Have you considered building a cob house? A house like that you can build in every shape you want. For insolation you can use straw bales. I was just fantasizing. You first have to get your visa. I hope you get it this time. You deserve it.

Ugh, I’m so sorry you guys are going through this! We came over to Portugal a little over a year ago and have driven all over the country multiple times, looking for where to buy. In doing so, we’ve seen numerous abandoned villages, which are either dead or on their way out. The country needs you, and others like you, willing to revitalize and bring life to these areas! Totally understand the frustration (and idea to move to Morocco!). I’m positive things will work out in your favor, hopefully sooner than later. Also, note to Missy - been meaning to comment how your positivity and style are always uplifting to watch. Don’t let this bureaucracy dim your light. ✨ Hang in there, guys! 💕

Aw thanks Mg what a lovely comment... We shall keep the faith and our lights shining a bright! It is, equally frustrating especially as, we've lived here over a year, are intergrated and as you say revitalising an area which is, rapidly becoming empty of its people as the young move to cities etc.. Around us 5 farmers left of 100s of plots, all of them in their 70s... But prob 30 or so off grid homesteading peeps, and family like us... And thanks, again for your positivism 💚💚🌻

I'd hate to see you end this, it's amazing to follow, but my mail to you can still be a last way out but I honestly hope it isn't where it ends, but you have the offer/option. artichokes awe amazing! some don't like em but they make good soups. should be able to leave them in the ground... we can do that here in Denmark which is much colder... they have a nutty flavor, I have even used them in mashed taters before :D good taste keep your spirits high, your lives colorful and your smiles big :D go go Missy and Don!

About Jerusalem artichoke: Make them in the owen with garlic and oil or with potatoes in a gratin with cream. You can leave some of them in the soil over the winter. Here in Sweden we just leave them and they can endure as low as - 25 grC. But, beware of the effect of the inulin that is in the fruit. Dont eat too much or too many otherwise you will get very fartish. 🥴

What a joke. I’m glad you were able to submit the appeal from your immigration lawyer. We’re sending positive vibes your way.🤞🏻 Those pink flowers are gorgeous 🌺 and obviously popular with the bees 🐝 ❤️ This is a great time of year to get your gardens ready and plant the cool weather crops. A permaculture design might make a tropical garden possible there. Maybe plant a moringa tree and a mango tree, some citrus trees as the next level and the banana trees should get enough shelter from the other trees to flourish. A living mulch layer like strawberries or sweet potatoes will help maintain moisture in the soil plus providing another edible layer. The sweet potatoes provide edible leaves as well as the tubers. They are near the top of my list to buy soon.

I think you are a lovely family. Your daughter is such a sweet girl. I, being an old Portuguese retired teacher, have been watching the desertification of my dear country. You are right and it is public knowledge that the interior of my country has lost people over the years. So I am very pleased to see you and other immigrants coming here and giving life to the land. I follow several KZbinrs like you. It is entertaining too. You even introduce me to some parts of Portugal I hardly know. I am a city person, I do not deny that. I spent the first 8 years of my life on the Algarve, and then the family moved to Lisbon where I grew up. I do not live there now. I had to move to the outskirts because I could not afford a house there. When I got married the prices of the houses went up due to the Portuguese who came here from the colonies (Angola and Mozambique became independent in 1975) and now it is the golden visas. But I accept it. In a way I think God had plans for me since I came to live in a house with a garden where I can have dogs. In fact I have rescued some of them. In Portugal there many animal lovers, like me, who are fond of them and try to protect them from those who are mean to them. So, though I go to Lisbon very often I am pleased when I come back to the place where I live now. It is much quieter. Anyway, back to you, I am glad that you have chosen to live completely off grid, in those remote areas of Portugal, I wish you all the good and that you get your well deserved visas.

As an immigrant to the UK I can tell you that the UK make it a holy hell to get a visa that costs thousands of pounds and many years of blood sweat and tears. I can only imagine what the Portuguese have to go through to go to the UK. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Not that I don't sympathise with your plight. I have been there. Its horrible and gut wrenching.

I get your logic, except the UK is overpopulated vs Portugal which has the oldest and fastest declining population in Europe. Also vast swaths of land and houses even entire villages, are empty. Portugal is being revitalised by people like us, that's not me sounding arrogant, it's, straight from the locals including our mayor... But certainly get your point. On the basis we have private health care, jobs, land etc would make sense to approve us 💚

@@TheWildlandersOffGrid I completely agree with you. Portugal needs migrants... although, UK needs them too in certain areas. Just to let you know a British person is not really responsible for the immigration policy of the UK.. if immigrants get a hard time in the UK that's between the immigration people and the immigrant. In the same way these guys can't blame the Portuguese people for there struggles.. This situation is crazy as Portugal is desperate for new life in the central region of the country.. it's a dying population.. just look at the population figures .. all on the internet to see.. The UK is very crowded a totally different situation and I understand why it's harder to get in there.. I imagine trying to get into Norway or Switerland is probably much harder again... It's not a tit for tat situation... I actually find your reasoning very petty and childish

Most come to UK as economic migrants. UK is over populated, we can’t have just anyone in to use it’s welfare benefits, social housing, free heath care, education etc at tge expense of it’s own citizens. it is only right UK chooses who they allow in.

I just leave the tubers in the ground now and they seem to be fine. You could always mulch the area if it was in a frost pocket. When I did dig them all up, I noticed that the Chinese variety sent out runners which would lead to another tuber deeper in the ground. The White Truffle variety seemed to be more localised to the base of the plant.

Everything you gave us last year did well, anything unusual really. We've to lift all our perennials etc soon as putting in swales, etc... So will need lots of coverage to hold swales and berms 💚 And the voles! What buggers they seem to love my bananas!! All our carrots too!!!

@@TheWildlandersOffGrid Now we know how Elmer Fudd feels. I could dig up a comfrey plant when you need it and divide the roots. I'm not sure if you were going to use strawberries for ground cover, but I could dig some plants up if you wanted. I grew Oerprei last year for the first time and was impressed, I can give you a small cell tray of them but it'll probably be next week before I'm down. Jason's Jungle has a couple of good videos about Oerprei. They have the same growing period as garlic, so are harvested before the heat of the summer. I'll email you after I've had a look what's there.

I was just thinking about you guys, do either of you have a parent or grandparents born in an eu state (including Ireland), if yes it's possible you can get citizenship through them

Missys dad is Dutch, however to get Dutch citizenship we'd have to live there, plus home education is illegal there so don't think it helps, unless you know an option for her as half Dutch? And thanks for thinking of us 💚

Do not plant white cloves of garlic. Plant the purples cloves. The white garlic is bitter and not a good all around flavour for most of the foods weather is cooking, dressing or preserves. The strong is smell but the flavour is mehhhh. Just an opinion. Ofc you must feel free to do whatever you like. Greetings! Good luck with your appeal.
