In 1995 an idiot car driver bumped into my Kawasaki GPZ 500 and sent me sliding across the motorway. My slide was stopped by my head banging into the centre safety barrier. Long story short: shattered bones, torn ligaments, sredded skin, multiple surgery. However, my head remained intact. Thank you, Arai! I owe you my life!

I'm Japanese, most true Japanese products are actually not for the money, but the genuine pureness and legacy. This was the reason MADE IN JAPAN was born.
@brenturquhart709025 күн бұрын
Agreed. I’m not Japanese, but I have a lot of respect for the craftsmanship the Japanese put into their products. I have a number of Japanese made Damascus knives, and their knives are the best knives 8n the world. They are the sharpest too, that was a hard learned lesson. I hav3 the scars to prove it. Every time I use those knives, I am amazed at their beauty. They are handmade works of art. I know what goes into making those knives. Those artists must prove to their masters that they have mastered one aspect before moving to the next. It takes many years before they are allowed to make a knife like mine. It’s been that way for hundreds of years. I just hope that type of craftsmanship will continue, but it’s my understanding that it’s becoming harder and harder to find apprentices who are willing to put in the effort required to become masters of their crafts. Unfortunately most people are not willing to pay for those goods that are made by the hands of these artists. When friends cover to my house and see my knives, they ask about my knives and when they ask the cost, they think I’m insane to pay what I paid. These are the same people that wear fancy watches, or designer handbags, and yet thinking that $700 on a knife that will las5 a lifetime was spending too much. Go figure.

Been using Arai helmets for nearly 40 years, because 1) I saw some wrecks that I did't think were survivable, but were survived with Arai helmets, and 2) a few guys I knew, guys that scoffed at my ponying up the dough for the Arai I had at the time, got traumatic brain injuries, with 2 of them never regaining their long term memory. They couldn't remember me, or what they'd done the day before. A few of the bad accidents I saw, the guys with the Arai's ALWAYS not only survived, but were conscious, and alert while we were rescuing them...and that sold me on these AMAZING helmets! The aren't just rumored to be the best, they ARE THE BEST, hands down, no doubt about it. 90% of professional racers use Arai helmets for this reason!! I love these things, and won't ride my R1150RS without it, not even in a state that says I can....nope, not me: seen too many traumatic brain injuries! Like I tell my daughter, who also rides: everything I am is between my ears, and if I lose that, who am I? Beats me? Many of those who bought cheap helmets can't tell you who they are, now, not anymore, tragically. Pony up the extra cash, and get an Arai. It's worth it!
@mrnobody1546Ай бұрын
@@notexpatjoe i think he meant 90% racers of probably all category, which makes more sense, although now there are also many other options too like shoei for example. Tho, i do believe that Arai is one of the best if not the best when it comes to safety

If you tried an Arai helmet and it didn't fit your head, then... 1. The salesperson fitting your helmet was an idiot! 2. The salesperson was never educated and trained to properly fit a helmet! 3. The salesperson did not provide you their due diligence and have you try on helmets from their different model lines (which are made for different head shapes)! 4. You(!) were in too much of a hurry when trying on helmets! I did my own comparative research years ago and came to the only possible conclusion... Arai makes the best (and safest) helmet - in the world! Arai helmets fit the widest range of head shapes - in the world! Arai helmets are preferred by drivers in all forms of Motorsport above all other brands - in the world! I've worn Arai helmets my entire life and will wear no other brand (they don't fit me properly anyway, I know, I've been trying on other brands for years!) Do yourself a HUGE favor... go get properly fitted by someone trained to do it correctly, and I KNOW that you'll find the most comfortable (and safest) helmet you've ever worn!!!
@MarkJYule2 ай бұрын
@@johnwentworth666 I've tried more than once and in more than one store - unfortunately, up here in Scotland we don't have some of the same fitting gurus that other Countries have. Even my latest Shoei could do with some fore-aft tweaking and I intend to travel to Newcastle to get that done. Weirdly, the closest off the rack I've tried of late was an HJC - from what I've read and seen - Shoei and HJC fit oval shaped heads better and Arai (by default) are more round 🤷♂️ and I have a pronounced oval head. I'm jealous of those who have quick access to shops with a full range of liners and staff that can switch them out to optimise fit - but believe me I've tried many Arai lids - since the late 1980s and never found one that suited my head shape (out of the box). Shoeis - in the he main, do.

It bothers me every time I see a video or anything of someone riding without a helmet just because I know from experience with 3 skull fractures, a broken neck and many concussions from when I was young and none of these were from motorcycle accidents but trampolines, winter sledding getting hit by two others on one sled lol etc. So ALWAYS wear your helmet anytime it might be needed!! Very good video !!! I know a few brands of helmets because I drove and sold motorcycles, atvs , and power water crafts. I used a Shoei and a Bell. But we know that Arai was the other popular brand in the market on that time. Thanks again for the information.

Grazie Alberto. Fantastic expose on a often dismissed subject. Wish my brothers would have purchased Arai, they might have lived longer.

2013 I had accident in Indonesia with a truck. Broke some bones, but Arai Tour- X saved my life. No other brand helmet used ever since. Thank you Arai for saving my life 👏🏻

I used to work for a motorcycle company where we sold Arai. We had a demo outer shell. You can physically stand on it and it doesn't deform, at all! You make an interesting point about SHARP in the UK. I've spoken to them regarding tests on the Tour X 4 and was told that Arai would not give them 15+ helmets to test. They need multiple helmets to make a fair comparison. I also find it odd that they score low on their website for safety as they are solid and well made. My friend, who also worked at the same shop had a small accident in his Shoe XPS Pro, falling backwards at 20mph and thr whole rear deformed complete, something an Arai wouldn't do and these score higher with SHARP. Perhaps they like the fact it deforms like a car does in an impact? Fun fact, we are told that Arai are the only helmet brand which are fire retardant, so that's why racing car drivers use them.

Re the safety ratings: I seem to recall there are tradeoffs between protection for high speed impacts vs slow speed, and Arai refused to compromise on high speed impact protection for their race-oriented helmets. The standard testing of course scores both and then averages the result, and then "which brand is the safest" rankings average across the whole product range. And then there are a whole bunch of features that aren't included in standard tests but do matter for safety. Arai are adamant that making their helmets to score higher on the standard tests would make them less safe in reality. Parting thought: just the fact that open-face helmets are able to be certified and legally sold should tell you something about how helmet certification works.

You want a helmet to deform. If it deforms that means energy is used to deform the helmet, and not your head. A solid helmet will transmit energy to the inner layers and eventually the head. Ever hit a brick wall with a metal pipe? Hurts the hands doesn't it? As long as the deformation doesn't reach your head, that's fine. That's why you generally have a composite, then foam. The deformation of the composite radiates around the shell structure. Most of the energy is absorbed here. Then the foam takes further energy out. If the shell is totally solid and doesn't deform, the inner foam and your neck will take this energy. It has to go somewhere.

@@aidencoder ARAI say no, Shoei say yes. It's one of those! Given Arai is fire retardant and used a lot in racing sports, I tend to sway towards that.
@aidencoderАй бұрын
@@Omnislash_Vince I'll side with physics, give me an outer shell that deforms to absorb the impact.
@Omnislash_VinceАй бұрын
@@aidencoder The Arai Difference: Regardless of brand, there is a limit to how much impact energy any helmet can absorb. Therefore, Arai believes that ‘glancing off’ is essential. Arai believes a strong shell is another essential aspect to our helmets. If the shell were to be deformed or destroyed in an impact, it would be unable to glance off further impacts. A strong shell can extend ‘glancing off’ ability, avoiding as much direct impact energy as possible. When it comes to an Arai shell, we are undeniably obsessed with accumulating improvements to its strength.

Fascinating insight into Arai. What a position to take. Then their brand has always been regarded as one of the best. I have owned a top of the range race rep Arai. In days when I had more money. Unfortunately now as a pensioner, couldn't afford another. If I could afford one. I would have another in a heart beat. Superb product. Sadly have to make do with my Shark.
