I just found your channel a week ago and subscribed today as I'm gearing up to market my online counseling private practice through youtube. The first thing I found was a lot of lighting advice (which was super helpful). But the shift to newer content I find valuable, too, because 1) you're discussing aspects of setting up a channel that are far less talked about, 2) these topics are particularly important to sustain a channel that I hadn't thought of, and 3) they have an authenticity that comes from lived experience that increases my trust level in what you're saying. Thanks for this. I'm looking forward to where this channel goes next.

Man, I fucking feel you. Self employed: professionally unemployed. You don't have a job, but everything is work. The thing you said about hitting burnout every year, and having an awareness of hitting it earlier... I felt that a lot. I only sporadically watch your videos but I remember the ones I saw helping me a lot figure out my studio space, lighting, framing, etc. And I've been so happy with this space, and doing live streams and stuff. I really appreciate all the stuff you put out there. Wish I could give more but honestly... it's been rough. The economy is going to the shitter and being self employed at the moment is _rough_. Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear about your life struggles. I was one of the ones that came for the lighting videos, especially the ones done in a way that other channels didn't seem to be doing. I also liked your personal style at the time (and still prefer that). On the other hand, I've also had my own filmmaking struggles (and acquired a couple new hobbies), so that end has shifted for me as well. So, I'll still be around (probably), just a lot more randomly, and hopefully you'll be able to do another one of those short short film things. Hope you had a great Christmas and have a Happy New Year!

Being in a transition phase, figuring out what one likes and discarding old interests, shifting focus, gaining new insights into oneself … usually a rough patch and then things improve again, and you come out stronger on the other side :) Been there several times, usually works out in the end :) Some people won’t follow along and new ones join in on the fun :) But what *really* doesn’t fly is some of the comments you’ve gotten the last weeks and months that you have shared - the shallowness of some people is just mindboggling, hopefully you find some comfort in all the numbers (aka people) that *don’t* leave and don’t act like an ass :) Most of us appreciate what you do and will stay around for a long time, come hell or high water or the occasional haircut :)

The way you started was fantastic and a huge help. The directions you are exploring, and the way you present the topics is just as good. Your approach is honest, unbiased, and easy to follow. You tackle subjects, like sponsors, in a way that I haven't seen before. It was a great presentation and very informative in what goes on behind the scenes (no pun intended). I appreciate your channel, your content, and what you are giving us. Thank you for that. The burn out is real. I've gone through it myself, though not for the same reasons, but I empathize with what you're going through. All I hope is that you continue to expand and explore the way you are, keep being you, and I hope that you keep rocking it. You might lose some of the subscribers, but continuing the route you're going, I have no doubt you'll get more in the future. Remember, you started at 1 subscriber way back when, and made it to where you are now. Nothing says you can't do it again. didn't loose my sub buddy 👌 you've done a fantastic job covering lighting and light-adjacent things, diversifying a bit makes sense to me - and gotta be fun & refreshing for you to change it up! Interesting to hear the affiliate income plummet, but wouldn't take it personally. Prob due to *lot of uncertainty with the economy last several months, likely creators are hanging on to their dollars at the moment and putting larger purchases on the back burner. personally, I bought a big lens last month and won't be doing any more acquisitions until Black Friday deals, lot of media folks prob in the same boat. Also, late summer work for me typically slows down for a minute. It's always a welcome break to catch up on life stuff, hard drives & backend, all the FW updates i didn't have time for lol, etc etc. Perhaps this is a good break for you to check some of those things off the list, and make the channel as great & sustainable as possible. We all get a lot of objective value from your reviews, keep up the good work and keep your head up!

I am finishing up a doc that was a bear to make and there is no money out there for documentaries these days. I get where you are coming from. Let the haters hate. You are amazing and you can only do what you can do. Family always comes first as does your own mental health. I still look forward to your next video as much as I did years ago. Hey....remember when you only had 10,000 subs? I can't imagine anyone watching your videos is only doing one thing.....without all the ancilary things that go along with it. Beyond equipment reviews, the other stuff, studio set-ups, customer interaction, how to get business, etc., is stuff I know I NEED TO LEARN ABOUT. As it is, I do literally everything from writing the script to editing finished narrative films, and everything in between. The business aspect of this field is what I am weakest in, but I realize it is a significant part of all this. So yeah, any aspect of filmmaking is what I am game for. We all go through good times and bad times. They worst thing a person can do is not admit to themselves where they are at in that cycle. You have to take care of yourself first. You have to make sure the foundation is sound, then you can build on that. ;) Fortunately, it sounds like you are doing just that. You are ahead of the game already.

Financial issues, the ups and downs of losing views and subscribers etc. It’s really sad to hear you’ve lost people by being truly authentically yourself. Don’t feel bad asking for help, yes many are struggling right now but also many people have a couple bucks to spare we’d otherwise go spend on something else anyway. What’s your venmo? Let them go. You're doing a great job and I love the content you are putting out now. Your newer content is extremely helpful to a lot of viewers who may want to get in to the KZbin or film game. The people who are unsubscribing aren't your true supporters. You will gain new subscribers as more interested parties find your channel. Ever KZbin who makes a change to their channel goes through some subscriber loss. I wouldn't worry about it. I too have been trying a lot of different things. How many times can you show someone how a light turns on and off. Seriously people. So, I wouldn't stress about it. Your mental and physical health is more important than an algorithm. Keep putting the good out into the world as you always do. ;)

I have about 30,000 subscribers/followers across my different channels and social media. I have gone through some terrible health problems over the last 2 years and I thought about how if every one of my followers gave me a dollar or 2, how much that would help me get medical help. I finally caved and made a gofundme post and got zero donations to it after posting it and talking about it to my fans. It was a discouraging and eye opening moment for me realizing that I don’t matter that much to my audience and I’ll be honest, I haven’t made much content since then. I don’t know how to move forward. I have a similar background to you and I feel similar about KZbin and my career in the film industry slipping away. I came bcs rl well made,(good for eye), informative, to the point-not too long movies about lights, right. I bought ml60. thanks! And I stayed bcs didn’t much changed ;) More I can say I even more appreciate topics like sponsors and contracts. It’s not much been said as they are not popular. I’m just geek but even I do t have company, really like content. Cheers

Be yourself - you can be proud of what you've built. Being an entrepreneur is very hard. You'll find lots of ups and downs, especially financially. Anyone who tells you otherwise is telling tall tales. But, one thing is true: it's much better to work for yourself!

Yep, entrepreneur is very challenging Sometimes it feels rewarding, sometimes it's agony

Very subjective here and there are probably reasons to do otherwise, but have you considered a lower patreon tier? My patreon bill is about 24 pounds per month and that covers 11 people. You can do the maths and see I'm paying 1 or 2 pounds to most of them. When I checked your patreon the lowest tier was 4.5 pounds. I swear if you made a 2 pound/dollar tier, I'll be there.

I hadn't thought about that, thanks for making me aware! I went ahead and made a lower tier, thanks! patreon.com/fellowfilmmaker

I don't understand why people would unsubscribe to you because you might have a different lifestyle. This is a Sad world.

It's hard out there to be an openly gay creator. Things have gotten harder in the past few years.
