What's good about the Shure SM7b as compared to Heil PR40? voice over mic

20 years ago I would have preferred the Shure SM7B for it's dark, fuzzy warmth. But now with moderate hearing loss, the Heil PR-40 with its crisper top end and less muddy lows wins simply because it made each of the voices more intelligible.

We've used the Heil PR40 for years and love it because it is more articulate, especially when compared with the SM7B or ElectroVoice RE20. Admittedly, there are some voices, primarily females or people with heavy sibilance in their delivery, that require the highs to be rolled-off the PR40. From a pure communications perspective, the PR40, out-of-the-box and with no processing is a better mic for spoken word content targeting consumers over 65. Roughly 1/3 of people over 65 and 1/2 of people over 75 have high frequency hearing loss. Indeed, Shure Inc is an audio juggernaut with offices spanning the globe. However, personally, I love Bob Heil's story of being a 'sound guy' from St. Louis that invented ways for acts like Frampton, Grateful Dead, The Eagles and others to sound great on stage and in studio.

That Heil is a bit more lively and crisp. And when the Shure is kicked in, it just sounds muted and dead compared to the Heil. How is Heil not a more popular unit?

Heil PR40 wins every time, the script is well understood, and bringing the message to the other side ( the listener who might be using sub-standard receiver/amp/ speaker ) is what's important here, yet creating bass out of nothing is sadly the flavor of our time.

Would have been nice to hear the SM7B with the presence boost engaged to make it more similar to the Heil. The presence "boost" in the Shure is actually the LACK of a dip filter engaged. Thanks for the comparison.

Not really close in this a/b Shure is muddy Pr40 has tight low end with a lofty articulation that is so well done.

I actually prefered the pr40. But it was her voice that was the clear winner. That woman could read the phone book through a mic she bought from Dollar General and it would still sound amazing. She could replace Alexa.

Shure was easy to decide. Hands down. Clear and deep, while still maintaining the natural bits of those voices.

The Shure sounds like it was placed inside of a shoebox. The Heil sounds more lifelike to me. I'm somewhat biased (I own a PR40) but I was thinking about buying the SM7b. Not anymore.

The 7b is a dynamic mic but it is definitely preferred over the Heil pr40 condenser.

ambos son muy buenos. es real que necesitan demasiada ganancia y eso es complicado. en esta prueba me gusto mas el heil tiene un toque mas brillante pero a la vez me parece muy medioso. el tema esta en para que se necesita , si es vivo o una grabacion porque luego con el proceso hay que ver que puede ser mas productivo. excelente prueba y gracias por compartir. me gustaria que pruebes el microtech gefell m930 vs el neuman tlm 103 ,

There is something about the PR40 in this demo that annoys the crap out of me and made me favor the SM7b instantly. Something very odd in the higher mids. Like certain frequencies from the breath that gets enhanced too much. This happens especially in the female demo.

There’s a peak in the high mods on the Pr40 It’s meant to enhance speech clarity but its more of an annoyance.

The Heil pr40 is so much easier to listen to and understand. SM7b has to much bass.
