Good comparison. I just split a bunch of about 36” Beech rounds on the Axis yesterday. I did have them cut in 1/2 with a chainsaw so I had a chance of moving them with just one person. Sliding verses catching seems way safer.

Hi Heath, good video of the differences between the vertical splitters and the Horizontal splitters. One thing I would add is that if you have the extended tray for the Eastonmade for the large rounds it makes it somewhat easier as most of the time the pieces from the first split fall onto the extended tray, but not always. I also could keep those pieces there until I was ready for them. I didn’t even know about the extended tray as an option until I went to Woodsman days. BTW, the hat arrived today and you can I’ll see it on upcoming videos. Thanks again

Thanks Heath! You commented to me recently that you planned to do this video. The video confirmed what I was thinking and plan to buy. I will only criticize one thing in your video and that is that you walked around the horizontal splitter w/o mentioning that a pile of wood or a conveyor may be in the way when going around it in that direction. So, it would be interesting to see if you timed yourself doing a face cord using both machines. Please do bundle size or smaller wood.

Great comparison video Heath and the 12-22 needed to move for the kitchen!! I've been dreaming about the WR 17VS, but will most likely stick with my WR pro 28c. Thanks for the breakdown! Really informative!! I wish somebody would make a vertical splitter in the $5-7k range. I burn wood in my own house and sell 4-5 cords per year out of a roadside stand. I cannot justify $13,000 for a log splitter. One thing I can’t believe is not many people have built tables like your all wood round table. I seen yours table right when you got it. I built mine the next day. I wouldn’t be without it. I set it at 36inch table height. About the same height of an Axis. My round table is really an all wood table. Hold right around 1/3 Cord. Shots fired! Seriously though, I think the Horizontals are a slightly safer option - not that the verticals aren't safe (right Allen Family Firewood), but I just don't trust myself to have my hands as close to the blade as they require. I prefer to just sent it and stand back. One other thing to note - some of the smaller frame splitters allow you to work from the side loading the log lift. This makes it a great option for splitting alone.

The Axis is the best in my opinion to replace the box store.. with the Axis you can quadruple your production and make the bank to purchase a small Processor... then off to the big leagues.. the Axis is the most versatile machine from boiler, to stove, to high value smoker and recreational burning, to kindling.. no other can do so much...

What awesome timing! I've been on phone with Gerry at Eastonmade, and with Wolfridge both today, just before you posted this awesome video. I have the Eastonmade 22/28 with Dual Log Lifts, 36" extended tray, 5 way Boxwedge, and tall 4 way. This is to much of a splitter for one person. "Merry Go Round" as you mentioned is 100% truth. You need 2 or more people, as the Eastonmade is a BEAST, an Awesome machine. My 22/28 is now for sale as of yesterday, as I'm going with Vertical- from either Wolfridge or Eastonmade. My Horizontal makes to much waste for me to let split wood flow directly into IBC totes. A vertical will mostly eliminate this. So again, GREAT video, great timing, as my 22/28 is gonna be leaving soon as well, for a new unit. I love your very informative videos! kzbin.info/www/bejne/i56rY3yjd8dje7s

I’ve been a huge fan of Easton made, but I have to tell you that Wolfridge’s new VS 17. I honestly believe is a better machine with the improvements that they have made the ignition is electric start which is located at the front. The throttle control is located at the front. The log lift goes up completely vertical, and if you decide to get it with the conveyor, it is hydraulically operated as well as the log lift. No need for belts or hand cranking.

Thanks Jerry, the splitter you have is a beast and definitely can keep a few people busy! Working alone though I think you’ll be really happy with a vertical machine. I’m sure you’ll sell the 22/28 in no time, they don’t hit the used market too often.

Both is definitely the best option if you can swing it! My method is to surprise her with the new splitters! You start by getting pseudo permission, say I’m going to look at this splitter. If she says okay that’s basically permission because why look at it if you aren’t going to buy it if it checks out. Then hit her with the surprise new splitter when it arrives. “No guarantees on the effectiveness of this plan lol”
