Content on my Austin and Rover Metros has been rather thin on the ground recently, but there's a good reason...

I was just going to bed and what showed up on my laptop, a new "Twin-Cam." Ed, don't rush, working on your car is for the "fun of it." My son and I restored a 1968 Dodge Super Bee, it took three years, but it was fun. All of your cars are in good hands. Happy New Year to all.

I was depressed because my team lost by 1 point in the college football playoffs so I watched a car show to cheer me up. I've seen several of your shows and like to see different cars from Europe/ UK. Just subscribed

Many thanks for the Metro update Ed. Progress takes time and in my opinion it's very well worth doing to keep the Metro's on the road for the long term. I miss my old 1.3L even after over 20 odd years, it was a great car.

Good to see the Metro again. These "simple" projects always take longer than you can imagine. I usually work out a rough estimate and the add a month. Seems to be somewhere close. Now you've done one, the next will be a piece of cake. It will, honestly. 😍

I hope you reset the end float for the idler gear and the primary gear so they don’t chatter on idle, it also would have been easier fitting the clutch before you fitted the engine, I’m happy your keeping the old metros alive though

Many, many moons ago, I helped my grandad with a rebuild in my 1974 Morris Mini 1000. One of the jobs was a new clutch but the rebuild was all new floors, new front end except the bonnet , subframes, and brakes including pipes ect. I absolutely loved that car.

I have a lot of sympathy, the weather has been horrible! After that nice autumn, we've had what seemed like weeks of below freezing and now lots of rain, and you had it even worse that side of the Pennines. It doesn't make for good weather to work on cars, even with a garage. Hardly any daylight right now too. Springs not far off! Interesting that Melvin will look pretty much original externally, but updated under the skin, however Melody is updated externally but the internals are still functionally standard. Looking forward to the videos even though I'm not a Metro nerd!

Hey Ed, great video and project. There's a 1989 Metro City for sale in Donegal for about 3700 euro...around 10000 miles and immaculate - it was repainted due to the paint fading. I'm SO tempted, but too scared 😂 I'd have to take out a loan and would be using it as a daily driver...too worried that it would rot after a month 😂

watch the torque setting on the main clutch to crank shaft bolt after you've fitted it, they can work loose and shred the woodruff key locating slot in the end of the crank shaft.

You do mods the same way I do: using parts from other models, but from the same manufacturer. The result is it ends up looking like some kind of prototype or rare trim package. It looks correct, but totally different.

Ed sorry if this is a repeat but my computer skills are out of the Ark, just like me and I must have pressed the Send button before I finished it - if I did! Not being on social media I have just got this and delighted that we can look forward to more videos of Metro fettling when you can fit them in between your superb reviews. Even and Roger Thesaurus can't provide me with the words to say just how much I admire your superbly researched, presented and infectiously enthusiastic weekly reviews that make are head and shoulders above any of the scripted and reviewed efforts on TV, and by other internet ones. You no doubt and obviously script yours by the seamless flow, but you have none of the scripted 'clever funnies' that pepper some, so that everything your say is utterly credible, as well as totally enjoyable. I would like to bet that some those you had sponsorship for resulted in them having great sales. so I hope you benefitted. Keep up the good work of sincere, believable and totally enjoyable videos! Finding them via my gross technical inadequacies is like sitting under a Greek tree at the feet of an automotive Socrates being individually taught and enlightened! Brilliant and no reply required as all I want to say is thanks, praise and encourage you! Rob

Personally I find 5 door Metros more interesting. I forget now which car tuning magazine I saw a sleeper 5 door Metro in many years back. It was something like Max Power or similar. It was a white 1.0 L 5 door, but running full MG Metro Turbo mechanicals. It was kept looking completely standard on the outside, except for some nice pepperpot alloys. The one and only change to the interior was to change the instrument cluster to MG Turbo spec. I bet it surprised a few people. I love sleepers like that.

MG interior. Nice. Great what you're doing.I was wondering, if you was born in the 70s. You'll have a metro or a older car? Nearly had a metro MG. In the 90s but rusty arches after 5 years from new.

The gearbox on my MG Metro failed after 30K miles - this really spoiled my experience of the car. Bearing failure apparently. Sharing oil with the engine never seemed a good idea but I hoped after 25 years they might have got any issues resolved.

Can someone help? back in 1984 my parent's rented a Metro City and we drove all around the UK in it. In my mind it had a yellow or orange engine. Would that have been correct?
@TwinCam

Don’t worry, all is good. I had a hand getting the engine in the car! Yep, all 998cc Metros had yellow engines, while the 1275cc cars had red engines.

I kinda get the feeling that you’re much happier doing your excellent video reviews of the quirky cars that you have specialised knowledge of rather than doing relatively major engine in and out jobs with limited space and equipment. Let Ed China do the oily stuff and then you can continue to give us the content that you’re really good at.
