As a UK mainly Northern collector I enjoyed watching that. Took me back to more innocent days when we were just getting into rare soul in late 60's. In fact it wasn't even referred to as "NS" back then. You did ask for feedback so here goes and don't take any of this as a criticism. Hopefully filling in a few blanks for you. You have got in there what I'd class as NS but quite a few aren't really such as Grassroots and Beau Brummels. Some are the right artists but perhaps not the right tracks. For instance Robert Knight's biggie years back was "Love on a mountain top" or Fred Hughes was "Baby boy" also on Brunswick. Incredibles are mostly known for "There's nothing else to say" on Audio Arts too. Their album well worth picking up if you see it. A lot of what I'd call NS in there is from the very early years though you might still hear them today in a Northern "oldies" spot. I guess a brief explanation might help. Simply put the NS scene developed from the mod scene which was waning around '68 and the rise of the skinhead scene [ don't believe skinheads were mostly racist - it's rubbish put about by disgruntled middle class hippies !] around the same time. Mod clubs were mainly based on R&B, soul with an emphasis on Motown and reggae but times changed and a lot of UK clubs turned toward the hippie flower-power psychedelic type thing. Also mods were settling down and maybe changed their lifestyle. However some die-hards resisted the change and continued to want to listen to music based on that mid-60's Motown beat. Obviously if all you got was the same records you'd heard a thousand times [for instance "I can't help myself" or "Going to a Go-Go"] it would soon be stale so some fans and dj's began to dig for older 45s with the same feel that had been released in the UK but gone unnoticed. As a rule UK radio was poor for airing soul artists. There was only one pop station that didn't start till '67. Nothing like the USA with myriad R&B stations. This is where your collection comes in. Artistics, Newbeats [I know very poppy but a huge sound back in '69 /'70], Mitch Ryder, Jerry-O, Elgins, Gladys Knight, Jay & Techniques, Shades of Blue, Jackie Ross, Stevie Wonder were all early plays turned up on the UK release. From then on things just snowballed and more and more obscure records were unearthed with US labels providing the majority. Ric-Tic was a label very early on I became aware of as there were places you could find US imports. Hope that fills in some blanks. Finally for today I'd rate the Soul Bandits as being pretty representative of NS though there are various factions that come under NS scene umbrella encompassing a Motownesque Toni Lamarr to the more R&B Etta James [popular nowadays]. Your Edwin Starr on Ric-Tic is hard to find. Withdrawn I believe as "OO-Soul" and retitled "Double O-Soul". £50 in nice nick maybe ? Good luck in your future search. And don't call it "crate-digging". That's for hipsters who are even worse than hippies !

hi mike, another incredible collection of 45s in the northern soul style! some of these i have seen and a lot are new to me but look and sound really good from your descriptions of them. motown and its affiliate labels did put out some really nice soul b sides on their records and its really fun to discover them. these 45s looked to be in pretty decent condition to, always a joy to look at all these 45s in your collection, thanks for sharing, take care, rob

Mike. Is there a book with listing of northern soul. I have a lot of 45’s and recognize some of The artists you showed. Not a big 45 collector but would be nice to know what to look for
@MikeFindsThings2 жыл бұрын
Best thing to do is research online. There's a bunch of different northern soul rarities and very few know most of them. Many were pressed in small numbers by minor labels. There's even rarities pressed by major labels that were songs or artists that never went anywhere.

Have to be careful with stickers on labels. I was buying 45’s at a thrift store. They were very valuable. The price were on stickers on the labels. The salesperson started to remove one and basically destroyed The label. I told her if she did the rest of them that way I wouldn’t buy any. We are talking promo 45’’ of Bill Haley and the Everly Brothers etc.

Lick and stick number labels usually come off with water and a finger. The ones with actual glue often can be removed with lighter fluid and a sharp blade. The more careful and patient you are, the better the results.

Interesting records, albeit not all of them rare. "I Got a Feeling" isn't a stomper, but more of a dancer, BTW.

I pretty much said that it was mostly common ones with some rarities mixed in. The great thing about northern soul is there's plenty of great records that most folks can afford that aren't hard to find. It's always a thrill to find the rare ones though.
