I-195 in Maine is just the offramp for Exit 36 to Saco, linking I-95 to US-1 and it follows ME-5 to the outskirts of Old Orchard Beach where they merge. No one here calls it I-195 (same with I-495, which is simply called the Falmouth Spur that connects I-95 to I-295 north of Portland).

I’m surprised at how few states don’t have interstate spur routes. Alaska isn’t surprising, though New Mexico and Arizona are. There were some spur routes planned in the Phoenix area, but ADOT being late and losing any goodwill they had by the 1970s axed those plans. The closest thing Arizona has are a few state highways that are signed like spur routes. SR-51 in Phoenix was supposed to be I-510, and there’s a state route 210 in Tucson. When I-10 was being finished in Phoenix in the 1980s, the original plan for I-10 was to have it follow the Durango Curve (southern/western part of the downtown loop) and have the northern/eastern parts of the downtown loop be I-410, but despite the Deck Park Tunnel, it was decided that I-10 would follow that part of the loop, and I-17 would still continue along the Durango Curve.

New York interstate I-878 originally was built as part of NY I-78, which was supposed to cross Manhattan on the Lower Manhattan Expressway, go over the Williamsburg Bridge, ram through Bushwick along Brooklyn Broadway, meet the Jackie Robinson Parkway, run along Atlantic Avenue, Conduit Boulevard, and Belt Parkway to the existing I-878 and NY SR-878, then cut across southeastern Queens to the Clearview Expressway I-295, whereupon it would run north and over the Throgs Neck Bridge to where the existing highway splits, and finally join I-95.

In Rhode Island, I-95 passes through for 42.36 miles, The I-295 loop starts here, but runs for 22.35 miles ending in MA, and the I-195 spur also starts here, runs for 3.82 miles, and also ends in MA.

You're absolutely correct! I-405 is just over 4 miles but I-105 is slightly under 4 miles. I wonder if Beaver's argument is that I-105 is highway 126, but signed differently in the span from I-5 west and south to downtown Eugene. The road never really "stops" or "comes to an end" because 105 is just an overlay of 126 for a time. I guess the argument could be made that I-405 is not a section of another highway with a different title and standard that goes back to the other highway's number after a certain distance. But I'm totally with you. I-105 IS the shortest in Oregon. I have often wondered why Delta Highway wasn't chosen or made to be I-105. I wish that crossings with Royal Ave, and Roosevelt would be upgraded to interchanges but I guess we can't all have what we wish for.

3:46 I-865 used to also be signed I-465 because it essentially _was_ a glorified offramp. It has no ramps, but had mileage in the 900s to differentiate it from the rest of 465. I-405 in Portland is a very important highway. Because I-5 crosses over to the east side south of downtown and runs along the Willamette (will-am-ette), I-405 is a vital spur route that connect the metro's west to the east. There are 8 exits on I-405's short distance. Beginning from the immediate break-off from I-5, Harbor Drive connects downtown directly to the south waterfront. This neighborhood has been in explosion-growth mode since the late 90's. Oregon Health and Science's University has two campuses in the vacinity: the campus in the south waterfront neighborhood, and the campus up on Marquam Hill. These two campuses are connected by sky-tram. Also on the top of the hill is the Veterans hospital, and Shriner's Hospital. The next 3 exits take you to Portland State University, and other neighborhoods to the south of and in downtown. Perhaps the most important exchange with I-405 is US 26. 26 connects from US-101 on the coast and brings you into the cities of Hillsboro and Beaverton which are the 5th and 6th largest cities in the state respectively. Running east, US 26 breaks into downtown Portland as SW Market St (east bound) and SW Clay St (west bound), and continues across the Willamette River into the east metro neighborhoods, eventually leading you out to Mount Hood and beyond. The next two exits lead you into more downtown surface streets. What might be the most important connection along I-405, US highway 30 breaks off and goes into major industrial neighborhoods, also leading to the St. John's Bridge crossing over the Willamette into North-East Portland. Highway 30 leads out to Astoria on Oregon's northern coast. The final break-offs of I-405 are back onto I-5, and to one more hospital: Legacy Emanual. I-405 isn't just a small spur, it's a vital connection that links the west side to the north and south, and offers a path that allows you to avoid the connection/termination of I-84 with I-5. Not too shabby for a freeway only running 4.2 miles. I will not say that I-405 is perfect, but I will say that it serves a very important purpose.

It technically stops at Memorial Highway making it 1 mile long or less if you don't count the ramps and should be in 4th place. After Memorial Highway, it turns to ND State Highway 810 which loops around the south end of town and connects back up to Interstate 94 on the east end of town. It's strange that Google Maps started showing that stretch as all being a part of I-194 when it used to never show it as that to begin with.

So I 86 isn't the shortest interstate in Pennsylvania? It originated in New York State, goes into Pennsylvania for about a mile, and then back into New York

Your list and rules are odd. 676 is not NJ’s shortest interstate. 278 is. It is 2 miles long connecting the NJ Turnpike to the Goethals Bridge. The rest of the highway was never completed as a result of the freeway revolts of the 1960s. Vestiges of it exist like NJ Route 24, which connects 78 to 287 in Hanover. I also wonder if 78’s express lanes from Newark to Springfield are another vestige of the unbuilt 278 as the two would have run concurrently to Newark Airport and then separate. It could still be built by renumbering other roadways and bringing them interstate grade.

Here to mention that I-215 in Nevada won't stay that short forever. There are plans to upgrade CR-215 to interstate standards, then add it to I-215. EDIT: I'll also mention that I-238 isn't the shortest interstate in California. That's actually I-380 at basically just a mile, and it seems to only exist to connect I-280 to SFO.

In Hamilton County, Ohio we have a limited access highway called Cross County Highway. Only it doesn't actually cross the county. On the west side it begins and ends at I-275. On the east side it begins and ends at I-71. It took nearly 40 years to be built. The eastern section between I-75 and I-71 started construction in 1958. The western section connecting 275 to 75 wasn't completed until 1997.

@@SpruceOaks No, what we are is 700,000 people who live at the whim of a Congress we don't even get a single voting representative in and courts and prosecutors who are neither elected by us nor appointed by the people we do elect. And, anyway, the Constitution states that there must _be_ a Federal District, not how large or even where it is. (It's the Residence Act of 1790 that does that; and, that's already been modified once when Arlington and Alexandria were retroceded to Virginia in 1847.) Plans for DC statehood carve out most of the areas where the federal government facilities are to remain as a federal district. (So, White House, the Capitol, the National Mall and so on would still be in the Federal District.) But, the city of DC would get to have congressional representation and the same degree of self-rule as any other state.
