What is inside a Lipstick Pickup? In fact, what's the deal with such an unusual name?
While visiting Thomann for TGU19 I got the chance to pickup a Danelectro guitar and with the help of Ryan from 60 Cycle Hum we were able to discover what lies beneath those shiny covers...

Too afraid to ask: why do metal guitarists have a habit of scooping the mids?
@tlw4237
@tlw4237 5 жыл бұрын
Makes a heavily distorted sound less harsh by reducing harmonics the distortion would otherwise make a screaming noise with no definition. Also reduces the frequency build-up in the mids without which the guitar would be the only thing you’d hear.
@ansgarlorenz
@ansgarlorenz 4 жыл бұрын
Part of the reason: it leaves sonic room for the vocals or for lead guitar. Kerry King does the opposite (frowny face on a graphic eq). So it depends on the band dynamics as well as a stylistic thing.

@@benakanecrophile2878 But if overdone it stops the guitar sounding like a guitar any more. Or it makes all kinds of guitar sound very much the same, the biggest difference between an overdriving Tele and SG/Les Paul is mostly in the mids. Which is fine if that’s the effect you want.

When using zero effects or pedals nothing beats the tone of a single lipstick pickup plugged directly into the Fender or Marshall amp. They kinda create their own reverb. I've got an all original 1960 dolphin nose Silvertone U-1 and it's the best sounding guitar I've ever heard when using zero effects. Direct is the way to go with these beauties.

Its weird to think , the DC59 nos+ is a newer run ( a couple of years old ) but the pickups are already 20 years old ( hence the NOS), They are from a lost order of pickups from '99 ... and i love that the middle position puts the pickups in series instead of parallel.

Leo Fender is often described as a genius for his designs of Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars. But much of his real genius was designing and producing guitars that didn’t have to be made by luthiers with years of experience mostly by hand one at a time. Bolt-on necks, straight headstocks with string trees to get a break angle, adjustable bridge and saddle for correct intonation, pickups designed for the instrument, and inexpensive wood types rather than high end tone woods like rosewood, Brazilian mahogany, ebony and Sitka Spruce. Fenders were made mostly from ash, alder, and maple, inexpensive and easily sourced. Nathan Daniel was also a genius for taking Leo’s direction and making even more inexpensive electric guitars with a unique tone of their own. He proved that they didn’t even need to be made of wood. They could be made from composite and even plastic with pickups stuffed into a real lipstick case. Genius.

@@rainbowslushy223 gold foil pickups were a type of cheap guitar pickup Japanese companies used in the 60s. But like Danelectro and lipstick pickups, these days gold fouls are highly sought out and well regarded. And many companies have started making NEW gold foil style pickups, in all sorts of shapes and sizes (so like you can get humbucker size or fender single coil size or p90 size etc) They sound different to anything else I've ever heard. They've got a very rich complex tone. Ry Cooder is famous for using them for his slide guitar playing. I'm planning to get a cheap good tele and put gold foils into it. They just sound so cool. It's hard to explain the sound really, so just go search for KZbin videos on them

Alright, here is my TATA. What is the difference between Tube Screamers? As far as I know, Maxon made the originals, and put the Ibanez name on them. Now, they BOTH make Tube Screamers. Maxon has the OD808, the OD-9, SD-9. Ibanez makes the TS808, the TS9, TS9DX, the NTS, a 40th Anniversary which is more than double the price, and several others. What is the difference? Is there any difference? Why would I buy one over the other?

Future TATA request/suggestion - what the hell is a Univibe? I know what it sounds like - as a member of the Church of Hendrix, I bloody love the sound - but other than it being vaguely related to a chorus and/or vibrato, I'm in the dark (ironic, given they have a light-bulb in them). Your videos on Chrous, Flanger and Phaser with TC Electronic explained these effects really well. Is there scope for doing the same with that most psychedelic of modulation effects?
@tlw4237
@tlw4237 5 жыл бұрын
A univibe is basically a kind of phaser. What makes them unique is the frequency band the phase sweep operates over, the ability to mix in the dry guitar sound with the effect (“chorus” setting, which is not the same thing as a chorus pedal) or hear just the effected sound (“vibrato” effect). They also have an unusual LFO wave shape that was originally created using lights and light-dependent resistors to create the wave which means it’s lop-sided.

@ScienceofLoud
@ScienceofLoud 5 жыл бұрын
The DC resistance of the copper is what is being quoted in ohms for a pickup. You are measuring its resistive ability. This tells you effectively how much copper there is which has a very loose connection to the output level of the pickup. It's actually not a hugely useful metric to judge a pickup by. Measuring inductance can tell you far more, but that isn't as easy to measure without specialised equipment.

Nacho Altamirano The short answer: It would mostly just sound wider. In order to make a sound that is perceived as twice as loud as the original sound, you would need ten times that amount. Ten amps will sound twice as loud as one, and one hundred amps will sound twice as loud as ten (assuming that they are all set to the same volume, of course).

Thank you, i know the logarithmic thing about volume, but in this case its two amps parallel. I feel its louder but i need a physicall answer 😁

Oh, and a question about patch leads (as you know, I Seek Redemption). I've got a half tidy pedal board, 12 cheapo patch cables, I/O FX send return are in a patch bay at the back. Some of my patch cables are a bit buzzy and need a wiggle - as you can imagine this is a huge pain in the dick - is there anyway of testing patch leads to work out which is/are the buzzy ones? I don't want to replace all of them - I've tried just listening with each lead plugged in individually and it was inconclusive. Board pic: pbs.twimg.com/media/D8yParfW4AE3TUF.jpg

That's funny, I always thought the name was just a nod to how the pickups looked, not that they were ACTUALLY made with lipstick tubes.

i dont know about those amps but i play everything from super oldschool rock and roll to modern djent metal with a danelectro 56 baritone and the lipstick pickups have givin some of the best tones for all the stuff i play. for anyone in doubt, heres a vid to prove they sound great for heavier stuff, kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaqrlYt5jsaoo80 i seriously love these guitars. the guy in the vid says the 56 bari is good for low G or even F tuning, but i personally love it in drop A

Or better yet, can you dial in a 'SLAYERRRRR!' sound with a Metal Zone (or 7)?

@@TriodesPs111 The baritone part is important. What most people don't understand is that when adding lots of distortion the low-end needs to be mitigated somehow in order to keep your tone from becoming muddy. A bright, low output pickup in a guitar like this is one way to handle it. Some people boost the treble, but this works too. I've played danelectros and baritone Jazzmasters that both bear this out. It's not conventional or "better" but it works.

I have a Danelectro 56 tuned to C standard and I use it for sludge metal. Lipstick pickups sound great with high gain amps and/or fuzz.

I was wondering, I know Oliver Ackernan uses them in his Frankencasters. Only because he found a load cheap on ebay. He does gnarly guitar, I was wondering if the hsngke gets rough enough.

A neat fact is that lipstick pickups are quite similar to Burns Tri-Sonics, like the ones Brian May used in his Red Special. They're constructed more or less identical, only the Burns pickups are obviously in a different type of enclosure. You can also buy Strat pickup sized Tri-Sonics from Burns nowadays if you're interested in comparing the two.

Also they use different gauges of wire, being 44awg for the burns and 42 for the lipstick pickups.
