Hey Brady. You have to pick your unit in colorado. What if your unit there burns? There is still 14000 deer tags for non residents. Now they are spread out vs all hitting popular areas. I think this was a good move personally
@GOHUNT4 жыл бұрын
Hey Kurt. This is Brady Miller responding back to you. I understand 100% what you’re saying. What I should have mentioned in the video in regards to the example about draw states doing this was at least CO offers a decent chance to get the tag (big difference in a preference point state, vs. Idaho here on the capped otc units I understand that) but at least people do get a chance in some type of tag drawing. The whole waiting in line for a tag and finding out you actually have zero chance to get a tag because the system kept crashing and didn’t put you in the randomized pool or the checkout crashed when you had a tag in your cart and then you got sent back to the waiting pool is what I constantly have gotten messages about from people since this otc sale date. Also, a lot of people don't have the option to sit around at a computer all morning waiting to get a tag when they have a job that doesn't allow them to do that. So yes the burn example wasn’t the best (I was running on low amounts of coffee that day haha). Also from a standpoint where people might have tried to get a tag in a unit they are familiar with or even try to get a tag with their friend to hunt together. This new system made it very, very tough for someone to do that because you can't jump in the line with a buddy and apply together. So the way this sale was conducted could have been a little smoother and possibly different in my opinion.

Washington, Idaho, and California were everywhere in the woods in one of the open over the counter units. The deer and elk are over pressured by hunters and predators. It is a little disheartening when you see elk camp after elk camp chuck full of out of state plates in your unit. The elk get real quite real fast. I have also seen out of staters do some of the most horrific stunts while hunting here like leave piles of garbage behind, drive on roads that are closed for hunting season and clearly posted and even drive their side by sides where there is no trail just plowing through like no one else wants to enjoy the place. A few years back I was driving into my unit when I could see smoke and trucks hightailing it out of the unit and planes dropping retardant. I stopped a guy who was on his way out and he told me some guys from Minnesota had to have a campfire and there was a burn ban in place. 40 mile an hour winds kicked up and there went my unit. Deer and elk open on different days. If you are going to limit numbers, make it limited entry. Don't change your tag allocation and your prices in the same year. As a north idaho resident hunter i think this move should have been made years ago. Non resident tags is not even an issue if it was not for the huge influx of people we have moving to Idaho and becoming residents and taking up this way of life... Idaho limited non residents to 15 percent of the overall hunters in each unit. I think that is plenty generous!! It gives out of state hunters a chance to buy them first come first serve (can't do that in very many western states) and it spreads hunters out throughout idaho. I don't see a video complaining about how we only have a 50 percent chance at even drawing a general tag in montana. I would much rather be able to buy my license first come first serve then my name go in a hat and cross my fingers! Back in 2014 I had the best mule deer tag in the state of Montana and never got a call from them to see if I took a mule deer. I would have loved to have a mandatory harvest report with the coveted tag I pulled so the state can gather all the data they can to help their deer herds. I was a resident in Montana for over a decade and I personally sent information in that I would support a fee increase for residents (while I was a resident) if it meant more money could be allocated for wildlife and helping out the animals I care so much about or other ways I could help.

Idaho has always been the fall back state for everyone else who wants to hunt the west. While I disagree with the fact they cut the disabled vet tags to 300, I have no issue with anything else they did. Every other state with the exception of Colorado make it extremely difficult for a nonresident to hunt year after year. Idaho isn't taking away that option for nonresidents, they're just trying to alleviate some of the pressure brought on by resident and nonresidents in certain units. Yeah the system that they used sucks, but if you were familiar with years past, the same shit happens every year, just not to the extent it did this year. What are the nonresidents going to say when Idaho goes full limited entry like every other state? I think the nonresidents need to just be happy that they're still able to hunt Idaho even if it's not in their favorite unit.

As a lifelong Idaho resident hunter, I agree that the tag buying system was a mess for non residents this year... however I do also agree with others that something needs to change to stop overcrowding in certain areas of the state. As far as blaming non residents for the road hunting, I’ve observed just as many if not more residents road hunting in the areas that I hunt. It is a problem that IDFG needs to get a handle on before more people start having altercations or taking matters in to their own hands. Being able to buy OTC tags, resident or non resident has been a great thing for our state for years, however we as residents have seen increasing restrictions year after year, fueled by increasing population and increasing non resident hunting alike. So as a resident, would I rather see more restrictions on my opportunities or more restrictions on non residents? I think that answer is obvious, but I don’t like that there was little to no time for non residents to make their decisions and then have to deal with a purchasing system that was a mess.... just my 2 cents

I am a non-resident hunter and always wondered why resident and non-resident hunters purchased tags at the same time. Why not have residents purchase OTC on December 1, and then open up non-resident OTC two weeks after resident OTC? This gives residents the opportunity to pull tags before non-residents. This could alleviate the mad rush for tags, system crashes, and negativity toward non-resident hunters. Just an idea/opinion from a NR guy who loves the outdoors and bow hunting.

Lastly, be thankful IDFG allows non residents to buy their tags before us residents, if residents could buy a non res tag as a second tag on December first, you guys would be screwed, we'd buy them all.

Haha! We are definitely thankful for that, Brad. Thanks for responding. This is Brady hitting you back. I've been chatting with more and more people since Dec. 1, and the big consensus that most nonresidents were frustrated with is the waiting in a "virtual line" only to have it crash at some point, or crash when they had a tag in their cart. And most are all in favor if they made these a min-draw for nonresidents, and then after the fact they could possibly use this first come first serve wait in line dealio.

Shawn Kelley, you are exactly correct. I'm almost 60, living in North Idaho all of my life. In the last 20-30 years North Idaho has experienced massive population growth, intense logging resulting in endless ATV roads, large quantities of available hunting technology, and a Fish and Game Commission that is all about managing wildlife for money as evidenced by multiple tags for hunters. The end result has been a sad and steep decline in the trophy and upper age class of deer and elk, not to mention a hunter attitude that animals are there only for killing purposes.

Im in idaho and its completely overrun with mostly Washington and coastal folks. Its about time the state did a reduction and i dont think they did enough. What you non res folks do know is how far our game numbers have fallen. I live here and remember seeing large amounts of game on the way to school. Now decades later you run across notthing compared to large numbers of yesteryear. Beside that the rural counties in Idaho have been really hit hard with out of state campers and hunters in campgrpunds and dispersed campsites. Its costing counties a lot in services and garbage cost even when garbage makes it to a dumpster because the locals are paying the tab. Emergency services and garbage services are actually putting a strain on rural counties. I know the sherriff and commissiners and accessor and we cant afford to maintain our access roads and garbage for non res people coming in and using our land and not paying for those services. Sorry, but game license and tag fees arent paying for the land your using and the access roads the counties keep open and accosiated costs. So its just not game numbers and opportunities that are at play its costs by counties not getting any benefit from land uses like hunting. We're struggling a lot with this in our county but everyone whos a non res thinks they have a "right" because its public land. Well those access areas and emergency systems and garbage haulauge collection are all paid for by the residents and thats what we really have our panties up in a bunch over.
@chrisgreen3594 жыл бұрын
50% of game and fish funding for Idaho comes from non-residents as of 2018. Since Idaho increased their non-resident price increase will maintain that funding or increase it slightly. So if things are bad and non-residents are funding so much and residents want non-residents gone so bad, why not propose limiting non-resident tags and taking an increase in tag prices? Maintaining the funding and getting rid of the evil non-residents. Because what Idaho did will do nothing to help you situation. Now if you tell me, it's related to the science and there are too many hunters in areas (residents and non-residents combined) and it needs to be limited entry situation. I'd be inclined to agree with you. That's not the story. The story is that non-residents are ruining the hunt and while we are at it they should be funding more of the state budget. Which may or may not ever be seen at the local level... You might still see the same amount of public usage and a group of non-residents that care less about the part of the country that you live.
@sheerwillsurvival20644 жыл бұрын
You seem to forget 69% of Idaho is federal land that we all pay taxes for but don’t worry you got your way and it will get to be a pay to play for non resident so only the wealthy and residents will get to hunt there problems solved for you well except trash campers maybe you can work on that next time
@aaronwilcox64174 жыл бұрын
I understand the funding fornthe fish and game and i also understand that much of the state is public land. What the comments and non res arent getting is that those access roads, dumpsters, and emergency services and other services needed to get you that access is paid for by the residents of those rural counties. The rural roads and services your using and sometimes camping on and the trash you dump is paid for by big counties with small polulations. Our commissioners in the Idaho county are dealing with a crowd of non res folks coming in and using "public land" and resources including emergency calls, more law enforcement, solid waste, and parking on public roadways and its gotten crowded and out of hand. Believe me. Im always talking to our sherriff and commissioners and hearing about these issues. Dont get me wrong. Many non res people are pretty respectful and are an actual plus to the economy but a good chunk of them arent and because of this the county has actually lockedndown some county roads and had to make new ordinances and restrictikns from the behavior ofnthese folks coming in and not taking care of public lands and roads. The absolute worst are the Washington folks with their SxS vehicles. Even on our private drive road they come up to our hour located by our old mining operation and up my private wooded road tearing the hell out of stuff thinking "hey, its public land". 9/10 ofnthe time i have Washington folks on the property wanting to go explore old mines they see. Its become a real problem in this county which is 85% public land. Ive floated the idea that evrybody pay a backcountry solid waste fee to cover parking and garbage costs the counties have to foot the bill over. Ive talked to local elected officials about this and we are looking to find ways to have everyone pay for the access and associated costs instead of just the county taxpayers who on average use these resources very little compared to the hoardes comjng in. Im just saying that the cuts in tags and raises in prices have issues behind them your not seeing. Its not just about funding fish and game but its also the cost of public land use that are behjnd the scenes and what you may not consider. Now if non res hunters and campers could pitch in a fee and help pay for more maintence of highly used access roads and services and solid waste issues it would go a long way in paying for public access and not pissing the local populace off. Just because its public land doesnt mean its free to do what you want or that you have every right to access it on roads paid for by others. Keel that in mind.
@sheerwillsurvival20644 жыл бұрын
@@aaronwilcox6417 that’s a lot but as for road fees the little time we drive on your roads is payed for by the gasoline tax we pay when we buy gas in your state a portion going to state roads when we stay at hotels in your state coming in and out of hunting units we they pay taxes thus we pay taxes by staying in those hotels. As for dumpsters I would be glad they are using dumpsters and not leaving it in the woods .as for me I drop my trash at the first gas station I stop at and buy gas food snacks ect , or I stop at rangers station which we all pay for as for a camping fee the federal taxes pay for that that’s why the forest service doesn’t charge us
@aaronwilcox64174 жыл бұрын
Folks im not against all hunting being closed to non res but realize i first hand have witnessed the demise of our game populations while the state continues to sell permits in overcrowded and areas far behind objectives and carrying capacity. Most here dont understand how these public roads get budgeted. Just because its a foresest service campgeound or road doesnt mean dick. The FS or dept of interior mandates the county pick up the waste fee from the federal camp ground and maintain the access roads with the little federal funding we areballoted. A good portion is payed by local residents taxes thrubproperty taxes. Our sherriff, commissioner and accessor is pissed about how the locals are getting the tab for non res coming in and no revenue is staying within the county. And no, they rarely buy gas, or other supplies here because our towns are small and they do purchasing in adjenctent larger communities out of state or county. Our county officals dont mind non res folks but its put a big strain on our local budgets.. Youd have to dig into it to really understand.

They haven't ever shut down a whole unit because of a burn. They are huge units and plenty of space even if half of a unit was shut down. It was averaged the number of residents over 5 years and then 10% of that was quoted to nr hunters.

Brody if you knew anything about Idaho. You would know that residents were limited years ago where we could hunt. Whitetail vs regular tags for deer, then limited even further when the state broke out the elk zone structure. Yes there is a non resident quota but your not limited to specific units. i.e. every non resident could choose to hunt one unit. Would that happen, No. This new plan spreads everyone out. Furthermore in Idaho when hunting pressures exceed certain thresholds within a unit, the state implements a controlled hunts only. limiting quota and hunter numbers for both residents and non residents. Idaho is one of the most open over-the-counter states left out west and very welcoming to non-residents. Unfortunately It seems like your really disappointed about something else. You even got what you wanted. I guess some people are never satisfied. Good luck on your hunt.

I disagree with you regarding Idaho going too far. I support the tag quotas. There were already general tag quotas for residents and non-residents in many units like Middle Salmon, Selway, Sawtooth, Elk City, etc. I think the new quotas will do a decent job of making sure that hunting pressure isn't focused solely or disproportionately on one zone. I haven't crunched the numbers but I'd be curious how many tags(of the 13k total tags) are actually effected with the new change after you take out non- resident controlled hunt tags and zones that already had non-resident quotas. At least it's not a drawing like every other western state so if you absolutely wanted to hunt, you WILL get a tag in contrast to other states where you just have to hope you're drawn. And kudos to Idaho for staying away from preference points. I'll agree with you on the technical difficulties really sucking. It sucks that a website crashing could cause you to lose a tag opportunity. I'm not immune from chastising Idaho Fish and Game for a lot of decisions; however, in this instance, they don't have the ability to implement a beta version for tags to be purchased through and likely can't prepare for the volume of server traffic it will require. I don't think you guys are any stranger to new tech and programming that has a few bugs here or there but you can take solace in the likelihood that it will be smoother next year. After all, it worked for Trail so maybe he'll let you tag along on his hunt if it keeps booting you. I should have called out in the video that I'm always talking about mule deer :) Also, I don't mind tag quotas to a degree, just kinda wish they were more on a zone basis rather than a unit by unit. But I'm sure there was a great reason for Idaho to do so, and I haven't had time to really dive into that reasoning they didn't set it up like elk zones. But I still respect their decision and I'm still looking forward to seeing how this coming 2021 season plays out with these new changes. And also I'm glad you caught all the Instagram stories we put up with Trail's process. You should have seen the conversations I was having with him and how he was able to slip in sort of seamlessly when I ran into all sorts of problems. They just need to go to a draw like All the other states. There is getting more hunters than areas and herds can handle. Every state that is a draw has had to deal with this same issue. Once it went to a draw now you have quality hunts and animals, people can hunt with their friends/family vs this.

Very well put! This is Brady responding back to you. A mini draw would have solved a lot of the frustration and given more people a "chance"

Idaho resident here, hunting pressure for me wasn't seen this year. The people complaining are the people who drive around hunting roads.

Don’t know where you live in ID, but the Non Resident archery elk hunter #’s around Salmon were ridiculous this past season. I was shocked! It was so discouraging I lost interest in hunting elk as one could not go into the field without running into multiple NR hunters, and I don’t road hunt! I am very supportive of the IFG commission decision to reduce NR hunters in this state. I’d guess as an Idaho resident I’m not alone!

I think it depends where you hunt. Northern Idaho is just east Spokane and it is a joke up here. And I don’t road hunt.

@Sheerwillsurvival BTW my son is a disabled veteran too, recipient of the Silver Star, received as a result of engaging insurgents in Iraq, two tours there and two in Afghanistan. Making judgmental comments about peeps you don’t know may not be respectful... Just sayin’😊

pick any state in the union and this is the whine of the residents about non residents. But the point that is being missed by limititng hunters in a state, is that it limits revenue coming into the fish and game depts and business. So when Anti hunters, animal rights groups attack there is limited revenue and hunters to take up the fight. If its for game management, fine. If its because of whinny babies who think public land is all theirs and not to share, they are cutting of their nose to spite their face.
