This video is so clearly explained. My district has been trying to move forward with this for a few years, but they have failed to really explain or roll it out in a way that makes sense, so many teachers are pushing back on it. I've started using this type of language in my class and the students are responding well. Of course, they are still of the mindset that if it's not a grade, then why bother - so, I am instilling them that while it's not for a 'grade', it is for learning. Thank you for outlining your philosophy in a way that is easy to understand. I will share this video with some of my coworkers.

Thank you so much for your comment. It definitely takes time to move from a grade-centered mindset, but it sounds like you are well on your way! Please do not hesitate to reach out if you or your colleagues need support on this journey.

Hello! Your videos have been really helpful as I try to get more organized after COVID teaching. I am thinking of using a paper planner this year - it's so helpful for me to write down a plan. I noticed your planner in the video. Can you tell me what kind you have found helpful?

Hi Michelle! Thank you so much for watching and sharing that you find my videos helpful! It's so funny you are asking me about my planner - I just went to pick out another one today actually! You gave me some inspiration for my video topic this week. I will post all about my planner, so stay tuned!

I grade HW and give extra credit. Work Habits are an important part of grades IMHO. I give full credit for HW that is complete (whether is it right/wrong). Yes, a student could copy, but even taking the time to copy answers is at least doing the work. I provide extra credit assignments to give students who struggle with traditional tests, opportunities to showe their understanding in different ways.

When homework doesn’t count, very little homework is done. There’s a reason why homework was always graded and counted in the past. I always had 2 grading schemes: one where it counted for some small amount and one where it was worth zero, I took the maximum of the 2 scores. Kids who were brilliant and lazy were rewarded. Kids who needed the homework score were also rewarded.
