for everyone talking about the govt cheese from the 70-80s that cheese in the video is WAAAYYYY different. The other one was more of a hard cheese ...the one in the video is very soft like velveeta blocks....pain in the neck to cut , ok tasting takes longer than you think to melt . We have gotten it in a food box and are grateful ..it makes a decent mild mac and cheese if you add real butter and some seasonings. ...we do chipoltle, garlic, a bit of parmesan, and some herb like parsley or rosemary (whatever i grab off the spice rack...lol) ..It keeps a very long time in the fridge, do not recommend freezing the PB is not great , use it with something sweet .....beef in a can is handy as an add in for things like rice and beans or pasta sauce...best way is to open -drain the grease , take out of can onto plate , remove the congeled fat/grease then use otherwise it is too oily .

The milk in that box wasn't dried milk, it's shelf-stable liquid milk. It's labeled 1% milk, but it tastes like reconstituted evaporated (canned) milk. It's actually not nearly as bad as the old-fashioned powdered milk used to be. Decades ago, I'd get one gallon of whole milk from the store and mix 1/3 with 2/3 reconstituted powdered milk too make the powdered milk drinkable or usable. This is so much better than that was.
@MelonieTriesRecipes14 сағат бұрын
Mom received both dry milk and a carton of shelf stable milk.

Being a senior living on social security, i can vouch for how grateful i am for the occasional commodity box i get. It means the difference between a week of cheap broth with crackers and a few halfway decent meals to make it through to the next payday. And that shelf-stable milk is actually pretty good, surprisingly. I'm glad your mom got such a nice commodity box.

ive gotten similar boxes. That " chicken" is vile, the dry milk has no flavor, the cereal is usually very stale. About half of that is not fit to eat. I got one box that contained Fennel bulbs, horseradish sauce, pickles and dry milk. WTF was i supposed to do with that ?

My granny got a commodities box back in the 70s and 80s. Man, she made the BEST pimento cheese with that big block of cheese. Better than the premade stuff. I didn't realize they were still doing this.

the cheese isn't the same anymore. That was the most delicious cheese. The canned beef if better than it sounds too, kind of like Italian beef

My parents used to get these before they died. They never asked me for help, I found out about when I went to visit. They were happy getting it, so I was too. People who turn up their nose at this can keep their comments for the mirror. I think the box is great, certainly provides some basics to help people who deserve help.

The price of processed cheese is about the same as real cheese. You'd think if they want to keep it healthy, they could give some real cheese. Especially here in Wisconsin.

I was raised by an elderly great aunt. We always got the huge square of cheese and big can of butter; but we also got a big old can of peanut butter! I STILL remember that peanut butter because it was so good! Sometimes she was given a bag of flour or corn meal. (Cornbread was nearly always on the table for dinner! Wish I knew how she made it, because I also remember it was really good too!)

Great question. I have a short showing me making it. About 1 cup miracle whip About 2-3 tablespoons ketchup About 1 tablespoon sweet relish Mix well, taste, adjust amounts as desired for your taste If it's too thick, add a small amount of water being careful not to add too much. Thank you for your awesome question.
