I first purchased my R7 as a successor to my Canon 90D and I have been nothing but happy with it. I knew in advance about the rolling shutter, so I have intentionally used the first-curtain shutter and have been nothing but pleased with it. I loved my 90D, and I feel even more so for the R7. I have since purchased the R5, which with my new RF 200-800 mm is now my main rig for bird and wildlife photography. I now use the R7 for both macrophotography and scenic work. The R7 is an exceptional camera with the exception of the rolling shutter issue, which also is an issue with the R5. But knowing that shortcoming in advance allowed me to decide how I would compensate for it. I am pleased with the results. My only complaint with Canon now is the buffer bottleneck that can interrupt the flow of action photography.

Appreciate your comments and corrections and expansions on the R7. I owned one for about 18 months, primarily for bird photography. My experience was that something, probably shutter shock, sometimes introduces softness fairly often in those images. But other times i’d get incredibly sharp images. It was very frustrating to try to control for that when i couldn’t narrow down exactly what was causing it. That i believe, is the larger dilemma for owners…both shutter modes have serious issues. Thanks.

You made a clarifying statement no need to apologize. If people are upset about it. It’s OK they’ll get over it. I sincerely hope Canon comes out with a pro grade crop sensor. The R7 is a decent crop sensor camera. However, Let’s not forget the R7 has focusing issues. Also, in mechanical shutter it suffers from shutter shock more so than normal and there’s no native grip. No if you keep it in electronic first curtain, single point auto focus or 9 point or less focus, it’s pretty solid for wildlife.

Yes, and for my shooting, those focusing issues (inconsistencies) are a bigger issue, than rolling shutter.

After Canon RF28-70mm F2.8, Canon can allow Tamron for their popular 70-180mm F2.8 VC/IS for the RF line-up which will help budget photographers like me.

With heavily reduced rolling shutter and considerably improved low light dynamic range and I'd buy 2 R7 MK2's.... Paired with the RF 200-800, the R7 is already a fantastic combination for long distance bird / wildlife photography.... Better dynamic range and improved AF would put the R7MK2 /RF 200-800 over the top as the best moderately priced wildlife combination on the market.... None of the other manufacturers can beat the Canons R7 / RF 200-800 flexible reach.... 320mm -1280mm effective zoom reach with the RF 200-800mm is something to be experienced.....👍👍 I use the R5 and 200-800 combination in low light conditions or where maximum reach is not an issue... A new improved R7 MK 2 might eliminate the need to change bodies in varying conditions...

If they come out with a battery grip, and add some more great lenses etc for this, and go more down the Professional style body like the r5 II type. I would happily pay for that. Especially if the specs and speed etc back it up. Honestly it would be a fantastic camera.

I think that an updated sensor R7 with the accelerator chip at 1,799 is a great starting price. It would sell better and develop a following that will likely support future developments in the line better. Then with a performance-enhancing battery grip (I'm afraid some people won't know or understand the benefit until they've lived with one for a while) that will bring the total investment to around 2,200, plenty of people will be able to live with that. The additional-additional benefit being increased lens sales across all manufacturers.

I gotta disagree somewhat on the Canon R10 not being a serious hobbyist camera. While it may not top tier for fast moving subjects it's an excellent camera for stills. As far as size goes, for someone who does street photography, a lighter setup is always appreciated and the auto focus isn't anything too shabby either. In street photography you have to move and lugging around a large heavy camera (along with whatever else you have) can easily tire you out. My only two "complaints" with the R10 are low light performance (which of course you can correct in photoshop) and the lack of simple and affordable primes (here's hoping 3rd party lens makers step up in this regard). Now if Canon came out with either an R10 M2 or a firmware update that helped with low light image processing that would be great.

I think it is a very good camera, but it's just too small with anyone with large hands to easily operate and limits the amount and size of the buttons. Raw capabilities are good, just look and feel I have an issue with.

@OrdinaryFilmmaker As a 90D user I think the R7 is too small and there's no battery grip either. Do you think they'll improve R7 and bring a more professional ASP-C camera with all the features people want in a higher price bracket like an R9 ?

The R7 does produce good results in mechanical shutter for the most part. But that is offset by very strong shutter shock, which is also very loud. It's loud enough to potentially scare away small birds and wildlife at close range. Reviews revealing that, plus the rolling electronic shutter, are why I cancelled my preorder. I would buy it mainly for wildlife shooting but it's just not good for that, IMO. Its best use is probably video.

Hi Simon, I'm using the R7 almost all time the electronic shutter. The issue you mentioned depends on the motives you shot on moving. I never had an issue as mostly I had no moving objects and if they are moving the result was quite ok. I have also a R6 but using this camera and appropriate lenses on hiking therefore I mostly prefer to have the R7 because the weight is much lower. Having low light situations I use the R6. I look forward to the R7 MII depending on the price I might buy.

Simon I have the Canon R5 (will soon be upgraded to the R5 MKII) the R6 MKII and the Canon R10. I think your comments are a little unfair about the R10. For its price point it is really well features and produces really good results. I bought this camera as a vacation camera and for occasional wildlife shoots and combining this camera with the RF 100-400mm makes for a very lightweight rig to take on holiday abroad and not break your arm with regular luggage in tow. I’ve had some pretty dramatic shots of birds with this combo I would not have got on either of my main full frame cameras and I’m very happy with it.

The R7 works great in first curtain. I am wondering if the R8 will ever have a mkii? I love this camera but would like a slightly faster fps in 1st curtain. Maybe 12 fps? I am considering upgrading to R6mkii to get the faster frame rate but an R8 mkii would be nice..

Is Canon able to improve the R7 enough for a price point of $1999? That would be a great feat, but would it be a good idea? With the R5 at deep discount now, as well as the R6-II, would an R7-II at this time make sense from a sales point of view? I'll have to think about that - Thanks for the updates, Simon!
@jeffgaboury3157

You do a great job Simon. I do think that the slow readout speed makes the 30fps electronic shutter more of a marketing thing for the R7, than something usable, at least for fast moving subjects like birds in flight. That being said, the 15fps mechanical and first curtain is more than adequately fast. On my R8 I never use the 40fps and even the 20fps gives me a LOT of shots. If I had a wish list feature for my beloved R8 it would be a "dial in frame rate" like on the new R5II and R1 (or my ten year old 7DII!!! Why they removed a feature from the R3, R5, R6, R6II, R8 that they had ten years ago is its own "grumble") However, I don't think the slow readout speed is only impacting the rolling shutter. Watching videos from Jan Wegener and Duade Paton, much of the speculation on the R7's sometimes unreliable AF (compared to the even earlier R5 and R6) is that the readout speed impacts the ability of Servo AF to track subjects reliably, sometimes even if they're relatively still. If that's the case, then the R7 getting a stacked sensor should not only give it a usable electronic shutter, but it should also give it the AF it finally deserves. I would like to see it go a bit upmarket, but hopefully they don't price it too high. The rest of the APS-C line also needs faster readout sensors, for the same reasons. They don't have to go stacked, but they should give something around the speed of the R5 and R6, or even the R6II/R8, at least for the R10. Move the R10 II up to where the R7 was and move the R7 II upmarket. I don't want to see a GS on the R7, unless there is a separate market. Not unless they can fix the issues with such sensors. Much wildlife photography will be done at dawn and dusk and low light performance is important. Wow, I sure do ramble on! LOL Keep up the GREAT work Simon!!!

Hey Simon. I am from Germany. So ist write in German. Der wichtigste Grund für eine R7 ist der Crop-Faktor. Und natürlich die Bildqualität und ein guter AF. Die Serienbildgeschwindigkeit wäre für mich sekundär. 20 fps reichen mir. Vielen Dank für deine Arbeit. Gruß aus Germany.

The R7 will forgive you Simon ;-) My wife will soon get the 70-200/2.8 non-Z to unlock her R7 for low-light wildlife, and I would be interested in the same equivalent focal range for the R5, if it were a similar price .. but the mighty 100-300/2.8 costs nearly 4 times as much in Europe, which is prohibitively expensive ..

Simon if you look at Canon mirror less camera bodies compared to the old dslr bodies the mirror less just look cheap & lacking quality even plasticy do you think it just material cost cutting? R7 in mechanical mode sounds like a bomb going off so also no good for wildlife.

You hit the nail right on the head. Not just rolling shutter problems, but the mechanical shutter sounds like a tank. Also low light performance sucks and no battery grip. They need to make the body the same as the R5, R6, R5ii, R6ii. If they do THIS it’ll be a home run for Canon, but Canon has too wake up, Sony & Nikon have surpassed them a long time ago. Canon wake up ! Btian

I think Canon’s shift to making a line of hybrid lenses has delayed or maybe canceled some of the lenses we were waiting for. I bought the 35mm f1.4L VCM lens to have a fast prime in that focal length but, to me, the image quality is only “very good” with some CA to be manually corrected outside of the lens profile in Adobe if you shoot raw. I’m still hoping for the 35mm f1.2L in the $2200-2500 USD price range to match the quality of the 50/1.2 and 85/1.2. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Definitely wouldn't mind the R7 Mkii at $2199 or even around $2500. That said the electronic shutter on the R7 is no slouch in terms of performance. Does it have its struggles with faster and smaller subjects, probably. I wouldn't steer anyone away from it. Took forward to the R7 Mkii, will probably be my 2025 purchase as well. The R6 mkiii is tempting, but the performance on the R6 Mkii is amazing, maybe 2026 or a later refresh like an MK IV or MK V.

The M200 / M6 form factor needs to return for APSC. In fact I think the R100 should have been a spiritual successor of M200, but instead Canon did the opposite -got rid of the swivel touch screen but kept the EVF instead, maybe to recycle and reuse the same R50 body to cut cost. Im more interested in seeing how Canon plans to mess up the naming of their APSC cameras again. Back in the DSLR days it was like, 200D sits below the 800D, but also there are the 2000D, 3000D, 4000D that sits even lower. Meanwhile the 9000D is the same thing as 77D but in Japan. Like, wut?

I've always felt the R7 was a niche camera, that just happens to suit me perfectly. Okay Simon, so you went back to qualify some of the statements you made about the R7, which was good, but still @7:29, you said > "the Electronic Shutter just can't be used". Hmmmm. I've used the Electronic shutter with zero rolling shutter effects, for over 300K photos in two years ! How can this be ?!?! Easy..... I generally care very little about taking, or viewing BIF shots. I'm mostly into tiny, skittish songbirds and such. I've said for a long time, a nice BIF shot is usually "cooler"..... but a really good perched bird shot is typically more "beautiful, and aesthetic". I strongly prefer the latter. Also IMPO, probably only 5% of the birds on the planet, show nicer color and feather patterns In-flight. Example; The 'best' Flicker shot, has to be In-flight..... which is why I haven't gotten the best Flicker shot yet :) lol But forget about me..... Go to a birding photography page, and scroll down through the shots. Generally speaking, a really great perched shot, gets more attention (likes) than a BIF shot. Sure, their are exceptions. IMPO, just the fact that it's a BIF shot, does not in itself, mean anything. It still needs to be on a nice BG (not blue sky) close enough for great detail, good color, correct exposure, and eye contact still helps a LOT. Personally speaking, I click the like button on about 1 out of every 500 BIF shots I see. But maybe 1 out of 10, for perched shots, of small, colorful birds. Still, an R7 Mk II that has a fast enough readout speed to prevent rolling shutter would be great. That would be nice for my Hummers in Hover. However I'm actually more interested in improvements with the AF and EAF, and a battery grip. Edit; For those of you using EFCS to eliminate rolling shutter issues, just so you know, the mechanical shutter in the R7 fails a LOT. I have one friend who has had two fail on him. And have seen it mentioned on the R7 specific FB pages quite a lot. I quit using the EFCS on my R7 specifically for this reason. I don't do a lot of BIF anyway... Some Hummers in Hover. But I have found that even in ES mode, taking a burst of shots, I usually get a few which show little to no rolling shutter effects. Just depends on what part of the stroke the wings were at when the shot fired. Also, IMPO, the reason the MS fails so much in the R7, is just that it slaps so hard (and loud) that it literally beats itself to pieces. Just a terrible design :(
