@@steve_heise so you'd recommend I not get the d100 because the mode dials will malfunction indefinitely over time or get the d200? Because I want that film grain noise pattern that looks film like! If not the d100, which of the others (d50-90) gives reliable performance and film grain noise pattern filmic looks?

The D50 is what lit my candle, too. I didn't know anything about CCD vs CMOS. I took it on vacation with a 50mm 1.8 D lens, and I was blown away by the images. I ran out and bought another one right away. When I discovered the CCD angle, I ran out and got the D100, and so on. To this day, if you asked me what camera surprised me the most. The D50. It's built like a tank. The battery lasts, It has an AF motor and beefy grip. It's even somewhat weatherproof. I used it in high humidity, and the seals held up. My Nikon DLSR'S in the stable👇 I like them all and wouldn't part with any of them. D50x2 CCD D100x2 CCD D200 CCD D3000 CCD D3100 CMOS D5000 CMOS D5300 CMOS 24 mp I use them mostly with: 35mm 1.8 DX G prime 50mm 1.8 DX G prime 85mm 1.8 DX G prime 50mm AI AF 1.8 D x2 They're all great. The D3100 is smaller, easy to carry and has an easy menu to navigate. It's lightweight and the smallest of my bodies. I don't use a neck strap so walking around with it in my hand feels comfortable. The D3100 camera also gets my attention for bang for the buck because of its picture quality and size. The D5300 24 MP is my daily driver. It's strength is sharp images, and at 24mp, it's handy if you plan on making large prints. I have a special place for my D50. That's always going to be my ATF but the D200 is worthy of that distinction. Give these cameras light they will perform. The "D" to me means daylight. That's where these cameras deliver. Great video. I have respect and admired your work. Great pictures.

can I get film like images with the d50? I see it online for a total of $71 on mpb. And was thinking of getting a 50 1.8 ai-s lens to go with it. Lmk whatcha think? My Nikon journey went from D70s to D300 to D700 to Z fc. And recently back to D200 due to its bigger CCD sensor compared to the D70s. All still work flawlessly, and as a Nikonista I wouldn't switch to any other brand.

growing up my first "real" Camera was the D100 and i took some of my most favorite photos with that thing and learned so much from it. I also had a d90 that was huge leap forward and helped me learn even more about photography. then i moved to the D700 (Which i highly recommend you pick up) and that gave me the opportunity to see what full frame was about and let me shoot in low light. I now shoot on my D800E for most of my paid work which is also a fantastic deal of a camera and it's highly underrated. I found a D200 not long ago for like 120 bucks like new with like 2k shutter actuation's on it. I've been doing a lot of macro work with it and it is just fantastic. I can't get enough of it. I've never been disappointed by a Nikon DSLR.

I bought a D200 after watching your video, great camera with amazing colors! It cost me 80 euros and came with a DX 35mm 1.8 lens which alone cost that much, so the camera body was practically free! One benefit I found due to that hefty body is that the shutter is really well-damped, I can shoot as slow as 20th of a second and get usable photos.

Imo, for those out there looking to buy, I say one of the best budget cameras right now for dx is the d7000, has everything one could ever need and great image quality at very cheap price currently. For fx/full frame, I think you can’t beat the d610. It’s current price is unbelievable and the camera is perfect for a casual shooter, great build quality, smaller frame than the 800, has all the features one could need, great picture quality and the price is right!

I love my D200. I can't think of anything I can say about it other than just "wow, they nailed it". I, too, have owned an insane number of cameras (and currently still own quite a few) but there is just something about the D200 that makes it special. As you pointed out, it's just as much about the build and the ergonomics as it is about the image quality. I still have it in regular rotation as either a primary or a backup camera.

I’d a D5100 when it came out. Then I bought a D600 and went onto the FF world. I shouldn’t have. DX lenses give me affordable VR lenses, which I can’t afford with the MILCs. So recently I went on a DX buying spree and bought a D5000, D3300 and D40. I am not finished buying yet. I want a D7100 and maybe a D300. These used cameras and VR lenses are so pristine and cheap. Excellent video & thank you for sharing . The reason why the 6 mega pixel single layer CCD sensor looks so much like film is because the sensor has silver oxide properties , back in the day these cameras was specifically designed to replicate film cameras , the silver oxide grain from the ccd sensor is very similar to 35mm film grain , hence the silver oxide , though of course it's clearly not film , nevertheless it's a good substitute for the ever increasing cost of film , particularly for photography students & beginners . Due to the late digi filmic camera trends , I suspect this cheap £33.00 camera will rocket up in price as they start to get thinner on the ground , it's just a matter of time , same goes for the Nikon D70 , D100 & D 200 , for someone who's young & if they have the storage space it's a golden opportunity for a huge future investment , the thing is these cameras have a shutter life , sadly they won't last forever , I imagine in ten years from now these cameras could be like gold dust , especially the D200 , can you imagine the future Nikon D 200 costing £500.00 ? , I wouldn't be at all surprised . I have most of the Nikon DSLR range , from the D50 to the D800 & most in between , my daily go to camera for local Brighton photography is without doubt the Nikon D50 , that's Brighton East Sussex England . There's a lot of news on how the Fiji is close to film , their nowhere near as close as the above Nikon cameras & the Fuji Camera price too !! . So here's to these amazing vintage Nikon cameras , and long may they live .

My first serious camera was a hand me down Nikon N2020 from my Dad in 1988 which i still own today, since then i worked my way up the Nikon line from point and shoots to the bridge cameras and the P series, P90 P100 P500. My first DSLR was the D70 about 12 years after its release. in 2019 I bought a Red D3100 and just recently, like you i went back and bought all the models i couldn't afford when they were released . The first one i got was the D80 and then watched and watch until i finally was able to pick up a D60 Gold Edition, i remember the day it was released. Nikon placed ads on every bus in my city everywhere i went i saw it and said one day i will own that, and now i do with just over 900 actuations on the shutter. my most recent is the D40x which i haven't actually taken out to play with yet as i am still infatuated with my D60. I dont know what it is about these DSLR DX crop sensor cameras that captivates me. i enjoyed the simplicity of an SLR and having had many digital cameras over the years i have learned to appreciate these older DSLR cameras for the complicated simplicity of them. I have played with some newer FX full frame cameras and they are not much more advanced than the DX crop sensor but they just dont hold my interest like these old beauties do...

just bought a nearly new D5000 (9000 clicks) for just 75 euro. In 2004 I bought my D70 kit for 1500 euro. Still have it next to my S70 (film). Stopped taking pictures with the D70 in 2010 (the zoom on the 18-70 kit lens got stuck), from 2010 until I now used stupid things like photos from camcorders etc. The only somewhat better choice was to use a Coolpix 5000 (outdoor point and shoot) and maybe starting to use iPhones 3 years ago (have the 13 pro max now). I want to get back into the D-SLR stuff without the costs. I like the tiny form factor of the D5000 as I intend to use it on my bicycle tours through Europe. Hey it even got me researching what the problem was with the stuck zoom on the 18-70 lens. I managed to de stuck it (a loose tiny screw on the inside). The pictures I can take with it with the D5000 are great. Indoor photos from the dogs are great (using my over 30 year old SB-600 external flash indirectly bouncing to the ceiling). I am interested in adding a used D750 full frame as I still have a 28-200 Tamron lens (without AF motor) as that is a bit to big for the D5000 (bought it with the S70 together with a F1.2 50 mm lens - can not find it for the moment). The D750 I will use for picture taking day trips (bit to bulky for 4-week camping tours on my bicycle). Great video btw...

I find myself using the Nikon 35mm f1.8 the most with the D200. It's affordable and it looks great.

Great I had two D7000's when I changed to MFT I let them go the second had just 5 shots boxed as new should have kept that one. I come from film background back in the 1960s when I joined the Merchant Navy in UK and on the way to join a ship, turned out to be P&O's ss Canberra in 1965, I had no camera, family had a box types from memory with 4x4cm and 6x6cm, I found on the train a metal body (the most expensive) Kodak Instamatic camera and that started a young ex college lad into photography. I started properly when I was a Skipper on the River Thames in Windsor and a young Mate on one of the boats parents had a B&B and an American couple had left a Canon FT QL with a 50mm F1.8 (I think) and bought it almost new for £50GBP I was earning £12GBP a 7-Day week in the season and had to replace the money so I started taking photos of the passengers and selling them post paid for 2 shillings and 6 pence old money, today at that time, would be 12.5GB Pence... in colour... From that I started getting different cameras and branched out to anyone wanting photo work teaching myself as I went - I rose through 1949 Leica IIIF RD DA with Russian Zorki lenses (Leica were even then out of my bracket) rising all the time until I could get a Hasselblad 500c with 80mm Planar and renting the first 40mm F4 Distagon for jobs... children came and so the Hassel went and in it's place my all time favourite Rolleiflex 2.8F Planar a dream in itself to use... I also managed to get a Mamiya Press Super 23 with various lenses - that, with the Tilt Back is unreal, should have kept it but sold it to a student at University taking a Photography Degree I believe in Ireland... 6xcm7 6x6cm & I believe 8.9cm backs on 120-220 film stock - literally very old fashioned to use but quality unreal. Time passed and the 35mm market opened with Olympus coming out with the OM System - I only recently sold the OM1 body in mint condition... then I started on the Nikon Digitals needing help from friends to work out the complexity of having everything on board D50 D90 then the D7000.... story to date now Panasonic Lumix GH4R - love that and I have a backup GH4R with just 7 or 8 shots boxed as new along with the Lumix GX8 and amazing almost Leica shaped body (how about a Review on that one?) and I also have the Lumix G9 - excellent camera but I hunger again for the 6x6cm Hassel or Rollei... it's not going to happen but the delight in waiting to develop those films and, and, and... sorry to have waffled on - check out the GX8 and the G9... is it time to look to a Full Frame Digital Future with all the Digital issues of Saving and what will open it in the future!!! Same applies to my Studio (Music) Recording work on Tape - now Digitised some won't easily open from the 1980's when the first Digital Adats appeared... I should have backed up multiple times when selling my Analogue gear. All the best - thanks for posting and have subscribed - if you're on Twitter check us out happy to ReTweet your vids for you Michael Tweet /OAK77uk

You should contact Cobalt Image they have these camera profiles to match any camera. I think they have one for the Nikon D200. They will give them to you for free in exchange that you make a video.

Steven does great videos but a warning to all: watching them will cost you money unless you’re very disciplined. I own a D200 mostly because of his D200 video. That and the fact that the D200 can meter with manual focus lenses and I still have a few.

For me, Nikon's ridiculous refusal to put focus motors in the D5*** and D3*** bodies is a deal breaker. No other brand does it and it cuts off a huge chunk of available legacy AF lenses. I just picked up a Pentax K5 + kit lens for $110, a bargain!

@@hrpickinstuff That doesn't change the fact that stopping your customers using a huge number of AF capable lenses, which fit the very same F mount, is a dumb idea. No other manufacturer opted to build camera bodies without in-body AF motors.

@@QuicknStraight Well it's not dumb from the point of view of the company. If you bought a cheap camera then they need to get some money from you by forcing you to buy some new lenses instead of some film-era bargains.

there is a pattern in APS-C Nikon cameras that keeps repeating itself over and over, and when you see it you realise how pointless the very entry level cameras are. You know those that don't have the internal focus motor, that don't have the AI ring, locking themselves out of the best bang for buck lenses in the Nikon F mount... that pattern is that Nikon hates waste. When they have a deal with a company to make them a sensor, they want to milk that deal to the fullest extent, to the point that it's not even worth doing it anymore, but they still do that shit. So what they do is they make a sensor design or pay a company to do one for them. Like a top tier sensor for when the camera's due to be released. Then, once that sensor is not top tier anymore, they move it to the next lower price bracket for the next gen while they get a deal for a new sensor to put in the higher cost one. First sensor to fall in that grid is the 6MP CCD. It was first introduced in the "semi-pro" D100 camera in 2002. Then, when the new sensor came in, it was put in the mid range D50 in 2005, then the D70 and D70S the year after, and the year after that. Once it wasn't good enough for the mid range anymore, it was put in the very much entry level D40 in 2006 Second sensor is the 10MP CCD, which was introduced in 2005 in the pro D200, then was trickled down to the mid range D80 in 2006, then the entry level-ish D40X (later rebadged D60). even was put in the D3000 Third sensor was the 12MP CMOS, introduced in the D300 in 2007. It was later put in the mid range D90, then the more entry level D5000 and more entry level still D3100 Nikon has a habit of recycling their sensors. That means that nowadays, if you can get a D60 for 50 bucks and get that on paper good 10MP CCD sensor, well guess what you can get a D200, which is obviously older, but has the same sensor and a LOT more features (also faster with better specs like shooting speed and autofocus) for about the same amount of money. And considering how detrimental the lack of feature is for Nikon camears (lack of focus motor in the very entry level, lack of AI ring for anything below the semi-pro level, locking those cameras out of either AF-D lenses, or AI/AI-S lenses, or both), I don't think it's really worth it to really dwelve on entry level bodies. Do your research, see what you actually need, and get the cheapest camera that fit your criteria with the sensor that you want
