Lovely video. My best friends are Guatemalan so I have stayed there for 6 weeks a year for over a decade and plan to move to my small rural community when I retire. Your video is charming; you really captured the spirit of Guayemala... the people. Thank you for the delightful video.

Pana isn't all Guatemala. It's about Pana only. Pana it's village on the lake. I'm living almost 8 years in Guatemala and I'm happy here. You have all what you want. I live in Antigua. Internet perfect. Water - you can drink. Food - Austrian, french, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican. Many American supermarkets here. What different? Here is simple life, there horse race.

Love your take on the people, and their trusting, and honest nature. My philosophy is that people that travel are usually more open minded, and accepting of other cultures. What do you think?
@OurMillionAdventures Жыл бұрын
I totally agree. Travel opens your eyes to other ideas, cultures, and lifestyles. I also am a firm believer that if you look for good in the world you will find it.

Gracias amigo por apreciar Guatemala. Panajachel is unusual, to the rest of Guatemala.; most turístic , you can manage without Spanish, temperature ideal go with not heat or a/c. Guatemala City offers everything money can pay. It is good to take every common sense precaution to have a good experience. I am glad you buy bottled water , use seat belt , every thing you know is good in the USA, if is available there. Thanks.

Great video! Your kids are adorable and you did cover a lot of the differences in Guatemala, although I was surprised you did not mention the stray dogs. I agree with all your points but one thing. Unfortunately, in my experience living in Pana for four years, I have found that the storekeepers and vendors are extremely dishonest! Perhaps you didn't notice, but gringos get charged a different and MUCH higher price for everything. I have been shortchanged and lied to more times than I can count. They look like they're being helpful by adding it up on a calculator for you, but they're tacking on an extra Q20 or more. If you don't watch the weigh scale, they will put in less than you ask for but charge you the same. They double the price on everything. I'm not just talking about the vendors on Santander, whose job it is to make money off tourists as fast as possible! I'm talking about tiendas and the mercado. It is very unfortunate. They think that because we can't speak Spanish, we can't do math?? I have found only one tienda near my house that treats me fairly and honestly, and I have told them how much I appreciate that. It is best to know the prices of things before you shop and if a storekeeper is dishonest, tell them so and take your business elsewhere.
@OurMillionAdventures5 жыл бұрын
We did have some experiences with that, but overall it actually wasn't that bad for us and our positive experiences outweighed the negative ones. My wife and I both speak Spanish. I'm fluent and my wife is conversational, so we were pretty savvy when it came to getting taken for a ride with prices. We found that going to the Mercado with a Guatemalan friend made a huge difference. My wife would go with her Spanish teacher and vendors would give us fair prices because they knew they couldn't get away with it. We also haggled like crazy, and we are pretty stubborn with what we are willing to pay. At the same time though, we did have a couple people try to rip us off, especially when we hired a private boat to go across the lake. We just flat out refused to pay what they asked after they went back on their word, and they had to deal with it. Knowing Spanish definitely helped. When we went to the Reserva they tried to charge me an extra 20% on top of the lunch menu prices. I gave them a mouthful and they took it off. We made a lot of friends with tuk tuk drivers, vendors, and laundry people and they were always more than fair with us. So, yeah...I totally get what you are saying. I still do feel like our positive experiences far outweighed the negatives, and it was much easier to gain and hold trust with the Guatemalans we became friends with.
@OurMillionAdventures5 жыл бұрын
Oh, and stray dogs...lol I guess they just kind of faded into the background for us ha ha! We were in Mexico before Guatemala and the strays are SOOOO much worse there, that Guatemala felt pretty tame. Good catch though!

That happens here in the States also bro. I have been charged more for just being hispanic than just the regular gringo community. I just bring it up, when I see comments like this one. Not only I have been charged more but i have been discriminated against also. Where I have feared for my life also. In the case of over charging in Pana is not a race thing. They just not over charge gringos, but any one who is an outsider, that can be a capitalino, people from Guate city. Now that I live in the States and go back to Guate with dollars, I dont mind to be charge 1 quetzal or may be 5 Q more, as an american now, it doest affect my economy really, I try not to be that stingy.
@OurMillionAdventures4 жыл бұрын
@@bondedteam626 totally agree man. We often paid more for things while in Guatemala and Mexico, just because we knew the people needed it, but there were some times that people were down right dishonest and it wasn't a matter of 5 to 10 Q but like 50 bucks more. It does go both ways, like you said though. Discrimination is everywhere, and it is sickening! Why can't we all just treat each other as humans regardless of where we are from or what race we are?
