@TallDarknGruesome Жыл бұрын
it could have been a good game if they had picked one of the two concepts they had and stuck to it. #1 - earth society has collapsed, humans have scattered to thousands of hard scrabble settlements on rocky worlds that are barely making it. (Rust in Space) #2 - Post Terran galactic social war, pick a side (smaller number of settled planets with multiple major hubs and satellites per world and solar system. Pirates and conflict between techno and religious cults keeps threatening to tip anything over back into open conflict) Also - the whole post game loop of finding alternate universes, is honestly the most interesting thing they did, it should have been a more fully explored facet of the main story. Personally I went into Starfield with an open mind and it seemed to work for me for around 25-30 hours. I am a massive space geek and the fact that I would go into any planet even if I had to use quick travel and only land onto a specific generated tile, made me want to play. I spend most of the time just exploring random planets and doing some side quests. But after, as I said, 25-30 hours the space magic fades because you get to the point that you start to encounter the same exact points of interest. Same loot, same enemies, same lookpicks, etc. So you don't fancy exploring anymore. And what's left? A very bad and boring main quest, some sides quests though are indeed good but having to quick travel every time breaks the immersion. And then there are the other problems that slowly are starting to frustrate you a lot. Practically no map and the fact that the game feels so old in its design (the camera angle in the conversations, the awful npcs, etc) are so annoying and after the space magic is lost you don't have something to grab on, maybe except for some interesting side quests. But sadly that alone is not enough.

"At first it's mind numbingly boring, then for a few hours it picks up and wow you'll never do everything this game has to offer, then a few more hours later you realize you've done everything this game has to offer and all the points of interest are copy paste. " 3. "Not looking forward to TES6 anymore" 4. "The Biggest Release isn't the Best ... but For many hours I felt as disappointed as I did when Andromeda released. I actually grew to like that game and might even say that game is more "fun."" 5. "It took me 173 hours to finish the main story and faction missions, and there’s still a lot of stuff I haven’t done. Not bad. I’ll most likely add more hours when they release the DLC and the mod tools. The beginning was so slow and the game only became interesting after I started doing side missions, then I kinda got addicted to the point where I was thinking about the game when I'm not playing." 6. "The main story missions and the major faction missions are really good but unfortunately after finishing them the entire universe just felt empty." The kicker is that the last 3 of those are positive reviews. Number 3 is evidently irrelevant to the point but hey, it was there. Now for the most recent: 1. "1) Story is weak and shallow and not very creative 2) Side quests are boring and linear. Mundane even. Like get a plate, walk next door, swap plate for a gem. Quest done. Yipee -- not." 2. "Outside of that however the missions quickly get very samey / easy. Head to planet X, go to the mine / tower / lab / barracks kill a few bad guys, get to the main bad guy, kill him, collect a load of ♥♥♥♥♥, hit L, select next mission, repeat until bored." 3. "I really regret having spent money on THIS. Where are the patches to fix all the big issues??? " 4. "Worst of all though is the exploration. There are essentially zero areas to explore except for less than a handful of story areas." 5. "I have to say thumbs down to this game even though it is remarkable nonetheless. It just doesn't do what it sets out to do and that is to give the player the feeling of this expansive galaxy that you can free roam and do whatever you like. Basically you can skip space travel all together! You can fast travel between planets. So why build a space craft?" 6. "kinda wank, felt kinda empty from the get-go, menus felt clunky, got bored when i had to go through 3 loading screens to just to fast travel to a new planet, the only thing this game achieved was making me want to play Fallout 4 instead." 7. "It's just boring" Sorry for the formatting but I'm not putting in more effort than this for something you should be doing yourself instead of sitting here and saying "no, that's untrue, you lie" to what looks to be pretty accurate assessment of the general opinion on the game. These are 13 reviews. One of them mentions technical issues. I had to look for the most representative part of them, but they're Steam reviews, you can just check this yourself if you feel I'm misleading here. The consensus I could drudge up, even with people that would recommend the game, is that it's empty, boring (outside of the main missions for some, side missions for others) and very slow to start. This is just what I found on the first page. Maybe the majority isn't like this. It doesn't matter. Most people don't spend hours looking through Steam reviews, they check the first page and move on. This is the face of the criticism levied at Starfield. You don't have to agree with it, but please stop living in denial.

It's honestly just nice to see. I've started telling friends of mine that Bethesda is a AA studio that makes games at a AAA budget. So many of their games that have budgets and development cycles that are comparable to their peers and they feel so budget in comparison. I feel like a lot of the problem at this point isn't Bethesda themselves, but Todd Howard. It feels like he got really full of himself after Skyrim came out and dominated gaming for the better part of a decade, and at that point he felt that he'd cracked game development and that future games just needed to be "Skyrim, but _____". Fallout 4 = Skyrim, but with guns and mutants. Starfield = Skyrim, but in space and with none of the thrill of exploration. Starfield shouldn't have taken eight years to make, and Bethesda needs to drop the Creation Engine. After this fiasco, I've resolved that if future Bethesda games run on CE then I'm just flat out not buying it. The more people keep buying their games and then sitting back to wait for modders to fix it since Bethesda won't, the more Bethesda will keep pulling stuff like this.

Being on foot is a pure gameplay design for enemy encounters and discovery and such. Let me spell it out. Bethesda did not want the players to vroom, vroom past all the enemies along with everything else and then tell the Internet that the game was too easy and boring and nothing to see. Now could vehicle combat be added or enemies armed with RPGs or level designed for slowing down vehicles or forcing players to get out for certain stretches and taylored enemy encounters be incorporated to their game? Yeah, ofc, but again it's Bethesda, it's their game, it's their winning formula and they pretty obviously do not want to deviate from that formula. Are people fatigued from that winning formula? Oh yeah, Bethesda seems to be too old, and out of touch, and all the original devs seem to be flush with MS buyout cash and too rich to give a shit about coming up with new game designs. Skyrim in space doesn't feel too accurate to describe Starfield, but Bethesda in space makes sense. I read someplace from another poster that Starfield feels in every way a vision that turned into a contractual obligation for those Bethesda devs after the buyout. I strongly suspect there is a lot of truth in that. Afterall Starborn is just Dragonborn in space and that feels so silly and lazy, you know when a Show or Movie franchise "jumps the shark"? Well we seen it now from Bethesda.

The name "Bruce Nesmith" ought to be familiar to anyone who's a fan of The Elder Scrolls and Bethesda. He was one of the few OG Bethesda boys lefts. He began his career there working on _Terminator: Future Shock_ and _Daggerfall._ He was senior designer of _Oblivion_ and lead designer of _Skyrim._ Even Julian LeFay, in his interview with Indigo Gaming, spoke very highly of Bruce and his programming skills. Unfortunately, the dumbing down of the gameplay/lore in _Skyrim_ is partially his fault. For example: He thought the complex religions of _Morrowind_ was too complicated for players, and opted for the Imperial pantheon in Skyrim instead of the old Nord pantheon and/or the ancient Nord totemic religion. He was mistaken. Part of what makes _Morrowind_ so alluring is its complexity (which offers built-in replayability). Another example: Bruce was the one responsible for implementing Skyrim's magic system.

Everything he tells you is 90% untrue and he convinces EVERYONE that the car coming out is the most incredible and amazing car ever built. He knows, of course, that the car is actually nothing special, and is in fact worse than any car that has come before. So what he does is all the worse, but how is it possible that he gets away with it every time? Because it works. If he did this in real life as a car salesman... the customers would sue him and he would never recover from it and never show his face again. EXACTLY THAT would happen. But on the Internet.... there he can stand on a stage and present himself like David Copperfield. And of course STARFIELD is dead. But that no longer interests Todd or anyone else at Bethesda. Because the car has sold as planned and exactly the profit they wanted to make has been achieved. That's ALL Bethesda has ever been about PROFIT. They are still laughing at every idiot who bought Starfield because they thought they were getting the ultimate SPACE ADVENTURE! PureDark then added Frame Generation as well the next day. Since then, other modders integrated DLSS 3 properly in the game's UI as well, so you don't have to open a debug menu to change settings, it's already in the graphics settings menu. The load screens matter because they shatter immersion. I will always attest that the best way to play their games is without using fast travel (or limiting it to wagons only in skyrim for example). Starfield is a game *about* fast traveling. You HAVE to fast travel. There is NO seamless world, there's just a ton of empty bubble instances that you *fast travel* to. There is no journey, it feels faker than the literal cartoon world of FO4 because its obviously a video game. No immersion left. This is my personal darkest timeline for a BGS game in that regard. The worst part is, that for me, some kind of animated load screen of your ship jumping through space, or even just being able to walk around in your ship while jumping or landing would have been enough to keep me invested and immersed.
@Kimkong2 Жыл бұрын

I think the biggest thing holding Bethesda back is their continued insistence on using the same game engine they've basically used since their start as a company. Yes, its been updated significantly, but at its core it's still a decades old engine and has severe limitations as a result. They need to follow CDPR's lead and swap to Unreal, or else create a brand new engine if they insist on keeping things proprietary.
@JustFun-ho6qy Жыл бұрын
Starfield without loading times and slightly prettier visuals would suck almost as much as it does in its current state. I think the game design here is just fundamentally flawed. The kinds of systems, quest lines and narratives Bethesda tends to make just aren't compatible with a canvas as wide as Starfield's. Just take npc schedules for example: in Skyrim and Fallout Npcs go to work. At night they go to sleep. If you want to you can use sich an opportunity to steal from them or murder them silently. In Starfield, every shopkeeper or quest giver is wide awake 24/7. Probably because every single planet in the game has its own bloody timer and you'd have to spend half your time waiting for someone to get up. It's like all the various hazards you come across on planets. They probably thought it was a cool idea at first. Later they realized it would have been more annoying than fun and reduced the negative effects to such a degree they might as well not be there in the first place. Filling a world as massive as Starfield with meaningful content just isn't really possible as of yet. Bethesda tried anyway and face planted in the process. A different engine wouldn't have made much of a difference.

Steam reviews aren't counted to the steam score if the reviewer refunds the game btw. I also read that reviews under a certain time spent in the game are also not counted, or counted less than if spent past a certain amount of time, but I'm not sure about that time. But with the refunds, they aren't counted. Even if you can see a review of someone who has refunded, it isn't counted into the overall steam score of a game. So the people who rated the game that score is the people who payed 60 to 100$. Make excuse all you want for the game, but that is the score that people who played the game on steam gave it overall.

The companions in fallout new Vegas are vastly more interesting even down to some of the ways they are recruited. There's way better exploration in New Vegas. I would put up with bethesda jank if the role playing is there. To me they are role playing games that happen to have combat. Why you play is for the immersion. Essentially my dumb downed review: Fun Game, Does have some issues and can be boring at times. 8/10 game. It’s time to Old Yeller the creation engine, though. It just can’t keep up anymore.

The default ship is pretty crappy in my experience. At certain points it became a bother using it since space combat is just a stat check with no real way to outplay or outrun enemies. Went straight for shipbreaker and everything became a cakewalk. Once i leveled up piloting to actually use it.

This game was made to play for a long time. There are many skills you can acquire that makes the game more efficient and enjoyable. Too many are hating the game because you have to work for it rather than it just being given to you. Never was a Bethesda fan at all but this game is actually really enjoyable.

You need to know some things about the modding community. Just because we sometimes fix things in a day does not mean it is easy. Many of us have over 20 years of experience with roots in AAA development. Try to find any AAA studio where the majority of devs are like that; they are mostly filled with juniors and interns.
@scubasteve3032 Жыл бұрын
I had suspected as much. Sounds like that is exactly what is going on at Bethesda.

Modders also get to work on the aspects that interest/motivate them most, and don't have to burn themselves out on work they dislike, or spread themselves thin across a dozen of the game's different systems.
@Gfp1995 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, however it's still pretty telling that a modder can fix a game in the amout of time it takes the studio to make a statement of apology about a broken game
@NataliePine Жыл бұрын
Plus it's perfectly acceptable for a modder to push out a mod that "works on my machine - YMMV". Maybe 90% of users have a great experience, but there might be people in the Nexus comments page saying things like "this broke my save" and that's just the way the cookie crumbles. Whereas before BGS can add the same feature, they have to test and fix (most of) the bugs and re-test etc because if *their* new version breaks saves or whatever then that's going to be all over the gaming media.
@TheCephalus Жыл бұрын
@@NataliePine yes, QA takes a lot of time. Especially for consoles as there is a "quality standard" you have to meet. Modders do not have to bother about that.

To be fair with Bethesda, Star Citizen devs said that the implementation of upscalers like DLSS/FSR can broke their UI system and screen terminals (open development folks), so thats an issue they would need to solve before implementing those techs. MAYYYYBE Bethesda has some similar issues.
@HickoryDickory86 Жыл бұрын
Shouldn't be a problem if the UIs/HUDs (which are 2D) were being rendered separately from the gameworld (which is 3D). Post-processing effects and upscalers could be applied to the 3D renderer only, leaving 2D UI/HUD unaffected.
@Mythicalgoon Жыл бұрын
What? star citizen is unreleased, they were just stating some issues they were having... that in no way validates bethesda for releasing a game without dlss when other smaller studios have released games with. Again, star citizen is in ACTIVE DEVELOPMENT, starfield is released

9:50 "Its not trying to be super realistic" - Actually Starfield is going for full hard sci-fi , with the sole exception being the Main Quest and its Starborn stuff which has a more softer take. But yeah if you ignore the Main Quest and go out and do everything else , you will realise that Starfield manages to stay within hard sci-fi limits very consistently. "Rovers or other Vehicles" - Funny i was on this one Quest from Lizzy and i had to get something from a derelict Legacy Deimos Ship , and that derelict Legacy Deimos Ship has a Vehicle Cargo Bay with dual ramps for Vehicles. You cant lower the ramps which makes sense in space , so its not animated and most vehicles you can find are also non-animated static objects. But since the Statics already exist , they just need to create new animations and a drive mechanic and ship modules ... so in Bethesdas speed this would take them only 6 years xD 24:00 "Hasnt anyone modded vehicles into Starfield yet" - No but you can use "The Frontier" Mod and drive cars or control mechs (with a different mod i forgot the name of) in Fallout New Vegas or Tale of Two Wastelands ... so engine restraints / limitations is just an excuse , this engine can do much more than people give it credit for. The devs at Bethesda just prioritize something else and dont put in the effort into the mechanics the players want , for whatever reason. "Gimme Space Horse" - Skyrims mount mechanic combined with the Xenosociology or Robotics Perk or a Starborn Power to let you ride tamed Alien Creatures or Hacked Robot Dogs , or let us buy them and add a Zoo (The Collector / Scavanger has a Zoo) and / or a Robotics Bay to the Ship Modules ... cuz Vasco at the beginning of the game says he stays in the Robotics Bay ... what Robotics Bay dude ? "Cinematic Camera" - I think Skyrim did it best by simply not forcing a specific Cinematic Camera view and just letting the scene play out while your there. Like remember the first time you reached Riverwood with Ralof or Hadvar and NPCs just talked with you and each other without forcing your face directly into theirs ? FO4 with the camera switching back and forth was terrible for immersion if you want to be in permanent 1st person view. Camera directing towards the player also dosnt make much sense if your Character isnt even voiced in the first place. The Cinematic Camera in Starfield is just forced to show off the facial lighting and the new fancy facial animations ... or to distract from the fact that NPCs barely have any Idle animations (also no day n night cycle) . So yeah just give the NPCs actual Idle animations and go back to how it was in Skyrim.

If Todd is about "How do we make X fun?", then how did the vendor credit cap and lack of maps in cities make it to release? Who thought melee weapons were balanced? What is up with all the companions having the same moral compass? And so on. As far as the travel time between points of interest, I personally don't think the problem lies with that time. It typically isn't that bad. The problem for me is more what the point of interest is. Ooh, it's a domed crater, with either a mineral pile or a dung pile containing nothing I want. It's some ecosystem thing, with one or two points for me to scan. It's one of the bases I've run a dozen times before, that I can find all over the place. The destination lacking value is why exploration is lackluster. There is no "WoW!" there, no "Here's an item with an effect that can only be gotten by exploring these PoI." So what's the point? Why bother? Especially if you intend to go NG+, and all of it will be wiped away anyway? I do think the gunplay in Starfield is kind of lackluster. I mean, it is adequate. But when I have played a lot of Warframe, well, that's what I'm going to compare it against, and it falls way short. And when a game has 8 years of development time, and they definitely can check out what can be done, well, they shouldn't allow their own gun play to be so inferior. The load screens thing... I think if you have a modern drive, it isn't a huge deal. Sure, seamless is way better, especially when you're loading into something like a small shop. But the load screens are fast. With a slower drive, then, yeah, it will definitely feel a lot worse. But as far as the future goes, more people will have those faster drives. Overall, for me, loading screens are on the lower end of the "problems Starfield has" list, though I can definitely see it rating much higher for people with slower drives.

Hype can be fun. It gives you something to look forward to, something to be excited about. I was super hyped for Starfield, I could have taken a chill pill, or been more skeptical but why? Hype is fun. I did, however, remain open to being wrong so when it wasn't as great as I hoped, I shrugged and moved on. Nothing wrong with being hyped and excited, just temper it.

Hyping games these days is a waste of time
@ibysdagon4659 Жыл бұрын
Problem is when 200,000 people get super hyped and pre order the game, the studio doesn't really need to even finish it. They get their money and they will also probably move on. Plus on the consumer side, getting overhyped can torpedo the games chances of getting q fair shake. Like look at Watchdogs, Cyberpunk, No Man's Sky, or 79. Not saying they where all good or that the marketing for all of that was honest, but peoples expectations went to hatred real quick.

Daggerfall: jank game with great story Morrowind: jank launch that turned into a great game with an amazing story Oblivion: amazing game that was quite possibly the buggiest major launch of its generation. Skyrim: great world, solid mechanics, as many funny bugs as bad ones, Story was kind of meh, but massively uplifted by the world and art. FO3: buggy, but other than the subways was an amazing game. FONV: was made by obsidian :) FO4: good shooter, great world, side stories are better than the core story and act three feels like it was written as a "oh shit this paper is due in the morning" type assignment. FO76: Crappy cash grab with outright lies for marketing. has taken over 4 years to turn into a slightly playable game, and lost the majority of the Bethesda fans on its way. Starfield: Makes my RTX3080 run at max fan speed to render 16 shades of taupe in a tiny room. Todd Howard needs to join Bobby Kotic in taking his Microsoft money and f'ing off into the sunset.

For vehicles, they could do 2 things. 1. Jet pack, a sustainable thrust that keeps you five feet in the air, being able to traverse in any direction. 2. Animal mounts like in Jedi Survivor. There should be space exploration. Anomalies in space and Black Holes. You spend countless hours upgrading and creating your ship for that once in a while dog fight that lasts between 30 to 90 seconds. You don't even need a ship, you can literally fast travel from one planet to another by fast travel. No sentient alien species. That's just a lack of imagination from the writers. The map is atrocious. There is no way to figure out what direction to go to. Here's an idea, when in orbit, your ship can launch a satellite that can map the area so you can get a map of the area.

People conflate stuff like "Fallout 4 was better than Starfield" to Fallout 4 was actually really good. That is such a dumb mentality sometimes. Because the most recent game lowered the bar so much, the game that was considered bad to many people, those people now consider it good. The game in itself wasn't good, but because Starfield was so bad to them, now Fallout 4 is good by comparison and therefore considered good. This is how things are nowadays. A bad game isn't good now because the game that comes after it is worse...
