Thank you so much for including the part about Japanese products being seen as cheap at one point. A Back to The Future 3 scene that always bothered me was when Doc and Marty were fixing the Delorean and Doc said "No wonder this broke, it says this part was made in Japan" and Marty replied "What are you talking about Doc? All the best stuff is made in Japan." I never understood this, but now I get it. THANK YOU!

The U.S. was flooded with cheap Japanese trinkets in the early '60's. Just like China before and now. By the late 60's Japanese craftmanship was starting to become apparent. I totally got that Back to The Future scene.

Not long ago, South Korean products were considered crap. Now Samsung and LG are making excellent stuff, and Hyundai cars have made vast improvements in quality. I'm willing to bet China will be the next in the line. 20 years from now we'll consider Chinese products to be of much higher quality.

It's been true of most countries at some point or another. Britain had exactly that reputation during the very early days of the industrial revolution, but only like a 50-100 years later it was America that had that reputation. Then it was Japan... Then china... This is a thing that shifts from country to country as they develop their industry. Seems to be a phase countries go through.

One commenter said that Windows ME was an awesome OS that he misses. You can see what the average computer literacy rate is like. I have no idea why the idea of Japan as some hyperfuturistic corner of the world still persists 20 years past its heyday. But you can tell when you visit Japan that some things feels really old. Not just Sony, the whole tech industry for the most part is stagnant. Apple, Nikon, Canon all need to step their games up. Invest in new battery technologies, design new products etc. Sony is doing ok as far as mirrorless cameras but due to most people having cellphone cameras.. most would not spend $1200 on a camera. Hence that industry is suffering too. Look at what is happening with Nikon, as much as I love them, they need innovation too.

I remember Sony used to be an absolute juggernaut in the 90s and early 2000s. Their Sony Ericsson walkman phones, Sony walkman music players, Sony Bravia TVs, Sony DVD players, Sony Playstation consoles (PSP, PS1 and PS2) and even their Viao laptops used to be top notch. Some of the best quality stuff in the world. Somewhere down the line, they started becoming arrogant and as a result, stagnant. The most infamous example of this was the PS3 and the seemingly infinite amount of money they spent on the Cell processor.

+GG Apple led in the personal computer category back in the day. Not anymore, I agree, but they have always been innovative in terms of design and their operating system. I don't use Apple products for their technology, I use Apple products for their well designed body, user interface, and operating systems. If you're not a graphic designer, I couldn't expect you to understand these things. ;) As long as Apple doesn't ruin their perfect OS, I will always buy Apple products. I have the iPhone 6s, and I just bought the 27" 5K iMac (all specs maxed out, aside from the storage. I prefer using an external hard drive.) Apple will do well for the longterm future because their customers love using Apple products. For many of us, it would take a LOT to push us away from Apple. And it's not because we're "fans," but rather we prefer the Apple OS and ecosystem.

Sony also made the mistake in the mid-2000s of having far too many phones that were basically all the same just in different cases. Dozens of the bloody things. Apart from a few stand-out models, you didn't really see people with Sony phones. Also when they did invent things they tended to keep them so they only worked with Sony gear. That kind of lock-in didn't appeal and nobody wanted MemoryStick, particularly when USB sticks worked with all their devices.

Had great experiences with all those brands and prefer Bose when it comes to speakers, headphones and sound systems over Sony and DEFINITELY Apple/Beats and those shitty skull candy earphones. It's just that Samsung is riding a huge wave right now with their smartphones and tvs. I'd say Sony and Samsung are equal as far as quality goes. Apple is just an overrated hipster brand that is ridiculously overpriced

I lost it outside at work countless times and people didn't even touch it (probably because people hate Sony) I still have it and it works perfectly. I remember people talking about the keypad buttons breaking I never had a problem with that either. Went from Nokia to Sony haven't looked back. I don't like that Sony's newer phones aren't available via most mobile carriers. If I want to upgrade it looks like I will have to pay upfront. That has to hurt sales, no?

The playstation 5 looks absolutely killer! Having said that, Sony is in dire need to innovate in the smartphone segment to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung. I've tried Oculus and HTC. Both had ups and downs, but PSVR was laughably bad. It's jittery, uncomfortable, and annoying to play in. VR, or a form of VR, will eventually replace smart phones. Right now, it's just a really cool gimmick.

I had a Sony M2 for 3 years and a half, then decided to upgrade to Sony Xperia XZ1(using it for almost 3 years now). Sony M2 still working fine, while after 3 years, I'm not nearly tired of my XZ1, I just love it and it's as brand new. And for sure when I'm finally ready to switch my phone I will go again with Sony. They deserve to be supported, the price tag is totally fine - I know what I'm buying and I know it will work for as long as I want to use it. (unlike other brands giving warranty of 200 charges - sounds more like a warning :) )

this misses most of the underlying reasons, which have been reported regularly here in japan over the years. not your fault of course, it was in japanese after all! for decades all japanese electronics companies focused on the 3 "sacred items" essential to every japanese household - the tv, fridge, and washing machine. that worked for a long time, until i think it was about the mid 2000's, when they all (sony included) dropped into the red and were sinking further and further into it. they consulted their learned university professors, who consulted their texts and reported back that electornics companies should build tvs, fridges, and washing machines, since those are the 3 "sacred items" that every japanese household needs. seriously, that happened. they've since continued on that track they were advised to follow, and they're still doing terribly. sharp is the currently doing the worst i think, receiving huge cash injections regularly from the government, followed by jvc, and even panasonic. the reason for this is that japan just doesn't get the concept of progress. everyone thinks japan is really high-tech but it's quite the opposite. almost nothing is invented here, what they do is study things others have invented, then do their own version but do it really well. just like the trinitron tvs in the piece, they didn't invent the projection system or any major parts, they just built everything very accurately. the underlying reason behind this lack of ability to move forward was covered in another news story i read more recently, on why so many japanese innovators have moved to silicon valley to start their own business, rather than getting jobs at the already established japanese giants. they said they went for jobs there but were all refused, told they "didn't understand how japanese electronics firms operate." this mindset begins in school, where the system still follows the 'learn from the master, and you too will be a master' mentality. every class in every subject is just taking notes while the teacher talks the entire time (just like every country was doing up until the 60's when it was phased out in favour of more effective and thoughtful styles), so kids never have to figure anything out. not only that but also if anyone does get any ideas, they are immediately referred to the textbook written by many learned university professors, where the correct answer is plainly written. what you end up with is a country of people unable to even contemplate doing just as they been doing up till now. it's such a shame that all that potential is either quashed or thrown away.

It's true. My father immigrated to the US in 1982 from Japan. He told me because Japan is a rigid society where only people who went to elite schools or come from elite families are successful. For example a woman who has a child is expected by society to give up her career and become a house wife. So you give young women in Japan 2 choices; have a career or have a child and guess what most of them choose? Career. So no babies. Now the demographics is all messed up because more people die than are being born. People like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates would have never made it in Japan and that's a bad thing! Japanese society doesn't value individuals.

We have a Sony Trinitron CRT TV which my parents bought in 1997 long before I was born. Since then till now it is running without any complaints. Over these 25 years we only needed to repair it thrice which collectively cost us 1200 INR (somewhere around $13) and that too because of our own carelessness. We still don't have any LED TVs and Sony has long stopped producing CRT TV and its components so if someday we need to replace any part, we simply can't. That would be the end of our 25 year old TV. A big part of my 17 years of existence.... Me and my brother have decided that when we buy a TV it would be of Sony.

at this early stage, its to premature to say, that tesla is wining the ev competition yet. maybe 3-5 years later we can decide who is the big leader. just like ford or mercedez invent theri first car, but none of them near as good as toyota or renault-nissan in term of sales.

And let's not forget that Tesla are not just a manufacturer, they are an inventor, hence why most of their tech is open source. They aren't really in the game to compete, they are in it to actually establish a solid ground upon which the regular companies can get it going and compete with each other. Elon Musk is not in it for the money (at least that's not his main priority), so someone needs to outsmart them and surpass with an equally innovative mindset.

Sony Ericsson Camera Phones were the best. I remember when the k800i came out in 2006 with a xenon flash, that phone took some of the best photos in low light. LED Flash can't hold a candle to xenon and yes LED camera flashes have gotten, better but nothing beat xenon flash. I just wish more phone manufacture would include a xenon flash with modern smartphone, rather then just making phone thinner and removing ports. If sony phone division make a phone that has a xenon flash, reasonably thin and a good battery life, I'll buy it in an instant!

One thing no one is mentioning is that Sony's Camera Sensor(XMOR) manufacturing site in Japan was destroyed due to the earthquake or tsunami or whatever it was... This disaster lead to Sony losing many of its profit and stopped manufacturing sensors for other companies the past 3 years... However, this issue was resolved in 2016(basically when Sony announced its Turnaround)... Now that Sony overcame this issue, they started to care more for the overall innovative product and All-By-Sony System, from new Sony Headphones(MDR and h.ear) that are getting a lot of credit in 2017, to the Sony A1 TVs, that is also getting a lot of acceptance with its innovative the-whole-screen-is-the-speaker.... Not to mention the XZP and XZ1, having innovative features(3D creator, and Super Slow Motion) as well as strong build and top notch specs(Snapdragon's latest, 4K Screens, HDR10)..... My guess is that Sony will bring something new to MWC 2018 because they are now in a good position to focus on manufacturing rather than focusing on cutting losses because of a natural disaster...

Yeah i dont see a point in having a move business, just sell it honestly. They should stick to the living room like tv's, gaming consoles, and so on.
