Not I read the things we carried and I absolutely loved it. Not because it was dark, but because it was complex with no real right answers and it gave this sense of raw realism with its different character’s different musings and interpretations of events. The guy thinking about his friend sinking into the septic run off was one thing that had a depth of meaning all to it’s own, while there were things like the solders nice interactions with an old Vietnamese man, or the morality of fighting for something you do not particularly believe in (that last one really stuck to me because it didn’t just preach the cliche ‘only fight for what you believe in’ narrative but it delved into what it meant to do something you didn’t want to do because respecting the law means that you can’t always choose what you want to respect, as well as the role of peer pressure).

Your analysis was well thought out, accurate, but one thing you may have overlooked, regarding the Vietnam DLC, is in the main game, a guy asks you to find 12 lighters that were his buddies as he's the last one of his unit still alive, and wants to ensure these lighters are secure. Most would immediately think, I am not combing a county sized map, spending many many hours looking for some damn lighters. The point of the story is to give you context as to why these lighters are important, and once you gain perspective, the reward is not the cache, but doing something for a veteran who has barely survived hell, lost friends, all while collecting tokens so that those men are never forgotten, at least by their brother Marine, and while he's old and that's old history, that old Marine is still there for some random moments every day, and there for hours every night. Those lighters would represent some closure, and those who live with, and love enough to tolerate a severe PTSD vet, would get those lighters without hesitation, because they know they represent the stuff their vet can't talk about. Now that might pull at your heart strings, but as a severe combat PTSD veteran, I quickly realized that awhile on the surface, that would appear to be what the devs were going for, in fact, their motivation was trying to get players motivated, by putting them in the Marine's shoes, in reality they put a lot of effort into a boring overly long fetch quest, that is forgettable at best.

@@leathery420 Honestly, I think I prefer these shorter form videos. While I love Noah's work, the longer a video goes over an hour or so, the more tired I become with the vid (apart from episodes where it's the breaking down of a series or franchise). For someone with limited time, these shorter form ones are more convenient to watch and easier to digest than jumping back into the much larger ones. I can't imagine the tremendous amount of work that it would've taken to produce the Neverwinter Nights or Far Cry video, so I can appreciate the burn out. I don't mind seeing shorter videos in the future if it leads to more of them as a whole.
@leathery4205 жыл бұрын
@@James-rc8wr I'd have to mostly agree. I mean I really do enjoy the long ass videos, but I do understand if it turns some people off. I can also see how overly long videos may become productivity hurting effort dumps. Plus some topics like Far Cry 5's DLC just don't really warrant an hour long plus video. Noah deciding to release the unfinished videos was really a pleasant surprise. I and I'm sure others noticed he was struggling to meet the deadlines he had imposed on himself. I kind of thought we'd just lose a month or two worth of videos, but he still has something to show for it even if it might not quite be up to his regular standards. It's really quite impressive the amount of professionalism he is putting forth. I think you're interpreting the sunk cost fallacy wrong. In economics, if there's a costless alternative investment or venture that yields a better payoff compared to one you've poured vast resources or time into, you should always jump ship; it doesn't matter that you've sunk all this time or resources into the original venture, go take the more profitable venture. Related to this video: it doesnt matter that you've already sunk hours into Far Cry 5. If theres an alternate activity that would yield more utility/satisfaction, go do it immediately; read a book, drink some Johnny Walker, play anything other than an Ubisoft game.

My buddy and I bought the season pass mainly for the Far Cry 3 remaster, cuz that was also going to be $30. We saw it as “buying Far Cry 3 Classic Edition and getting free DLC for Far Cry 5.” When FC5 turned out to be a bland and boring game, with the experience actually suffering further while playing in co-op, we hoped the DLC would be its saving grace. Hours of Darkness ruined that hope right out the gate. Having to play through the DLC 6 times in co-op, 3 for each person since the stupid trophies were for Host only, was an effective way of pissing us off. Lost On Mars started out great, a welcome breath of comedy and references to things like Tremors that we both loved. But the constant banter was a reason to turn the spoken audio slider down and turn on subtitles. The reveal was guessed at the beginning, and the gameplay was the same 10-minute loop for a 6 hour DLC, that you then had to play AGAIN for you co-op partner. With 2/3 DLCs not worthy of the degrading title of “Shit Show”, we really hoped Dead Living Zombies (or the Zombies DLZ), would be mediocre at best. Honestly though, we were so turned off and tuned out from the entire Far Cry 5 experience, that we just kinda breezed through it on autopilot. I can’t really tell you much about the DLZ, cuz nothing was memorable, and we were so tuned out from everything else FC5-related, that combining the two almost makes me forget entirely that I played the DLZ at all.

Far cry 5 was very disappointing so it's not weird that the DLCs suck too. Ubisoft's lacks the storytelling talent and bravery to tell powerful stories because they don't want to upset anyone. Instead they use marketing to give the impression of great storytelling. Seriously, how many of us didn't think that Far Cry 5's story would be about the south (will rise again), racism and what not and instead got the most inclusive hipster doomsday's cult ever? Just like the main games, the Far Cry 5 DLC has become cynical and boring.

FC5's original reveal was more to stroke the political tensions of modern America to ride off any potential controversy akin to Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus. If you're looking for modern AAA games to be brave with story-telling instead of safe games-as-a-service tier products to appeal to everyone in order to make up for their expensive investments then I have a bridge to sell you. I also think you had too high hopes for Ubisoft as they laid their cards on the table not too long after its reveal that it would be a simple story about a cult. You have Project at Eden's gate which is a not to subtle reference to cults like Heaven's gate and the cover art which is basically The Last Supper, and there's some character interview trailers that basically represent the final product.

He/she suggests you make a good video game the priority over leftie politics injection at any cost, which is ALL that OP has in mind, and couldn't care less about Far Cry, same mindset of "game journalists" that then have his type as the useful idiot parroting their points over FC5 "disappointment". I reckon "focus on the game because its a game" or in French, "fuck off with the leftie crap you nonce", either seem appropriate as a response, not stupid at all.

I disagree but have no time for a return essay. Lol

@ Seems i care more than you and OP put together. "opinions" are all over FC5. Creating games with the sole purpose of smearing certain groups, in this, characters that are just there to spout what you understand to be "the south" or "muh racism" is hardly an opinion and more a pass at depicting "fact", and its FC5 that makes clear who the unhinged in this scenario, are. To corroborate the fact, heres OP with his on-the-fly review of FC5 based on nothing but politics, angry that the game didn't go full tilt leftie in the end, perhaps with some cultists shouting orange man bad for flavor. I don't want politics in a video game, i do not need your twitter-based perceptions of right and wrong either, keep it to yourself, and let people play a video game for what it is, escapism.

For me, the biggest issue with DLCs like this is that what I want in a DLC is continuation of my character (or some kind of extended side quest). I don't want experimental bullshit that the developers figured wouldn't make for a very good full game, so might as well just throw them out as DLC. To me, I don't get why these things needed to even be released as DLC. They should have just been released as mini-games that are tangentially related but don't require Far Cry 5 to play, like they did with Blood Dragon. Far Cry 5, to me, has some of the worst DLC I have ever played. I couldn't stand Mars because, they got rid of towers in Far Cry 5 because they knew they weren't fun, only to add them back in the DLC. Also, I just don't like laser weapons (totally personal taste). I don't know why, I just never have. Even in the Fallout games I just never found laser weapons as enjoyable as normal guns. Hours of Darkness is way too short. That's really all I gotta say about that one. And the last DLC. No comment.

It's hard to get anymore shallow gameplay and story wise then Far Cry games. I enjoyed the first as a fun action game with over the top moments. The second game was a departure from the formula and was refreshingly well made with some interesting new mechanics. The third game refined what 2 was down and simplified it, the story became cliche and shallow as some of the gameplay mechanics from 2 such as malaria and weapon durability was simply removed. Every since 3 the game hasn't changed at all, the exact same gameplay mechanics are used and nothing is added. To put it simply the Far Cry series now is stale old bread with mould growing on it.

I just finished Far Cry 5's main game about a week ago. I played through Hours of Darkness having a pretty good time not great but good enough for me to not regret the money I spent on the DLC. I started Lost on Mars about 2 days ago still not very far into it and yes having a Hurk themed DLC chasing the ghost of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon was an extremely odd choice. What's even more odd is I am actually enjoying it despite Hurk and the general over-the-top campiness of the DLC though that may have more to do with Far Cry 5's general polish as a game more than the DLC itself. So far none of the jokes have been funny just extremely cringe inducing. I am bracing myself for Dead Living Zombies lol. These DLCs are extremely strange in that they are WAY more over the top than Far Cry usually is. I mean most of the games in the series I can at least take seriously and respect that at least within the game world there are real things at stake for the characters and real danger for them too even Blood Dragon. These DLCs though are so over the top and campy none of the situations have any real intensity to them I am never worried for myself or the player character. Even in the middle of a massive firefight I feel as relaxed as when I am taking a nap lol.

Can believe I pre ordered the gold edition... They all looked cool on paper.

They put so many blood dragons in these games I wish they'd just make a full game already. It's like ubisoft is aware that was one of the only times they really nailed the far cry concept.

Hours of darkness is really good if you try play realistic. E.g playing on survival on the hardest difficulty, disabling HUD’s etc. Maybe even health regeneration.

Great analysis. I got fleeting enjoyment out of Lost on Mars, but the other two were fairly lacking. The zombie one was particularly painful. I thought the first couple of "pitches" were amusing, but it's clear they stopped trying. I also found the voice acting in this zombie DLC really distracting. Like, did they even use professional actors, or was it just whoever was around in the office that day?

Does anyone else think Ubisoft hired some of the same artists that also worked on the DLCs for Wolfenstein 2? Sketches like the one on 6:56 look incredibly similar to the art in Wolfenstein 2’s Captain Wilkins DLC, for example. Just cool drawings imo.

The Mars DLC is trying to teach us that a progress bar can't measure suffering, because suffering is eternal. It's worth mentioning that Russo really didn't have much influence on Return of the Living Dead's final product

i bought the gold edition of the game, not played any of the dlc's. As soon as the first dlc came out i thought it looked like it was made inside the editor and they all basically seem like it, disappointing considering i was one of the few who liked farcry 5 and the ending but the only thing i can see worth from the gold edition was you got farcry 3 free with it, which i haven't played yet.

Great video sir, and well thought out. I'm sure everybody's said it, but, because it became nightmare fuel for me as a kid, I'm going to (shudder) quote the line as I remember it: "Send... more... (long pause) para-med-ics". I've just conquered a fear on my list typing that! Have a good day sir, and again, excellent video.

When the zombie DLC was coming out I thought we were gonna get something similar to state of decay an open world zombie campaign set in the beautiful Montana wilderness. I was so wrong, and so sad.

The Vietnam one I love and how it's a free form single objective and not a generic mission mishmash. I spent 9 hours role-playing through my first coop playthrough. The zombie one I do like the setup for but it's lacking for content and I at least can stand guy marvel more than hurk (who I used to kind of like before the dlc). The Mars one I hated all the way through and it made me hate hurk so goddamn much. So far Vietnam is the only one I've ever went back to.

It's rare to see an essay on this channel that looks at a subject and comes up with "well, I tried, but this is really just disposable," but congrats, Ubisoft, you've made a slate of DLC so fundamentally vapid it has reached that high bar. I really do feel for the writers who had to write six hours of banter and the designers, modelers, animators, etc. working in the video game industry's shite conditions to produce AAA-polished versions of Giant Alien Crabs and Yet More Zombies. I look forward to the inevitable New Dawn video, the marketing attention that expansion has received makes me at least hope there's some more creative ambition behind it.
