'll find an exchange directly related to your comment. Specifically, a discussion of the directive that speech must be "edifying" -- and what that even means. Further down still you'll find an argument that in Philippians 3:8 "Paul used the equivalent of 'shit'" ("skubala" or σκυβαλα) and that "we sanitize the Bible." Thanks for visiting!

Mathew 12:36-37 "I tell you, on the day of judgement people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your wounds you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned." The bible does read that God cares about what we say. Sir, I do not believe that you have done proper research on this topic for what you have said on your video and request that you rethink a lot of things. Ephesians 4:29 "Let not corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that is may give grace to those who hear." Colossians 3:8 "But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth." Matthew 15:10-11 "And he called to the people and said to them, "Hear and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person."

ok... that refers no to the words you speak, but what you speak.... that doesn't mean if you say "f*ck" you'll go to hell... it means if you say, for example: I don't believe in god" to save your life, then that quote will be the one that condemns you...
@tomdis298611 жыл бұрын
Rodrigo Garcia You are correct that saying bad words will not send you to Hell-actually, if you've been saved, then the only thing that can send you to Hell is Blasphemy (which is actually hard to do). 1 John 1:9 - "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Notice it says ALL unrighteousness-meaning that whatever we said that was unrighteous will be cleansed if we ask forgiveness. Now, that doesn't mean that you can just say whatever you want-doing that can pull you away from God. The more you sin, the more you stray from the path of good. Ethan gave many sufficient examples of this. You can always come back-but it's harder to stay on the narrow path when the devil knows you are so easily tempted.

First of all, he didn't make this story if you actually read the description, but what am I to expect from KZbin, nobody ever reads the description before judging the video. Also; I believe in god, but I don't believe in half of the bible. There's some pretty fucked up bullshit that has absolutely no logical explanation at all. the only reason these words are bad is because people MAKE them bad, they were never bad until people started putting them off as such. If it weren't for people, they would be normal words used by the public and nobody would think twice about it. Not to mention the fact that the bible says that being gay is wrong, even though that it's a fact that people are born gay and it's not a choice, so pretty much, god is blaming others for sinning when he's the one that makes people born a homosexual, they have no say or choice in the matter. My point is, you can't believe everything you read in the bible, considering that some of it is illogical and the fact that it's translated multiple times, which could lead to misunderstandings and/or a bad translation.
@tomdis298610 жыл бұрын
Kasumi No, first of all, God didn't make Adam and Steve (or Madam and Eve, for that matter). God doesn't create people gay-he made the two different genders for a reason. Second, you can't just believe some of the bible-either all or none of it. Mainly, one of the top reasons not to cuss is because it associates you with the wrong crowd-we're supposed to stand out with our beliefs, but when we use that language, we're being just like non-Christians. But, with some people I know it's pointless to argue, so I think we should wind this one down now.

I'd like to point out that one of the reasons this video is interesting is that it is about Christianity (and by extension, religion) but does not condemn nor justify their actions; it merely explains a concept.

To be fair, the Latin based words here are even mild in Latin. Copulate literally means "to bind, to join". Feces are just "waste", to urinate is "to moisten" and penis is actually "tail". All euphemisms. They had "vulgar" counterparts in Latin when it was still commonly spoken. But yeah, the point still stands. The idea is that the commoner language is bad. (Mostly because common people said it how it is, without silly euphemisms.)

I was told stuff along the same lines when I was raised. It's not so much the words that are seen as bad, but the attitude. The apostle Paul said that eating meat is fine, but it is wrong to eat it in front of people who think it's wrong, because that causes strife. I personally just keep it simple and don't swear hardly rarely. But I'm pretty rigid on saying the Lord's name in vain. I believe it shows an extreme lack of respect and that's not something a Christian of all people should be doing.

Awesome, I always argued with my parents about "bad words" growing up. I never did the research...I just always knew there was nothing that actually made them bad for any reason besides people describing them as bad and holding on to a dumb belief. Also fun to blame them for why they are bad, if people didn't keep believing certain words to be bad, there wouldn't even be an issue.

Very well explained but the Normans invaded in 1066 not 1050, they were not really French either, as they identified themselves as Norman.

I'm surprised at how good this is. A couple notes though. The Norman conquest was 1066 not 1050; the year's kind of famous otherwise I might let it go. Also, the field / court distinction of the 11th century is echoed by field / court today, but I feel it's a stretch to say that "shit" vs "defecate" is a direct holdover from 1066. (But "cow" vs "beef" totally stretches back to 1066; 100% on that one.) I would argue that "shit" vs "defecate" is more a matter of Victorian sensibilities, kind of trying to talk around the matter at hand by using a less familiar word.

This is all great, and I hope more christians see it, but it doesn't admonish the fact that there are "curse" words in the bible that people use to bring disaster on one another. The god in the bible validates these words as having more than symbolic power by commanding his chosen people to not tolerate those who use them.
@CaptVelocity12 жыл бұрын
It also warns against pride (you started off rather self-righteous), so remove the plank from your own eye first. And I think you're misinterpreting something, because nobody goes to hell for cursing.

Waitagoddamnmomenthere. If our cuss words come from Germanic Origin, and language has evolved over time, how do we know that the cuss words we speak today are the words specified by "God"? :o
@holycowitsdave7 жыл бұрын
Because "Curse Words" don't exist. When God says "By your words you will be condemned", he means "The blasphemous ideas you have put into words shall condemn you". Basically meaning that if you were to say "Fuck this shit" you'd be fine, but if you were to say "Fuck God" you would not. It's the meaning and ideas the words convey that are important, not the specific words themselves.
