Thank you so much for including the part about Japanese products being seen as cheap at one point. A Back to The Future 3 scene that always bothered me was when Doc and Marty were fixing the Delorean and Doc said "No wonder this broke, it says this part was made in Japan" and Marty replied "What are you talking about Doc? Invest in new battery technologies, design new products etc. Sony is doing ok as far as mirrorless cameras but due to most people having cellphone cameras.. most would not spend $1200 on a camera. Hence that industry is suffering too. Look at what is happening with Nikon, as much as I love them, they need innovation too.

I remember Sony used to be an absolute juggernaut in the 90s and early 2000s. Their Sony Ericsson walkman phones, Sony walkman music players, Sony Bravia TVs, Sony DVD players, Sony Playstation consoles (PSP, PS1 and PS2) and even their Viao laptops used to be top notch. I don't use Apple products for their technology, I use Apple products for their well designed body, user interface, and operating systems. If you're not a graphic designer, I couldn't expect you to understand these things. ;) As long as Apple doesn't ruin their perfect OS, I will always buy Apple products. I have the iPhone 6s, and I just bought the 27" 5K iMac (all specs maxed out, aside from the storage. I prefer using an external hard drive.) Apple will do well for the longterm future because their customers love using Apple products. For many of us, it would take a LOT to push us away from Apple. I can't buy the latest but I will purchase one that will suit me.

I grew up in the 90s so the Sony walkman and Playstation 1 will always hold a special place in my heart. Damn they were a rage and how! Playstations are still kicking it though. The playstation 5 looks absolutely killer! Having said that, Sony is in dire need to innovate in the smartphone segment to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung. I’m pretty satisfied with the hardware they’re dishing out. Japanese products are durable, reliable and of high-quality. No doubts about that.

this misses most of the underlying reasons, which have been reported regularly here in japan over the years. not your fault of course, it was in japanese after all! for decades all japanese electronics companies focused on the 3 "sacred items" essential to every japanese household - the tv, fridge, and washing machine. that worked for a long time, until i think it was about the mid 2000's, when they all (sony included) dropped into the red and were sinking further and further into it. they consulted their learned university professors, who consulted their texts and reported back that electornics companies should build tvs, fridges, and washing machines, since those are the 3 "sacred items" that every japanese household needs. seriously, that happened. they've since continued on that track they were advised to follow, and they're still doing terribly. sharp is the currently doing the worst i think, receiving huge cash injections regularly from the government, followed by jvc, and even panasonic. the reason for this is that japan just doesn't get the concept of progress. everyone thinks japan is really high-tech but it's quite the opposite. almost nothing is invented here, what they do is study things others have invented, then do their own version but do it really well. just like the trinitron tvs in the piece, they didn't invent the projection system or any major parts, they just built everything very accurately. the underlying reason behind this lack of ability to move forward was covered in another news story i read more recently, on why so many japanese innovators have moved to silicon valley to start their own business, rather than getting jobs at the already established japanese giants. they said they went for jobs there but were all refused, told they "didn't understand how japanese electronics firms operate." this mindset begins in school, where the system still follows the 'learn from the master, and you too will be a master' mentality. every class in every subject is just taking notes while the teacher talks the entire time (just like every country was doing up until the 60's when it was phased out in favour of more effective and thoughtful styles), so kids never have to figure anything out. not only that but also if anyone does get any ideas, they are immediately referred to the textbook written by many learned university professors, where the correct answer is plainly written. what you end up with is a country of people unable to even contemplate doing just as they been doing up till now. it's such a shame that all that potential is either quashed or thrown away.
@strawberrymanga97 жыл бұрын
Yeah. As much I love Sony and Japan for all they're achievements their society is just... ugh! Not the worst by a long shot but still... No wonder the Japanese education system is brutal!
@emp0rizzle7 жыл бұрын
It's true. My father immigrated to the US in 1982 from Japan. He told me because Japan is a rigid society where only people who went to elite schools or come from elite families are successful. For example a woman who has a child is expected by society to give up her career and become a house wife. So you give young women in Japan 2 choices; have a career or have a child and guess what most of them choose? Career. So no babies. Now the demographics is all messed up because more people die than are being born. People like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates would have never made it in Japan and that's a bad thing! Japanese society doesn't value individuals.

We have a Sony Trinitron CRT TV which my parents bought in 1997 long before I was born. Since then till now it is running without any complaints. Over these 25 years we only needed to repair it thrice which collectively cost us 1200 INR (somewhere around $13) and that too because of our own carelessness. We still don't have any LED TVs and Sony has long stopped producing CRT TV and its components so if someday we need to replace any part, we simply can't. That would be the end of our 25 year old TV. A big part of my 17 years of existence.... Me and my brother have decided that when we buy a TV it would be of Sony.

@Real_MisterSir7 жыл бұрын
And let's not forget that Tesla are not just a manufacturer, they are an inventor, hence why most of their tech is open source. They aren't really in the game to compete, they are in it to actually establish a solid ground upon which the regular companies can get it going and compete with each other. Elon Musk is not in it for the money (at least that's not his main priority), so someone needs to outsmart them and surpass with an equally innovative mindset.

How can you only briefly mention Sony digital imaging? They make a majority of digital sensors on the market. Their sensors are in medium format cameras like Hasselblad, most Nikons, smartphones and all DJI products and cinema cameras too. That's gotta account for some serious revenue.
@ColdFusion7 жыл бұрын
+Croo ookie You would think so! But it's not the case. Sony has losing money most quaters for the past few years. Last year when they posted a full year of profit, it was mostly from the PlayStation.

where do you get that information? I don't mean the balance sheets or so on, I mean how do you know that the PS4 is what brought them to profits, etc? or what percentage of their profits come from each product/subsidary, etc.
@AMAStudios7 жыл бұрын
HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE? They make money from literally everything, iPhones and many other phones, Xbox Ones, Blu Ray Players, Nikon Cameras and several other camera sensors. etc etc And then they have the Playstation, Sony movies, Sony Music, etc.
@Fkhalfblood7 жыл бұрын
AMA they keep losing money cause they movie division isn't consistently profit, movies are hit and misses. their tv's are great but overpriced compared to competition. and the xperia sector has lost them a lot of $$$ in the past years, xperia brand is great but barely marketed. video game and camera sensors sector saved all their losses

@@MrWalker1000 welp, for the current market in mobile smartphone, SONY new smartphone for me little bit to expensive than others.. Than, a lot of competitors out there give a good spech, audio quality, visual, and camera with a reasonable price like pocophone.. new smartphone, XPERIA XZ3 price around 8++ USD with 4gb of ram and no headphone jack it's kinda expensive to me.. I really dissapointed to SONY.. Currently i use xperia z5 for almost 2 years and wanna upgrade to galaxy note 9.. But i hope SONY will rise and create a new phone that can gave a "reasonable" price to us..

Sony are perfectly fine!!!! They are investing in the future of technology. They are not interesting in competing in today's technology apart from the PlayStation and a mobile phone and a few tablets and TVs cameras Sony will always be the leader in technology from Japan. The Japanese government would never ever let them fold as a company. The PlayStation 4 alone makes them over 100 million in profit and that console was released in 2013 the new ps5 will make record sales Sony will be fine it's a brand of quality and everyone knows that but you have to pay the price to get it. I will always buy Sony products

@Wade that's because ps3 took 800 dollars to make and they sold them for 600 dollars, sony base ps4 they made a profit a small one but they made 18 dollars each for every ps4 sold instead of losing money.

@@Firebreather719 Playstation uses discounts from the major chipset producers like Intel, AMD and nvidia. It's not that they lost money. sorry to kick u out of ur dream, samsung and chinese brand r beating sony in tv years ago. so called sony tv is nothing compare to them in innovation/quality/price. home electronic is no longer sony specialty, chinese will eventually phase the korean and dominate both home electronic and smart phone in the next couple years. just as south korean phase out the japanese a decade back.

Jack lau idk buddy. I'm saying this from my own experience. My uncle bought one big Sony crt tv in early 2000s. Still running smoothly even after almost 17 years. One thing no one is mentioning is that Sony's Camera Sensor(XMOR) manufacturing site in Japan was destroyed due to the earthquake or tsunami or whatever it was... This disaster lead to Sony losing many of its profit and stopped manufacturing sensors for other companies the past 3 years... However, this issue was resolved in 2016(basically when Sony announced its Turnaround)... Now that Sony overcame this issue, they started to care more for the overall innovative product and All-By-Sony System, from new Sony Headphones(MDR and h.ear) that are getting a lot of credit in 2017, to the Sony A1 TVs, that is also getting a lot of acceptance with its innovative the-whole-screen-is-the-speaker.... Not to mention the XZP and XZ1, having innovative features(3D creator, and Super Slow Motion) as well as strong build and top notch specs(Snapdragon's latest, 4K Screens, HDR10)..... My guess is that Sony will bring something new to MWC 2018 because they are now in a good position to focus on manufacturing rather than focusing on cutting losses because of a natural disaster...
