I am surprised you don't carry a 9pin serial to usb cable in case you need to make any settings changes on a router, or pull logs. I use a Mac with Windows and Linux in VM's myself.

If you are configuring Cisco or any network equipment using the serial console, this is necessary.

I don't think they really configure network devices with console ports.

I as a sysadmin got nearly the same stuff in my bag (Lenovo T580), but I also got one usb to serial, at least two usb drives, a hard disk, an rj45 coupler and a screwdriver kit in my bag

His work is pretty Netowork. Most important thing about a bag flashlight... it doesn't turn on in your bag and run down.

Probably a 5-port smart-managed switch and a Ubiquiti U-Installer device (if you are working with Ubiquiti wireless devices).

Might I suggest a Fluke (now NetScout) LinkSprinter as well. They are great layer 3+ diag devices.
@matthewchilds3208
@matthewchilds3208 4 жыл бұрын
Second that. The LinkSprinter is the best compact tester I use. Can be powered with PoE, tests PoE, tests cable runs, tells you switch, port, and vlan that you are connected to. Super convenient to always carry with me.

I like to carry a cat6a coupler and a 6” crossover cable too. Can lengthen a cable or make a long crossover.

That USB NIC works in pfSense if you need an emergency NIC. Best to clamp it to a rack for a heat sink. Almost all of the USB NICs end up overheating and disconnecting, but once clamped to a large heat sink they work OK. I ran my test firewall for about 3 months off of a similar device after clamping it to the side of a rack shelf to keep it cool. Why no RS232 adapter? I use a Bluetooth to RS232 adapter with small LiPo battery to get into switches/routers. Let's me use Android devices to get into these networking components, as well as a laptop. No travel for me right now, so no issue with the lipo.

The best tool I’ve ever purchased as a network engineer is the Airconsole XL from get-console.com - worth every penny. You should definitely get one.

I think it's been almost 2 years or more since I've had to use one. I'm really happy not to get calls from companies that have equipment that old. Most of the new stuff is USB.

That was one of my first thoughts as well. I don't need it often but a lot of devices still have serial access but its getting more rare. I will say his bag is a lot cleaner than mine. Mine has usb to mini, micro, c and lightning cables in it, various adapters for video out, a pile of misc usb sticks or portable ssds, etc.

@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS I ordered in new Cisco sg350mp-48 and they have serial. They also have dhcp client enabled on vlan1 that brings a webui up that you could enable ssh. However I have had to use maintainer user accounts while connected via serial to reset the admin on some Fortinet devices.
