What's inside a senior food commodity box? January 2025

I wrote a grocery list as she pulled out items, then put comparable prices I would find in my area of Texas. Some items I lowballed, like put $1.00 instead of $1.29 for canned kidney beans. My lowball total came to $72/box. Lowball total for 1-year equals $864+. Also want to point out a few things many commenters seem to be ignorant of: 1. These items are government surplus, not donations from private food processing corporations you find at food banks/pantries. 2. All items must be shelf-stable, that's why all meats/fish must be canned, not frozen or refrigerated. 3. These boxes are compiled at government facility, THEN distributed at local pick-up locations. People you see at pick-up station did NOT pack these boxes. 4. Government's FROZEN meats/fish are reserved for military service members, not for general public. 5. These boxes aren't supposed to cater to each individual's allergies or medical conditions; that's up to you to figure it out. 6. To get "Senior Pack" box, you must first apply & qualify just like food stamps. Children CANNOT receive these boxes. 7.Many commenters criticized the canned meat/fish & cheese loaf, yet these are considered high priced items if you bought them at grocery store. 24 oz canned beef is $10. 2lbs cheese loaf around $8. 15 oz canned salmon $4 - $5. Price to reconstitute a gallon of milk from powder is very close to price for fresh milk, around $4 -$5 per gallon. If you don't need it, then don't apply for it. But stop the condemnation of those that do need this assistance.

Agreed. Many of those items (Cream of Wheat, potato flakes, and powdered milk) were cupboard staples when i was growing up. My Dad worked two jobs to support my Mom and four kids. We were happy to have a meal every night. There’s a little bit of everything in that box.

It's obvious that some of you have no idea what is like to NEED help, so you should keep your snark to yourselves. Several years ago these boxes saved my life, I only received $750 a month from ssd and my rent and utilities took 95% of it, I couldn't afford many groceries and this box plus our food pantry enabled me to make casseroles and eat 1 good meal a day. It was enough to sustain me and I was grateful to receive it, as I know others that are in need are. Before you turn your special noses up, remember this: One day it could be you in need and you too would be grateful.

I have been a volunteer at a local food pantry for 21 years. We feed up to 750 families a month. We never turn anyone away and fortunately, because of our generous donors and local grocery stores, most of the time we are able to give our clients fresh fruits and veggies, milk, eggs and meats. If you, or your mother, need additional help, check with your local pantries. Please don't be too proud. We are lovingly helping our neighbors and would not hesitate to ask for help for ourselves if needed. What many don't realize is that many of our volunteers are former clients, wanting to give back to the community. XOXO

Back in the 1960s, when I was a kid, my folks got commodities, which was actually the same food served to the military on base. Very large cans of fruits, vegetables, and cooked beef (veins and all). We were thankful for it, as my father had gotten hurt and was unable to work for a time. I don't think people understand that there was a time when there weren't a lot of social programs. Families usually helped each other. The commodities program was one of the first. Usually reserved for calamities and natural disasters.

O my goodness, so many closed minded people commenting on this, very needed, service for the elderly and needy. Shame on you. Let’s hope you are never in need of helping hand. I think that box is wonderful and you’ll be surprised what the elderly can conjure up with those staples. They know how to make things go further and turn something that maybe a little bland into a lovely meal for themselves. Well done to whoever provides this service and I hope it keeps going 👍

I volunteer in my community for Groceries to Go that pack and deliver these to seniors in my community. It is a good box of shelf stable food that is ment supplement their diets. They are so appreciative of the food and the visit each month.

This is the option for seniors who do not qualify for snap. I am a qualifying senior in Indiana and received exactly the same package. It is basic foodstuffs but it helps a lot.

Agree. In many instances the canned foods are actually fresher. For example tomatoes are often canned at peak freshness the same day they're picked, while the " fresh" ones available at your local market may be weeks or even months old by the time they arrive there.

Awesome, in Tennessee in 1970 we would stand in line for hours, commodity cheese, like Velveeta cheese, can food, peanut butter, evaporated milk, powered milk, flour. Commodity butter,. People was poor, this helped so much.

I can see that this would allow one to use their grocery budget to purchase the spices, flour, oil, and other essential ingredients for everyday cooking and for using these items in delicious recipes! Thank you for showing us what your Mom got in her commodity box. My Mom also got the boxes back in the 80's, but the boxes were very skimpy, not much of anything, except the cheese & dry milk. Still it helped her with food for the month. I applied for the Senior boxes, but my Social Security is a little over the income limit, but I apply every year just in case. I can't understand anyone critizing people getting these boxes. Seniors are especially in need of help. I, too, am worried about these programs continuing under the new administration. The billionaires don't care about us. They only care about money for themselves!

This takes me back to when I was very young and we were dirt-spittin' poor. We got some good stuff in those commodities. I really loved the cheese and the peanut butter. And there were powdered eggs that my mother somehow made almost palatable. Those things kept us alive, and I'm so grateful for them now. I've not heard about this program since I was a kid; glad to see it's still around.

I think this box is excellent. So much you could do with all these items. The powdered milk could be used making the mashed potatoes, eating the cereal or cream of wheat…or making a cake mix or corn bread. What a blessing for so many people!

We weren't on commodities, but my dad worked in the same warehouse where the commodities were stored and handed out. Sometimes they would give him items that were close to expiration. My mom was happy cause when we got that and while we could manage without them, it meant she could buy extra meat(hamburger...bacon)from the store.

Reconstituted powdered dry milk mixed 1/2 and 1/2 with regular milk and served VERY cold is acceptable especially on cereal or with chocolate or strawberry flavorings are added. At least it was 40 yrs ago when I was squeezing every cent dry. Get the kids used to it and save some money. We had it for the dogs when I was a kid. On Fridays they got milk. Dad would stand with the plate of half-dollar sized pancakes he made with the leftover batter and they'd take turns catching their pancakes. With syrup. Dad said they liked them with syrup. The collie/samoyed brothers were my best pals.

Back in the 70’s my grandmother got the commodities. She was a woman who had worked extremely hard all her life but mostly at low paying jobs or jobs for cash so nothing was contributed to her social security. Therefore she didn’t receive much from social security. Those commodities made a big difference in her food security. She often couldn’t eat all the cheese or peanut butter so would give me some. As a young family not making a lot this was greatly appreciated.

On the website it says that you may be able to get these boxes while on SNAP. It also said this is in all 50 states to some degree. Might be worth looking into. This box would really stretch my food stamp dollars. My fridge is empty at the end of the month. My freezer has butter bought on sale a bag of raw chicken tenderloins and ice packs in it. Pantry similarly bare. Not cooking much as I'm currently camping in a sister's spare room waiting to hit the top of the wait list for senior disabled affordable housing. Then I'll be cooking again. It was a 12-18 month wait list. On month 22. Soon, I hope.

It makes the Best grilled cheese sandwich’s🥪 The government should sell them to those of us who enjoy it, yet do not qualify for their program. Great items in the box. I remember my mom and cousins would gather at my great-aunties home and make salmon patties. They all would bring something, whether it was the salmon, saltines, a side dish and drinks. As a Type 2 diabetic, I’d have difficulty controlling my blood sugar with all the starchy foods, and apple juice is basically liquid sugar. Not criticizing or judging, but medication alone isn’t enough to compensate for diet. It’s a shame for people to have to choose between going hungry or compromising their health and increasing their medical costs. It’s a dilemma.

Your boxes are good selections. Cook chicken in the rice maybe mixed veggies or corn added. Freeze some. I've seen my neighbors receiving monthly boxes. Hope this is what they receive. Make soup mama and freeze some. Eating my zucchini soup made and frozen in Nov.. Thanks! GO SENIORS, WE ROCK!

I live in south Mississippi and would be delighted to receive this box. At local prices, this is well over $50 of shelf stable food and I have many similar items in my pantry. I am a heart/kidney patient and would especially appreciate the canned no salt added veggies. If there was anything I did not want, I would consider trading with another box recipient, or sharing with someone in need. It would not go to waste!

These Senior Pack boxes DO NOT work like a food bank. You must apply for them just like food stamps, which means a time delay at least 1 month (maybe 2 months depending on your state's processing schedule). Don't wait until you're out of groceries, thinking you're just going to waltz into their office & receive a commodity box then & there.

At my senior center we have daily meals or we can use meals on wheels. It’s not free,it’s $4.00 a meal. When I see the selection in this box,it reminds me of the senior dietary standard they follow when cooking meals daily.All of those beans are fiber rich but also protein rich and you can add them to your soups, stews or salads. Same with the powdered milk, you can make protein rich smoothies, just add frozen fruit…or add the powdered milk to your canned soups for an extra protein punch. Seniors need more fiber because are systems get slower, it is good for gut health. We need more protein and Vitamin D for stronger bones and muscles. You don’t just get that from dairy, you need magnesium to go with the Vitamin D to boost your bones, muscles and digestion. That box is a great way to eat healthy and stretch meals. ❤ Happy days to your momma, I love apple juice too.

That's a very generous amount of food with good items. Many of those can be stretched into good meals that would last a couple days. Decades ago when I was a young mother, my husband's employer suddenly left the area. Job opportunities were scarce but he worked any job he could find. We were eligible for government cheese and we were so grateful to receive it. I made as many meals I could stretch with it. I'll never forget how good it tasted.

I think this is a great box. I would really appreciate the powdered milk. Mix up a small portion and refrigerate it until it is really cold. It's great on cereals or use it for bread making. This box is filled with nutritious meals waiting to be made by you, the recipient. On line recipes are abundant!!!! Not a thing missing for several, healthy good meals here. Enjoy.💕

New to the channel. I didn’t know they still did that! I remember my grandmother getting commodities but I don’t know if it was in a box. I think it’s a great variety! Many meals in that box!

I think that the box of food is very good! Some of the off brands are ones that I buy! I can't always get out to shop due to some health and car issues. Thank you for letting us see what is offered!

That was a good box. Able to actually make meals to help supplement. Put some of the juice in the cream of wheat when you cook it for a sweet treat or snack.

That's why creativity is always a plus😊❤️ I drain the fruit, rinse it with plain water, then freeze it to add to plain oatmeal or coconut milk yogurt.

My husband works with low income Veterans. We publish recipes that they can make with commodity type foods. If this augments your income, you can get spices from the dollar store, use two items in a mixed casserole or big pot of soup. Soup bones are cheap and add flavor to soups, chili, and making beef broth for flavor. I believe if you need assistance this is a good way to get foods to feed yourself and your children. Share recipes with others who remember the good old recipes our Grandmas made. I hope your Mother enjoys her meals
