For your information, the pension money that all the know nothings keep bleeting on about never went into Stuart Garners pocket, it went into the company to keep it going until the government of the day payed a promised developement grant which never arrived. The company had a tax bill outstanding which would have been covered after the receiving of the developement grant and payment yo suppliers. Stuart Garner did nothing different to numerous other budinessmen, people like Richard Branson who was taking cash to sell records that he never even had is just one example. The only difference being, Stuart Garner was pro BREXIT, And Tony Blairs friends, such as like of Branson, campaigned vigerously against BREXIT, and got payed handsomely for it, something that is all on public record if yoy eant to claim itbas a lie?.

I grew up around Norton motorcycles, their biggest mistake was in the 70’s they continued to make motorcycles who’s engines were designed in the 30’s and 40’s and didn’t make any smaller capacity bikes that would appeal to younger riders as well as those more experienced as did the Japanese companies. Norton FAILED to produce a large capacity multi cylinder motorcycle that would compete with the Honda CB750 that also had electric start and ran with little to no viberation. The BSA Triumph group managed to carry on after Norton had folded but by the mid 80’s to the early 90’s it had gone completely until John Bloor took it over and stationed it at Hinckley but the BSA Triumph group was guilty of exactly the same things as Norton and the AMC ( Associated motorcycles ) Group as really was the whole British Motorcycle Industry. Norton in my honest opinion made some serious errors of Judgment by not developing a multi cylinder modern engine , instead choosing to mess around with Wankel rotary engines which they wedged into a Yamaha FZR750 Chassis, for true Norton enthusiasts, Norton didn’t exactly cover itself in glory in that instance because those bikes weren’t Nortons in any way shape or form, and this brings us to the rotary engined Norton Commander - too bloody expensive ! And that carried on right up to present day because Norton haven’t made a motorcycle that a working class person could afford since the early to mid 70’s , even that 961 commando was too expensive for what it was, and it’s speed and power was only comparable with that of a Yamaha TDM 850 ! My brother had a brand new Norton Commando ( before that he had an Atlas ) and my uncle had a brand new Honda CB750 and when they stood them side by side the Honda was the better bike, even when the Triumph Trident is compared against the Honda CB750, the CB750 still comes out on top because the Trident as with the rest of the British Motorcycle Industry of that time was too little - too late. And from what you say here The Norton Motorcycle company have absolutely no intention of manufacturing a motorcycle that the general public can afford…….I’d love to ride a Norton, but it looks like I’ll be sticking with YAMAHA !

You miss the point totally. Norton has always been a premium brand. While a side by side comparison with a Jap bike might leave you thinking the Jap bike was somehow superior, the reality was very different. My friends all had big Jap bikes and I had no trouble outperforming them on the road. Maybe, if I got the idea in my head for a new guitar, or piano, I would have no trouble owning a Yamaha.

@@SavedbybGrace Any Thailand Triumphs I have seen here have fit and finish problems. The welds look like they were done by a high school welding class and the panels were wonky. Maybe you got a good one, but I wasn't offered a good one when I was looking. I have it in my mind I'd like to try an iron head Sportster, so I'm keeping my eyes peeled for one of those at the moment.

As soon as I saw the new Commando with carbon fibre mudguards and 1980s Suzuki indicators I knew they were going down the wrong road. It came 15 years too late in my opinion. There was a time when those with more money than sense were in abundance but those days are gone.

The only way to survive in the current market is to switch production fully to india, and put norton stickers on a generic indian bike. As likes of triumph, benelli, bmw, have gone. Or carry on making huge losses. Premium brands such as ducati are getting very nervous as more buyers go chinese / indian, small capacity. Small volume bike sales means shoddy products as little money for R&D and quality control.

I rode a new commando and actually really enjoyed it. But there is something about the Norton Brand that i wasn't comfortable with. So, I went for the Triumph Thruxton instead. I'll wait for the Norton to plummet in value a bit more, then I'll buy one. Thanks David.

Issue with the current iteration of the bike is that theyre too expensive and niche for what theyre selling. Move the main factory to somewhere cheaper and do small final touches in the UK factory and lower the prices of the bikes to sub 10k and you'll have a solid seller. Also another issue is no sales in the US.

Based on their losses, each bike comes at a cost to the company of circa £140000, and sold in the mid to high teens. They are i believe one of the best looking naked bikes, but can a large company continue to except those types of losses. I own two MV,s, and sadly i think its curtains for that company now. I hope Norton survives

Nicely researched and presented. I just wonder when TVS expect to see a payback/profit on their investment? Even forgetting the last couple of years' huge losses, they paid a huge chunk of change originally for the company. I hope Norton start producing some new models that do sell. There must be a limit to the time even rich owners can afford to fund a loss maker.

Revolution in Perth was a dealer in the Garner years, its a car shop selling Morgans ostensibly but are selling RE and CCM as well as Nortons. Norton will never be a success now, not in this country anyway, the scandals over the years have blunted any enthusiasm for the brand except for the Emperors new clothes clique and the hangers on of the committee of the NOC. I'm sad that Norton are ending this way, and that's from a Norton owner of almost 50 years. Nice well researched Video though.

When the 961 was originally announced, I was quite excited by the thought of owning one, despite the "exclusive" price tag. What put me off was learning of the very short-stroke engine, which, you may disagree, would remove it seemed much of the "character" of the old 89mm, the same stroke as it turned as my old MGB in the 1970s and '80s.

Of course TVS will produce the majority of all Norton motorcycles in India. They would be daft not to. They might maintain a design office in the UK and possibly some do assembly work on top-of-the-range models, but there is no way they can be profitable obeying UK rules and paying UK wages and taxes. In any case, if they stay in the UK they will be obliged to make a percentage of electric bikes and then phase-out all the internal combustion engine machines within ten years. They currently sell about three million scooters and small motorcycles per year across Asia and i suspect they are reasoning that a lot of those existing customers might be persuaded to move up to something larger, with the world famous ‘Norton’ name on it. This isn’t about the UK the focus is much further to the East.

BIkes in general (even moderate-sized) have become prohibitively expensive, the Norton range in particular, I'm afraid to say as a former owner of a '72 Commando in the 1990s. I could afford a 961 for example, lucky old me, but it would be a huge "indulgence" that could not be rationally justified. Extremely sad.

I live in the states and have been riding since the age of 9. I own a few older two strokes Yamaha and Suzuki’s street bikes from the 70’s. My around town short trip bike is an Indian made LML 150cc 2 stroke scooter 2005. Great scooter with a reed valve engine. The Indians understand how to make a quality product with styling at a price point, that won’t break your wallet. KTM is bankrupt because they focused on premium product over a price point product that would compete with Honda,Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki. Who dominate the market globally. They are the template by which to run a product range and pricing and the Balance sheet of a successful company. Royal Enfield is doing it successfully and they make a great bike for the money.

I was going to buy a 961sp in August when they had the 3.5k off deal running but I couldn’t commit to it due to other factors and that was the last month of that deal the following deal of 0% finance wasn’t in my opinion worth doing and I don’t think the bike is worth 17k so unless they do a better deal soon or reduce the price I will probably be buying the final edition thruxton within the next few months

Young people, as far as I can see, don't seem to have as much enthusiasm for motorcycles as us more mature people. Far too much BS to obtain a full licence these days. I would imagine that the Norton bikes are only bought by older riders that can afford the high prices. Also, the riding position on some of the models wouldn't be very comfortable for us geriatrics. I would still love to own one though!

I can’t believe the hoops people have to jump through to get into biking! My son took his test when he was 19, got an A2 licence. If he now wants to ride a bigger bike, he has to retake his test. Unbelievable! I have ridden my 961 all across Europe. I’m 55, it wasn’t the most comfortable riding position for sure, but I made it and I had an absolute blast. Doesn’t there need to be a profitable operating business before you hire an expensive profit siphon in the form of a CEO? ‘Back in the day’ every engineering works apprentice in my West of Scotland hometown rode a Norton (if they didn’t drive a Cortina) - most were cafe-racers, and their owner-modifiers actually hung out at cafes. Not many working class 17-22 year olds with that kind of money to splash out on a machine you probably won’t be able to find spares for in the next five years, and no more apprenticeships for lunch break machining. Oh well.

Right, Anders. The decline started, IMHO, with the introduction of the Commando, which was a splendid ride, but also a cover-up. The Commando's motor was the same old parallel twin. Underneath the isolastic suspension that 1930s design was still trying to shake itself to pieces. With the advent of the Commando Norton kept the wrong motor and dropped the right frame--the unmatched featherbed.

I wish them all the best for 2025 but I just don’t get it. It seems contradictory to say they are a premium non mass market brand and then presumably make some cheap arse bike to sell in Asia. In my opinion they have lost their way, the bikes are virtually the same as 10 years ago maybe better quality but who’s buying them, clearly not many folk. If you want a retro clunky old school Norton why not buy an old original one? The V4 skinner design doesn’t work against its competitors. The first thing they should do is return to their racing heritage then more riders like my self will hop back onboard. It seems at the moment there’s just a lot of high earning execs taking a piece of a non existent pie.

@ I genuinely want to see them succeed. We know Garner was a delusional crook and no businessman, but ten years ago there was a real buzz about the product and passion from Norton enthusiasts. The V4 (Aprilla all be it) silver Norton at the TT, the Commando looking good around its peers. Obviously it’s better Garner was ousted and should have done time in my opinion, but it needs someone with motorcycle passion and in particular the road racing side to take it forward not some bloke from Man U. It is bespoke-ish and ‘currently’ made in England but you can’t call it a premium product just by the asking price, it has to have a wow factor and more importantly the actual product needs to be the very best, and in my humble opinion that’s not currently the case

Here's how you sell more bikes you produce what you want and even produce replicas of old old motorcycles then you sell them not as new but as used Also more options from the factory like forget about front disc brakes some guys want those fancy looking drum brakes give them that as an option and don't forget to give kick start as an option

Norton as a name has suffered far too many reincarnations and false starts. They'll have to copy 'RE and Mahindra's BSA to be successful. The pursuit of "premium" buyers is a mirage, that's been the approach of all of the previous owners. There are few of these people around. Making overly complicated expensive bikes without a solid time proven reputation is to put it kindly, tricky. Most buyers don't want to pay out for a bike that is suddenly unsupported and they are left high and dry.

Motorcycle World in Northampton stopped being a Norton Dealer . They sold off the last bike which was used as for customer test rides for £10.495 . Customers were virtually fighting over it . The 961 is a fab bike to own . The only faults are the side stand needs needs a inch cut off it to make it safer on uneven ground ,and risers on the handlebars as it's a bit of a stretch on the sport or sp it's known these days . My Commando was a Donnington mk 2 in English White . I sold it to help pay my mortgage off .

They will never resurrect Norton motorcycles manufacturing them in the UK with Britain's 1st World overheads and having to deal with the cultural problem of a slothful lazy unco-operative working class and Britain's well known low productivity.

Yes agree, Germany has 25% of its staff off sick in the automotive manufacturing industry at any one time. A million people employed and talks of 10% layoffs to try and save the industry, and that's with German style work ethics. What must it be here in UK.

Rubbish. Bad management create bad staff. The British motorcycle industry vanished because of greedy short sighted management, churning out 1930's designs pushed beyond their original design limits on clapped out tooling. BSA was bled dry by the Dockers who retired to a tax haven. Slothful lazy management more interested in their latest company toys, not the workforce. I worked in industry most of my life. People worked hard for what they got. The management was noticeable by its absence and refusal to invest in new designs training and tooling.

Tired old theme. Absolutely nothing to do with Brexit. So just another Corbyn type bore...? If you read the figures on motorcycle sales all over the world, the large capacity models are slumping. 400s etc doing well. Triumph seem to be weathering the storm well. With production in UK, Thailand and India. Still a UK owned business, and of course popular in EU countries. So sort of makes your Brexit comment a bit lame.
