What's going on with PENNY BOARDS?

What's going on with penny boards? One of my viewers recently asked in a comment if the company was in financial trouble...while I started looking into penny boards in general more, it became pretty wild pretty quick that something crazy has been happening in the penny board market!

All makes sense, Tyler, and while Penny reduced their prices significantly over X number of months, I was glad to help them reduce their inventory by buying 3 new Penny boards (27", 32" and 36"). Always glad to help out Penny when they help out their customers, and although some may be okay, I steer clear of Penny knock offs.

I'd buy more, but I still have 3 brand-new Penny boards (27", 32" and 36") that I haven't even ridden yet because I already ride a 22", a 27", a 32", and 36". I guess I can do like Tyler and lend these out to family and friends when they visit us. 🙂

Interesting video I think it's to bring in more of an audience to the brand. I bought mine used and am always looking for the real Penny. I think Penny should branch out and sell more wheels in different hardness not just 83A and they are always sold out on the trucks. I love the older penny backpack for my 22" so much storage compartments 😅 I am hoping they have one reduced surfskate 29, 32 and 36 and I might buy them direct.

I got mine for $3 from goodwill :) I ride maybe 10-15 miles a week as I park off campus and use it to get around basically anywhere I’d otherwise walk. Any suggestions for performance or cosmetic mods?

Let’s go!! That’s dope! I’d just check-in with the full board - how’s the deck? How’re the wheels, trucks, bearings, bushings, etc.? If it riding well, then keep on, and any modifications you’d want to make (different wheels, lights, grip tape, etc.) would be personal preference

I bought a Madd Gear penny board for $30, but later discovered Penny Skateboards was clearing theirs out for $25. Considering shipping and taxes, the total cost would have been $40 from Penny. I regret not researching more and spending the extra $10 for the OG brand, but the Madd Gear board seems solid. I just wanted to experience the original brand.

Saw this video yesterday. Ordered a penny board yesterday. 😅 I grew up in the 90's and remember my first cruiser board and Rollerblades. I started inline skating last year about this time. For sure! And yeah it is pretty wild to see for the first time. To answer your other questions, there likely will be a future sale (I’m assuming around Black Friday in November) and maybe around Christmas (because they always have done this). I don’t know to what extend though as their boards are already cheaper than normal. I’m not saying Penny actually does this, but I know other companies have started to “pretend” their items are on sale by putting a higher number and then “crossing” it out to look like an item is on sale, when in fact it was it’s “normal” price as before. But we’ll see! If you want to wait, that’s totally fine; I’m sure there’ll be something later for you to find

I have been seeing deep discounts lately. And buying probably too much. I see the ones sent are made in either korea or China. I’m not sure when over seas production started. My guess is they ramped up production after the huge sales of 2020. Now fire sale them due to warehouse costs.

It’s all in stock market economics is what I like to call it. This cash flow they got from this sale will be good on the balance sheet this year. Any old stock not sold will most likely be written off as a loss. Win win

just a thought, its likely they wanted to experiment with all the colored plastics theyve stockpiled and wanted to sell some decks at a discount, cause back when i built my plastic cruiser for college when pennys were still 100+, like 10 years ago mind that, all the penny boards i seen were darker colors that people rode, seeing all the colors now feels so experimental, but again, just a thought

Price for any product doesn't normally goes below direct costs (production, transport, storage, sale costs and so on). In case of pennies it is between 30 and 50 I guess.

My knee-jerk feeling is that it's the drug dealer model. Get you hooked with a board that rides well but doesnt look ideal, then bam you buy a second board. Other way around, you buy a board you like, like i did and pick up another affordable board as a back up

i dont know where you are but they used to offer all sorts of colours for wheels aftermarket, now its f black only??? when they stopped supplying colours I stopped supporting them, i last bought a mix match set like 4 years ago. now its clearly a ploy to sell decks... so f cheap. fuck em. my old pennys arent going anywhere mostly i put ojs on em anyway. fvck they became so cheap.

I’m in CT in the US, and I noticed they definitely have switched things up since around pre-Covid till now. Penny boards do last an insanely long time if you take care of them so I’m glad to hear you’re still kicking it with your old board 🤘🏼
