Morning! You mention the magic of "synchrosmoke" and the tender sound. Well, I still get that child-like thrill which transports me back to 1967 when Mum & Dad bought me the Intercity train set with three pullmans and Britannia, with synchrosmoke! It truly was magic on Christmas morning.

I have a triang princess victoria, the very same chassis as your princess class. I am having trouble with it though, it will not budge, it is also setting off the shorting sensor on my controller. I took it appart and cleaned everything but still no life. any tips???
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Hmm, yeah that's very odd - have you tried powering the motor separate from the chassis?? If it works fine, what can sometimes happen is the backs of the 'isolated' wheels (the ones with the pick-ups) can make contact with the live chassis, causing a short! You can tell if this is happening by powering the locomotive without the motor inside - if it still shorts, then that's probably your issue! Otherwise, make sure all the wiring is properly insulated, and not making any contact with the chassis at any point! Let me know how you get on! :D Cheers, Sam :)

I don't know what is up with so many people being offended with the trains not having their body shells I quite enjoy it seeing the inside workings of old(and new) model trains.I have a lot of old O gauge Lionel trains (since you are British you may or may not be familiar with them)from the 50's,60's and 70's and it kind of amazing that all old model trains of all scales all have very similar mechanisms but the one thing that these OO trains don't have opposed to o gauge trains (at least Lionel) is a automatic reversing unit or better known as a E-unit so you don't need a direction switch.defiantly want to see more of these videos!😁🚂
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
haha, no worries mate - I think the offended people are only joking, haha! Thanks for the comment mate - and those O gauge locomotives sound very interesting - I'd love to see an automatic reversing unit - probably no space for them in 00 gauge though ;) Thanks again, Sam :)

If I ever start a model railway company, I want to make a train that's 90% metal, with extreme details, the best 5 pole motor we can find, nearly perfect detail, a good smoke unit, good LEDs, and if I could figure it out, a working Walscaerts valve gear. Just make it the perfect model railway engine. Most likely a Santa Fe 2-10-2 engine.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
That would be amazing - but the huge challenge would be doing that for a good price! Even at the current typical level of detail, some manufacturers really struggle with that aspect! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

back in the early thirties and forties. There was a company here in the US called American Flyer it developed that piston with the smoke in it or the Piston would push the make the smoke check out period I have such of three of those types of locomotives it have that type of smoke you in it. and I have one from 19 48 it has a smoking it in a tender. how do you have smoked fluid for that locomotive if you do put some in the engine. In this unit and see if it still Chubbs just run it at a really high RPM and it really runs good and make it work again. You only need three to four drops and then put about 9 and after you want it start stuffing again
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks very much for the info on the smoke generators - I didn't know they dated back that far! I have a more modern Bachmann locomotive which has a different type of generator, which seems to work even better in fact! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan - nope, no problems in doing that at all - I often tend to do the same! The only slight issue is the reduction and weight (and then traction), but it's often not noticeable - though you can add extra weight if you feel you need to! All the best, Sam :)

Wonder if I could create a makeshift model loco by getting a chassis, fitting a cheap motor to it and other necessary mechanisms, then just make the bodyshell out of card/paper with a loco body design drawn, printed out and folded in a similar fashion to paper bus nets? Could be a cheaper alternative to buying a locomotive; I'm looking into diesels like the Class 47

Good stuff Sam, I love the older stuff, Wrenn is great but you have to watch your small balls, easily lost from the bearings :) I assume you have a bridge rectifier as part of your test bed loco to charge the capacitor up. Interesting idea for a video well done
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Mike, yeah I love them too - and yes, I bought a bag of them on your recommendation! Yeah there was a rectifier in the locomotive circuit - which charges the cap as the loco runs - it was somewhere underneath that blu-tac! All the best, Sam :)

On the Wrenn locos - the Castle has the original Meccano-designed Ringfield motor that came out in 1960. The Class 4 has the older design motor that most of the earlier Dublo locos had, it came out about 1950. It was a modification of the original motor design from 1938! So you are right, the vertical motor is more old fashioned. Nice video!

I have an old PIKO BR 130 diesel with similar drive. It has all wheel pickups, directional lights, and the motor (not ringfield), with the drive on the front bogie, in a good condition. Most people don't like these old model since even with its one set of tiers it is a relatively weak "Co-Co" engine with bellow average performance. What i did, that I brought another BR 130 from a start-set in a worn condition , and I put its motor, gears, and wheels into the other one, with addition some extra (lead) weight. Now it runs way better, and has a good pulling power (up to 30+ wagons instead of max 10) , witch usually surprises others.

Strange as after it was repaired the smoke unit stopped working. I never understood how they worked, I thought it was magic! I will strip her down and try to repair, thanks to your video I now know how they work. By the way Sam - have you done any videos covering clockwork locomotives? I used to play with my trains all the time when I was a child, but haven't touched them for about 10 years, but recently got back into them when I bought a mint boxed hornby clockwork set from the 70's/80's (All my trains are electric).

American flyer had a very similar smoke unit but theye invented it befor triange. American flyer trains were in s scale and you could see videos of them
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Ahh nice - that sounds very interesting! What year would that be then?? I did read the story about the tri-ang generators - they were invented by one guy, who kept them a big secret until he got the deal! All the best, Sam :)
@JakeGommer7 жыл бұрын
Sam'sTrains im not to shure in the years but from what i have heard and seen i think theye were first invented around the The 30s and 40s in o scale. There were also Versions in the tender and the boiler. They advertise them as smoke and choo-choo

older motors are alot more in treating to see rather than newer motors which have a casing on them

haha yeah that's very true - definitely much more interesting to look at! Cheers, Sam :)

the middle wheel is not touching the tracks
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Yes well spotted! They were designed that way - the tri-ang track had very tight curves, and so those middle wheels needed to fly over the rails so that the loco wouldn't derail! All the best, Sam :)

Very Interesting Sam, Still think those XO3 and XO4 are the best, just for the sheer simplicity and reliability. Ever looked at some of the Lima mechanisms? I've got an old 45xx 2-6-2t and the mechanism in that is a mass of gears, never even attempted to service it, its complex and scares me!! Still it ran quite well, if a little noisy. By the way, worse model train motor is NOT the old tender drive ringfield, its the Hornby X2258 they use in the cheap 0-4-0's, not guts and one speed, flat out. Keep up the good work Jon PS, just in case you interested, this is what get up to in my spare time, probably not your bag but hey... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qp2seoZnot1rj80 - (I'm bloke in white with the beard.)

Hi Jon, fully agreed mate - I've never known another motor to be quite as bullet-proof as the x04! Yeah I've looked at some of the Lima mechs - I do like them actually, though I've never experienced the 45xx - so I might avoid it if it is scary ;) Most of the diesels I have are Lima though - and I found them quite nice, similar to the Hornby ring-field, but more powerful! Cheers, Sam :)

@borderlands66067 жыл бұрын
No genius required - nothing else looks like the front end motion of a GWR 4-6-0, and the tender is pure Great Western. Enjoyed the motor show, keeping some of those old split chassis locos running is nothing short of heroic!
