Too afraid to ask: why do metal guitarists have a habit of scooping the mids?
@tlw42375 жыл бұрын
Makes a heavily distorted sound less harsh by reducing harmonics the distortion would otherwise make a screaming noise with no definition. Also reduces the frequency build-up in the mids without which the guitar would be the only thing you’d hear.
@ansgarlorenz4 жыл бұрын
Part of the reason: it leaves sonic room for the vocals or for lead guitar. Kerry King does the opposite (frowny face on a graphic eq). So it depends on the band dynamics as well as a stylistic thing.

@@TriodesPs111 The baritone part is important. What most people don't understand is that when adding lots of distortion the low-end needs to be mitigated somehow in order to keep your tone from becoming muddy. A bright, low output pickup in a guitar like this is one way to handle it. Some people boost the treble, but this works too. I've played danelectros and baritone Jazzmasters that both bear this out. It's not conventional or "better" but it works.

I very recently came across your channel and enjoy it very much. The gear reviews are great ... but lots of channels do that. I enjoy it because you have a much better than average grasp on the actual technology. Presentation style is great too ... the tech is presented in a way that doesn't seem boring and fundamental to a tech person (like me, I'm an engineer) but at the same time is not too complex for non-techies to grasp. Last, you deliver the information in a way that clearly indicates that you know exactly what your talking about. So, you either have formal engineering training or worked as a guitar tech ... either way ... love the channel, keep up the good work.

The original Gibson Melody Maker single-coil pickups (that look like Fender Mustang pickups from the outside), are very similar to the insides of a Lipstick. Certainly more turns on the coil and plastic, rather than metal, cover (hence a different tone) but they also use a coil wound directly around an alnico bar magnet. The same is true of the two coils in a Firebird pickup. Where many "dual-rail" type humbuckers, have a ferromagnetic blade in the centre of each coil, magnetically coupled by a bar magnet between them, the Firebird pickup is two discrete single-coils, each similar to the Lipstick and Melody-Maker pickups. It would not surprise me if the MM pickups simply used individual coils prepared for the Firebird, but I will leave confirmation of that to the historians and pickup savants. Note that the Gibson mini-humbucker is not JUST cosmetically distinct from the Firebird pickups, but employs the same sort of dual-ferromagnetic "poles", coupled by a central bar magnet that the full-sized humbuckers use. Finally, Danelectro guitars historically used a *wooden* core, and not plastic, as Colin suggested in passing. Remember that these were first and foremost BUDGET guitars. The use of "garbage" wood (poplar - rarely, if ever, used for instruments) for the unseen core, and masonite/pressboard for the tops and backs, made materials costs low, required little selection of wood for things like grain or machinability, and fabrication was simple and cheap. Moulding a plastic core in the 1950s would have put these guitars out of the economic reach of most players. The plastic tape that surrounds the sides around the entire body might *suggest* the middle is plastic, but it IS wood, just in case there was any misunderstanding.

Mark seemed to be entranced by that guitar and forgot all about the dozens of folks who'd gathered at Earl Musick's studio that day from miles around for his birthday celebration. First time I'd seen or heard a 'Danny' live. Waaay cool sounding but really funky looking, like a cross between a surfboard and a kitchen appliance. Question: Why are some strings on a guitar wound and others aren't? Why do you need winding on thicker strings, and not on thinner strings?
@deangullberry51485 жыл бұрын
Answering from the perspective of someone who works with metals: Wrapping a thinner core wire allows the string to stay flexible, and maintain resonance. Even an aluminum (very soft) wire the size of a low E string is extremely stiff.
@773Spair5 жыл бұрын
To put it another way: plain strings (non-wound) are very stiff when one is too thick for a given scale length (the length of the string from the bridge to the nut). If a plain string is too thick, it will sound for a pretty short time without being picked again. I think many would agree the tone isn't very desirable. A wound string is like a plain string with a thinner string wound around it. A wound string is more flexible, will sustain (sound out) for longer, and has a more desirable tone than a plain string which is too thick. Higher tunings require thinner strings, and a wound string, or any other kind of string, becomes too frail to be depended on if it's too thin, which is why the highest-pitched strings are plain, rather than wound. A .024"/.61 mm plain string tuned to Db over a 25.5"/65 cm scale length would quickly become silent and wouldn't sound too good, but if you used a wound string (which is a little thicker), it would sound out for longer and sound better. A wound .017"/.432 mm string tuned to Ab would be too fragile to be considered reliable, but a plain string (which is a little thinner) would likely not break.

I was thinking of sticking a high(ish) output P90(11kΩ) into the bridge of the two pick version. I was hoping that the pots would be fine as they are (whatever they are) because the lipsticks would have lost some top end in the casing and would still match a slightly more powerfully overwound ceramic P90. Am I doing the right thing? I don't want to be messing around changing pots, but am happy routing a P90 hole in the front at the neck.

Leo Fender is often described as a genius for his designs of Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars. But much of his real genius was designing and producing guitars that didn’t have to be made by luthiers with years of experience mostly by hand one at a time. Bolt-on necks, straight headstocks with string trees to get a break angle, adjustable bridge and saddle for correct intonation, pickups designed for the instrument, and inexpensive wood types rather than high end tone woods like rosewood, Brazilian mahogany, ebony and Sitka Spruce. Fenders were made mostly from ash, alder, and maple, inexpensive and easily sourced. Nathan Daniel was also a genius for taking Leo’s direction and making even more inexpensive electric guitars with a unique tone of their own. He proved that they didn’t even need to be made of wood. They could be made from composite and even plastic with pickups stuffed into a real lipstick case. Genius.

The middle position in danelectro's are wired to sound like a humbucker. Also they're not plastic as stated in the video

Dano lipstick pups are exelent! They give a great feel for easy playing.

I have a '66 Danelectro Longhorn bass. That thing sounds great. The new Dano's are excellent build quality and unique sounding instruments. And inexpensive.

@CSGuitars TATA - How does it sound if you play a guitar with a Neck and Bridge pickup running on a separate signal chain? I mean separate cables, separate pedals and amp.

Hey Colin, can you tell what will happen when we connect the North start, North finish and the South finish wires of a 4 wire humbucker and use it as a hot output while grounding the south start wire....?? (I came across these scheme in a wiring diagram on a website and I'm confused how that actually works ;_;)

I’ve got a Danelectro. Really the only guitar I’ve ever played with. But I do love it. It’s just so simple and has a cool aesthetic to it. I got mine in maybe ‘07 or ‘08. It was only $250 I believe. It was cool tho, I walked into one of our local music stores, and right in the front were 3 Danelectro guitars. Each had a different body and different color. I went with the blue one. Same body shape as the one in this video, but a darker blue, and less glossy finish. Also the knobs were just the two single black knobs. I kinda want to get those other two I saw back then.

#TATA (but actually I'm not really too afraid to ask, obviously) What do _fanned frets_ do and why should I want them? I mean, I know what they are (frets are not parallel, as usual), what's the effect of that construction (each string has a different scale length) but why constructing a guitar like this? What benefit do I get from that as a player?

TATA on Gold Foil pickups? What makes them so clear?
@megan_alnico5 жыл бұрын
Traditional ones used a side mounted rubber magnet and a very flat design which was very unique for its time. It also had a big metal plate on the back kinda like a Tele pickup. I'd love to here Colins take though. There were a bunch of different people making them on their hay day. Edit: oh and less winds then other single coils.

Are there different types of single coil pickups from a dimension point of view? For example, if you you buy a bridge single coil, can you use the same bridge single coil pickup for a strat, tele and mustang? What about the same neck single coil pickup pickup? If not, why not? Cheers! Greu from Glasgow

So these are different from the Tele neck pickup design? Are those just a conventional single coil with a metal cover?
@flapjack413 Жыл бұрын
I see this video is from four years ago, so this question may never be seen, but I'm gonna try anyway. Being that the pickup is enclosed in a grounded metal enclosure, are they less susceptible to RF interference and other outside noise, compared to a standard single coil?

So what happens if you put a normal bobbin(?) into the lipstick housing?

I purchased a Squire with 3 Lipstick PUs which sounds awesome. Expecting these to be on the bright side & put on a set of 10-52s but found surprisingly that it made everything thick & muddy in the bottom end, even lowering the bass side of the PU didn't help. So I drop down to 10-42 which balanced the tones out so much better. The sound is so different to my standard Texas Specials in my other Strat.
