I’m surprised at how few states don’t have interstate spur routes. Alaska isn’t surprising, though New Mexico and Arizona are. There were some spur routes planned in the Phoenix area, but ADOT being late and losing any goodwill they had by the 1970s axed those plans. The closest thing Arizona has are a few state highways that are signed like spur routes. SR-51 in Phoenix was supposed to be I-510, and there’s a state route 210 in Tucson. When I-10 was being finished in Phoenix in the 1980s, the original plan for I-10 was to have it follow the Durango Curve (southern/western part of the downtown loop) and have the northern/eastern parts of the downtown loop be I-410, but despite the Deck Park Tunnel, it was decided that I-10 would follow that part of the loop, and I-17 would still continue along the Durango Curve.

I-405 in Portland is a very important highway. Because I-5 crosses over to the east side south of downtown and runs along the Willamette (will-am-ette), I-405 is a vital spur route that connect the metro's west to the east. There are 8 exits on I-405's short distance. Beginning from the immediate break-off from I-5, Harbor Drive connects downtown directly to the south waterfront. This neighborhood has been in explosion-growth mode since the late 90's. Oregon Health and Science's University has two campuses in the vacinity: the campus in the south waterfront neighborhood, and the campus up on Marquam Hill. These two campuses are connected by sky-tram. Also on the top of the hill is the Veterans hospital, and Shriner's Hospital. The next 3 exits take you to Portland State University, and other neighborhoods to the south of and in downtown. Perhaps the most important exchange with I-405 is US 26. 26 connects from US-101 on the coast and brings you into the cities of Hillsboro and Beaverton which are the 5th and 6th largest cities in the state respectively. Running east, US 26 breaks into downtown Portland as SW Market St (east bound) and SW Clay St (west bound), and continues across the Willamette River into the east metro neighborhoods, eventually leading you out to Mount Hood and beyond. The next two exits lead you into more downtown surface streets. What might be the most important connection along I-405, US highway 30 breaks off and goes into major industrial neighborhoods, also leading to the St. John's Bridge crossing over the Willamette into North-East Portland. Highway 30 leads out to Astoria on Oregon's northern coast. The final break-offs of I-405 are back onto I-5, and to one more hospital: Legacy Emanual. I-405 isn't just a small spur, it's a vital connection that links the west side to the north and south, and offers a path that allows you to avoid the connection/termination of I-84 with I-5. Not too shabby for a freeway only running 4.2 miles. I will not say that I-405 is perfect, but I will say that it serves a very important purpose.

The rest of the highway was never completed as a result of the freeway revolts of the 1960s. Vestiges of it exist like NJ Route 24, which connects 78 to 287 in Hanover. I also wonder if 78’s express lanes from Newark to Springfield are another vestige of the unbuilt 278 as the two would have run concurrently to Newark Airport and then separate. It could still be built by renumbering other roadways and bringing them interstate grade.

On the Oklahoma highway, there is an unsigned interstate, I-444, which is 2.51 miles long, versus the 5.4 of I-235.

In Hamilton County, Ohio we have a limited access highway called Cross County Highway. Only it doesn't actually cross the county. On the west side it begins and ends at I-275. On the east side it begins and ends at I-71. It took nearly 40 years to be built. The eastern section between I-75 and I-71 started construction in 1958. The western section connecting 275 to 75 wasn't completed until 1997.

I'm surprised you didn't mention unsigned I-296 in Grand Rapids, MI which is concurrent with US-131 and connects I-196 to I-96. I-375 is definitely slated to go on the chopping block.

CA has 2 short Interstates, 238 which connects the 580 to the 880 and the I-380 that one connects the US 101 and the I-280 to San Francisco International Airport, Both 238 and 380 are in the Bay Area, 238 is in the East SF Bay in Hayward, CA and the I-380 in Millbrae, CA in the San Francisco Peninsula

I was starting to worry there. Montana, where driving between Billings and Bozeman can be considered a commute of 137 miles, our shortest "Highway" is less than a mile long is so appropriate.

I've listened to your explanation beginning at 1:26 five or six times, and I still don't understand what the heck you mean. Other than that, good job (except there are always going to be those who argue the finer points).

I did the same and thought I was the only one who was confused about it. I have no idea why that interstate would be excluded based on the ground rules.

I was trying to think what would count in Wyoming... I honestly thought you accidentally forgot Wyoming as I thought for sure it would be longer than maybe even i10 in NM. BUT.. apparently the road I drive on almost every single day is technically a designated interstate lol.

Ohio has I-480 N, 1.99 Miles long, so Ohio should crack the top 15
@Irishfan4 ай бұрын
I-480 is a lot longer than 1.99 miles. It goes from the Turnpike near Elyria across the south edge of Cleveland and its southern suburbs to I-271 in Warrensville Heights and back to the Turnpike near Streetsboro. I don't know the exact mileage because I usually drove it between the Turnpike and Ridge Rd. When I went to my grandmother's house in Parma. That portion was about a fifteen minute drive.

I think I-110 in El Paso has exactly one sign (a "BEGIN") right after the customs facility at the Bridge of the Americas 😅. It's not signed from Interstate 10 at all. I know that it's concurrent with US Route 54 for about half of its length...all the signs in El Paso for the route coming from Interstate 10 say "US 54 South/Juarez, Mexico"

I-684 in Connecticut is actually shorter than I-291 because of the small piece that goes through Greenwich.

I was always wondering what was the second shortest interstate portion of an administrative division of the US, meaning the shortest portion of an interstate in a US state, right after the Capital Beltway over the Potomac River in the southern tip of Washington, DC, but that portion in the District of Columbia doesn't count since it's not a state, it's a federal district.

California has one shorter than 238. It's also in the Bay Area, I-980 in Oakland is 2.03 miles so 0.10 miles shorter than I-238.

Disappointed to see the exclusion of DC. Guess getting our eighth place for the 1.39 miles of I-695 is just another reason we need statehood.

You’re the Capital District. Not a US State. End of discussion.
@SSGranor4 ай бұрын
@@SpruceOaks No, what we are is 700,000 people who live at the whim of a Congress we don't even get a single voting representative in and courts and prosecutors who are neither elected by us nor appointed by the people we do elect. And, anyway, the Constitution states that there must _be_ a Federal District, not how large or even where it is. (It's the Residence Act of 1790 that does that; and, that's already been modified once when Arlington and Alexandria were retroceded to Virginia in 1847.) Plans for DC statehood carve out most of the areas where the federal government facilities are to remain as a federal district. (So, White House, the Capitol, the National Mall and so on would still be in the Federal District.) But, the city of DC would get to have congressional representation and the same degree of self-rule as any other state.

@@SpruceOaksNo, it's not the end of the discussion. It sucks that they're a ping pong ball between the whims of whatever party is in power. But I'll spell it out for you: it sucks when the Republicans are the majority because they don't care about human rights or even democracy nowadays.
