I have numerous Confederate ancestors and can hopefully answer your question about the confederate pensions. The documentation of the Confederacy was more condensed. After the war, wives of confederate veterans were entitled to pensions and filled out a “Registration for a Pension by a Widow of a Soldier, Sailor, or Marine.” The document was only one page, and detailed the veteran’s injuries (my gggg grandfather lost sight in his eye) and the company, pay, and other service info. There was also information provided from living people from the same company as the deceased veteran :)

Unfortunately Confederate records are much more scarce - I have only one Confederate veteran, but he died during the war and I haven't been able to find any record of him serving or dying! It is a huge brick wall for me.
