“...I don’t use this one cuz...PLAY” Haha I burst out laughing. I avoid PLAY at ALL costs. Tried using it for quite some time and was part of my template a long time back, but when I say I avoid it now, what I really mean to say is it’s struck from my template snd I do not purchase or use ANY play libraries ever! Great overview, completely agree on your great choices here. Cineperc is especially wonderful for the exact reasons you mentioned.

I am quite excited about EW's new direction so I'm looking forward to try that out. But yeah, I try to avoid using PLAY if I can. It's gotten much better over time and the latest version is pretty stable. I just still find it to be clumsy at best, a buggy resource hog at the worst. I'm even thinking of getting my favorite percussion patches out of PLAY and creating my own custom patches in Kontakt just for myself. There were some really cool sounds in SD2.

I like CinePerc, but I am also a fan of the Spitfire Orchestral Perc. The cymbals and keyboards/mallets are fantastic. And I love the Spitfire timpani - they have a very different sound to CineSamples, not as heavy or solid, a more classical sound that I think works better in a lot of scenarios. The CineSamples timpani can be too full-sounding, so are hard to work into a mix, and the close mic position is sometimes buggy if you want to try and fix that problem. The Spitfire bass drums especially are not so good, I agree. They have that issue you mention with lack of low end. If you want good sounding bass drums with plenty of options... I love Berlin Percussion for this.

I'm not really sure I'd advise anyone to invest that much cash into this many libraries. If CinePerc sounds too full at times, it's very easy to EQ it (which one should do anyway) and thin it out, rather than buying another product. Also, the close mics in CinePerc would not thin out the sound (in fact I'm using them to thicken the sound). I'm a strong supporter of getting the most mileage out of what one has by using proper programming, orchestration and mixing technique. If that doesn't help, then maybe another library investment would be justified.

Awesome content as always! I learn a lot every time I watch your videos, so thank you! I'm curious though, why do you avoid PLAY-libraries? Is it stability, user friendliness or something else? Thank you for watching! I’m glad my content is helpful! As far as Play goes, my team and I have encountered too many bugs over the years while on a deadline. Play almost made us miss said deadlines which is unacceptable in a professional environment. It might be fine for those who don’t derive their main income from music but for me it’s been too risky to use.

@@AnneKathrinDernComposer It is consequently helpful and super interesting! That makes A LOT of sense! It was really buggy there for a while, a couple of years ago, but now it seems a lot better. I do have cinestrings as my main string library, so I'm not completely dying if PLAY dies again, but sampling SD2 and putting it into Kontakt might not be the worst idea! Let me know if I can help out there, as it works fine here for the time being :D

Idk if someone else has maybe talked about it, but I'd guess that HZ sounds better than the other Spitfire stuff because it was mixed by Hans himself, not one of their mixing engineers. So that'd explain why that library sounds better. In my opinion, if there's one thing Hans knows incredibly well, it'd definitely be percussion.

I went straight for Damage 2 and I really like it. But as you said, I rarely use loops. It almost feels like cheating to me. But I know I paid for those loops by buying the library so I'd still use them for some quick production in case of a quick deadline.
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
@AnneKathrinDernComposer 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think it really depends on the project. I know on my projects I wouldn't be allowed to use pre-made loops and it would have consequences if the production found out later. Some library houses now also forbid the use of pre-made loops and even in a school setting this can have negative consequences.

On your note of being able to pick out sounds from Damage... I've had that debate about lots of different kinds of libraries. It's worse in digital music production because we're talking about the "exact" same sound sources. On that note, I agree that we shouldn't use pre-made loops (unless you can heavily process them without it sounding like you did so). But instrument patches are perfectly fine, even if they're "common" among our peers. If you put it in context, complaining about "everyone using Damage" is like being snobby about "Oh, this recording of X symphony is played by the Berlin phil and I can tell because of how the brass sounds... why does everyone like the Berlin phil so much?" Is that really such a bad thing? Different ensembles have characteristic sounds, and if we use them because that's what we like/want to hear, there's nothing wrong with that. The only people who these commonly used libraries really "irritates" is our peer composers. The majority of the people who hear the pieces we compose are not composers themselves, and they will have no idea. That's what matters.

I've heard many composers dis on EW's Play. I've never heard the reasons why apart from some vague thing about it being poorly optimised. As someone who owns most of the libraries you wouldn't use (lol) do you think you could elaborate a little maybe in the next video? Thanks. Personally, I find it just fine, though maybe I'm missing stuff from some of the newer and more expensive libraries. I do own a lot of Heavyocity and various other Kontakt instruments, it's just that EW is my main orchestral library.
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
@AnneKathrinDernComposer 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on how you use it. In a large orchestral template, it can cause many an issue. It's a resource hog and since it has no backend you can't fix the many mistakes in the outdated samples (badly timed shorts, volume imbalances, bad legato transitions etc.). Some of those issues might even stem from the engine itself and not from the sample editing. PLAY has gotten better with each version but once a customer is lost, they are lost. It's less stable than Kontakt and PLAY has some serious bugs that pop up randomly when several instances of it are loaded and filled at the same time. My additional writer and I almost missed a deadline for a recording session at Abbey Road because of it. We had to re-install PLAY every hour while printing stems because it was acting up so much. And we were in different locations on different systems and in different templates - so this happened completely independently from one another. Aside from that the EW stuff is just really outdated and not on par with more modern libraries. It doesn't produce professional sounding results anymore and my clients are used to much higher quality. Whenever one of my writers is using it, I can immediately hear it and if it can't be helped by using other libraries, then I have to do a lot in the mix and edit to make things work on a professional production.
