In this video we take a look at what's inside of an air conditioner reciprocating compressor. It was great to have Jay from Word of Advice TV as well as Reuben Sahlstrom who opened two other compressors. Jay takes a look at what's inside a scroll compressor while Reuben Sahlstrom opens a two stage reciprocating unit! We had a great time and hopefully will do more collaboration videos in the future. Let us know what you think!

That copper coloring on the parts inside of the compressor on and around the bypass valve is because of the system was introduced to moisture at one time that creates acid with electricity involved it creates nickel plating more than likely what killed the compressor!

A channel I often watch is Carlos a Panno Refrigeracion. He is a refrigeration tech in Argentina who will often take compressors apart, repair and reassemble them. The channel is in spanish, but you can turn on the autotranslated english subtitles to understand what he is saying.

Most reciprocating refrigerant compressors use 2 pistons to increase efficiency at a given capacity. A 2-stage compressor simply has the ability to mechanically reduce its capacity from 100% down to 50-65% for a "low stage". Typically 2-stage reciprocating compressors will end up going into second stage to satisfy a call for cooling but the first stage typically helps to improve dehumidification during the first portion of the call.

Ive modified several scroll compressors to work with my garage air compressor the one's I get fit out about the same cfm as a standard 2 cyl air compressor found in most houses . Its more a complicated water oil separator and oil drain that recirculates the oil back to the scroll intake.

That small pressure tube you twisted off of the first compressor is a process tube. That’s how they evacuate and charge the unit in the factory. Then it’s pinched off and brazed closed.

A three phase reciprocating compressor can run in either rotation. If it's a three phase scroll, it may only operate properly in one designated rotation. The discharge line, is not the liquid line... That other "suction" port, is called the process tube.

Compressors are rated in pounds per hour of refrigerant flow. Simple math conversion to tonnage or btu capacity but many variables in condensing temperatures with different types of refrigerants so when designing a system we use pounds per hour.

So technically the pressures wouldn’t change much if it runs in reverse? Great collaboration seeing the insides of the different compressors. Thank you!
@jennismith1443
@jennismith1443 3 жыл бұрын
Pressure change wouldn’t happen in reverse, vapor refrigerant can only go through a compressor one way to get pressure change. That’s why there are reversing valves in heat pumps, and not a reverse gear in a compressor.

Nobody talks about how the compressor is able to move inside the case on its suspension while there is a solid pipe connection to the discharge port that has to be cut in order to remove the compressor from the case. Nobody examines the discharge port connection at the bottom of the case. I have 2 reciprocating compressors, one is new and the other is an old one that ran normally when taken out of service. Both of them allow movement of the compressor inside the case, you can feel and hear the compressor moving inside and clunking around in there when you pick them up and handle them. So I watch these cut-open videos to see that discharge port connection at the bottom inside the case, and they always skip over that as they cut the pipe and remove the compressor from the case. I reckon I will have to cut one open myself.

They are Vapor compressors always. Liquid causes slugging. Refrigerant can enter an accumulator as a liquid, then the compressor pulls the vapor from it. Vapor Refrigerant is then superheated through the compressor. the superheated vapor goes to the condenser, and if all is running right, the superheated vapor condenses, and you can check for proper sub cooling. The thermal overload opens due to high head pressures from dirty condenser or no fan.

That top manifold on the first compressor is a oil pump to circulate oil on the winding so the copper winding doesn't over heat. It isn't a pressurized system. Those plastic parts on the two tubes are just shock protectors to protect against rough handling of the compressor. At least that's my theory.

Could the two pistons be there to keep the high pressure manifold under consistent pressure, rather than a single piston that would only compress half of the time?
@JasonW.
@JasonW. 3 жыл бұрын
Rather than one longer throw piston, two short throw pistons. This might allow a lower and more stable current draw, along with less surges. This also would allow for a faster crank speed while still having a slower piston max speed.

Hi Benjamin, I am start watching your channel and it is very interesting all the content. Thank you for share it to all. Now I have a question. If I am no mistaken the AC and the condenser that is installed in my house still the original which would be now 10 years old my house was built it in 2010. At todays date the unit works fine no issues so do you have any suggestion on how to do some type of preventive maintenance before something happen to it? Do you know what is typically the first element that may start failure it? Any recommendation will be appreciated. Once again thank you. My name is Frank
@BenjaminSahlstrom
@BenjaminSahlstrom 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank! There is nothing you need to do to your AC compressor or the refrigeration circuit. The best things to do are to make sure that the coils are clean, you change the air filter often, and make sure things are generally clean. Thanks for being a subscriber!

@@BenjaminSahlstrom Ok as far replacement the filters I do it at least every two months. Everytime I take the dirty out does not look really bad. I also have another question, I only have a furnaces up in the attic and my house is two histories no basement. Always the issue is that the temperature either cold or hot it maintains very good upstairs but no the same downstairs I had check every tube that supplies the air to the down part of the house but everything looks fine. Any suggestion what is happening?
