More people are hungry than ever before, and the UN warns the numbers are increasing
The UN's latest report on global hunger shows we are moving backwards.
At least 828 million people went hungry one way or another, on a daily basis, last year.
War, natural disasters and rising temperatures are threatening food security.
The prices of wheat and other crops have increased exponentially - and will continue to do so.
Billions of dollars are needed to prevent a global food crisis.
What can we do before it's too late?
Presenter: Sohail Rahman
Guests:
Nils Mollema, policy adviser on climate justice for ActionAid Netherlands
Maurice Onyango, regional head of Disaster Risk Management at Plan International
Abdolreza Abbassian, food market analyst and former senior economist at the FAOhting for and that is why I am resigning,” he said on Twitter.

In Africa, the problem is most people do not know how to rotate crops and protect the soil. Overgrazing is a massive problem. Equals soil erosion...

45 million children are wasting away? In the USA, we have actual caves full of 1.4 billion pounds of excess cheese. We’re dumping milk into fields because we have so much extra. Please, let’s get some of these dairy products sent to feed these children immediately. Young children can digest lactose, so lactose intolerance won’t be a problem. If these children stay malnourished, they can develop long term health problems and mental deficits even if they survive. Every moment lost in getting food to these children is reducing humanity’s future potential and increasing our future disease burden.

Sending even a quarter pound of cheese per child could help get these children the micronutrients they need for proper brain and body development if they could get enough other calories to survive from cheap carbohydrates.

As a farmer I can tell you we are not paid well. According to the commodities system it really does not matter if we actually receive a profit. Imagine bankrupting the people whom everybodies survival depends. Consider that logic. Middle men become wealthy taking huge profits with no concern that the producer can actually continue working. It would seem rational that all societies would most want to be concerned about the viability of it's farmers, rather then saying 'o well that's capitalism ' In which case you all starve and farmers can say ' o well that's capitalism'

The production of food has been given over to the rich and families who are interested in producing their own food can no longer afford the price of land. One thing that wasn't mentioned is deforestation. There would be less drought, regardless of climate change, if large tracts of land were not cleared of trees. Now, the topsoil is blown away and dried, making moist, rich productive soil a thing of the past. This is most apparent in Africa, and there isn't even shade for protection against the summer heat. There are few people in government who can empathize nor understand ordinary people. 😭

There's a reason for that. If you're poor you need lots of children to work the fields. Lots of them die young or of other diseases and starvation. So they have to have many children. All they do is sit around whining with their hand stretched out, pretending that it is someone elses fault they are pregnant and do'nt have food for their kids. Food waste and hoarding are still prevalent in many countries and known to the international communities, who are only busy calling expensive summits one after another or publishing reports without actually taking the action on the ground. Western countries are so generous that we send them tons of food and money so they can have more kids. As a result, they now have the strength and the numbers to hike, swim, and build boats to become refugees in western countries so we can continue to give them tons of money and food in the form of welfare and now also housing. But that’s not all, many will commit crimes in their new homes so now we have to put them in prisons where we have to once again pay tons of money to house and feed them while they are incarcerated . If we really think about it, all of western countries problems with crime, poverty, inflation, and global warming due to over population are all self inflicted. We created all of our problems but are too stupid to realize it.

Should the world not ban beef production for a year or two? I've heard it takes 7 lbs of grain to produce 1 lb of beef. Subsidize cattle farmers & free up huge amounts of grain to feed our brothers & sisters. I love a good steak but I love my brother more. Let's work together. Ban beef production and eat 20% less each wk. We can help! We can do "some" things. P*E*A*C*E

The rate is more like 18 to 1, however, abstaining from meat will not solve the hunger problem. Not that you shouldn't try. I'm a vegetarian myself, but there is enough food available - the problem is still distribution. The problem is the lack of knowledge or resources of farmers in the global south to farm efficiently or deal with disasters. The problem is that 80% of the global food market is in the hands of a handful of conglomerates. The problem is that even in the West some farmers earn so little that they live on the edge of the subsistence level, the problem is that in parts of Africa and Asia it is better for fishermen to sell their catch as fishmeal to rich countries than to the local population. Etc… It's the market and by extension the system as a whole that is the problem. As long as profits are the main motive for political action and it is more profitable to let people starve, people will starve.

Many African countries have become dependent on other countries for survival. They have lost the desire to be self-sufficient. Agriculture can be adjusted to each environment. Rain catching systems should be abundant in all of east and NE Africa. Green houses in some areas would be beneficial as well. Smaller family units would lead to more education and advancement over time.

Exactly. I saw video of some African village. They need water but won't dig a well. The children would walk 4 miles to get water. Foreigners came to dig a well for them. Reason why they didn't? Because there were always westerners came to do things for them. So just sit and wait and moaning.... Sure, Western countries done a lot of harm to African countries but you need to help yourselves before others can help you!

Dear GJP. I've read around 10 of your comments spread over from 2 months ago: You seem to limit yourself to projections from UN and downstream institutions. As in this video, reality is, politics plays the major part. Recently, during SCO meeting it was revealed that 300 thousand tons of Russian fertilizers have accumulated in the sea ports of European Union and Russia is willing to transfer them to developing countries (Africa and others) free of charge. Sanctions have been lifted off Russian wheat, but only for EU nations. Africa cannot have them.

To illustrate global food crisis, you haven't find anything else than the faces of Africans and their children. Are there not people who are hungry elsewhere in the world? Is Qatar free from hunger? Probably yes. And the reason is probably the blessings of God, I mean natural resources. The thing is God in his mercy has also blessed many countries in Africa with similar natural resources. But unfortunately in Africa despite the resources millions and millions must symbolize hunger, food crisis, poverty, etc due the effects of organised criminals, modern slavers, predators and dictators. For centuries our faces must be used to explain the worst: poverty, misery, hunger, etc. Organised criminals, modern slavers, etc who are the principle of such misery no one say anything about. Thus if there no hungry kids in Qatar you can use to illustrate your 'Inside Story', please leave our children alone and have the decency not to use their image to illustrate your emission.

It looks like the common problem they have in Africa is water shortage, and they have been having this problem for a long time. The African people need to build some desalination water plants to make fresh water widely available for humans, animals, and agriculture. Sientists and policy makers are important. However, what is really needed is more on-the-ground ACTION by qualified, energetic, get-your-hands-dirty, people teaching locals basic techniques like rainwater harvesting and intensive organic gardening/farming. These techniques ARE being used in Africa, India, and other "developing countries" and can be done by individuals. Cooperate wth governmens but, don´t depend upon them. Look up videos about rainwater harvesting, Brad Lancaster, Zephaniah Phi Maseko; John Jeavons, Grow Biointensive, The Man Who Stopped the Desert. p.s. These videos give examples of people who have done PRACTICAL water harvesting and intensive gardening apt for drylands. I teach these techniques in Mexico.

Too much dysfunction, corruption & suffering exists in the world, but some people also have too many children or actively choose problematic policies. We need a better process of global cooperation to alleviate suffering, that is better tied to hard nosed prudent reforms.

And to be frank the Ukraine Narrative as a cause of hunger in Africa is BS, Africa imports only 12% of the Ukrainian grain amounting to 6.26 million metric tones , may be if you say due to raising cost of fuel as a result of the war , has caused raising food prices due to increase in transportation costs and therefore has reduced accessibility of food to some people , that may be correct in some way.
