Just gonna say that Pearl's are clam boogers. Not kidding. Just like what happens in your nose, when something that irritates the clam enters inside it, it coats it in mucus that hardens over time and becomes the "pearl" we know.

It doesn’t exactly filter the water Clams are still animals that need to eat actual nutrients not toxic waste. Infact they expel waste too so it’s not like they are just a vacuum cleaner or something

I have an early memory of being at a family party in Wisconsin and a 60 year old relative was opening live freshwater clams with his bare hands. So far I've never seen anyone else able to do that.

I've known that clams have feet exactly since 6th grade when I've first learned about it. It never left my memory because I was as shocked about this fact as probably you when you're watching this. I even drew a fishnet sock on the foot of the clam in the picture in my book.

But they form pearls in response to irritants and clamp up when they feel out of water or threatened... So they must have some sensors I guess

@@marfisilva Yep. Maybe just not 'pain' receptors? For example we humans don't have pressure-pain receptors in the skin of our elbows. (You can pinch tge skin there as hard as you can, it doesn't hurt) Maybe clams have some sort of touch receptors or something 🤔

You can actually open a clam easily by using two spoons as a lever and jam it on the hinge part. Its easier that going in the front.

So wait, if farms make oysters go through a x amount of day cleansing period and I assume clams too, can they be eaten straight out of the water, say if you were on a deserted island?

Living in a tropical island in the Philippines.. clams, seafoods and shells etc are just a normal thing to eat. I just ate mussels and oysters dipped it in a spiced vinegar yum yum yum fresh from the ocean 😋
