Great video Shem! You show that to take magnificent photos you don’t need to overpack! Would only add a small head torch for early morning and evening, otherwise I’ll use your list as my template for the next safari!

Agree 100% Flemming - a head torch and its charging cable are always in my bag too. forgot to mention that one. Shem

Thank you for an interesting video. As I am off to Botswana on Safari in just two weeks, this is useful advice

Glad to hear. Botswana will be HOT at this time of year, so do pack in sunscreen and double lined water bottle. And then- enjoy. Shem

Thank you. I was amazed at how much more than a camera I carried - all from lessons learnt. And of course I forgot to mention lipbalm/zambuk- as Zendre below mentioned!

Thanks Shem for the helpful tips. I am just curious how you store your sewing needle without loosing it or sticking yourself as you go through your bag. Love your backpack with built in slots for memory cards. What brand is it? Best, e
@C4PhotoSafaris27 күн бұрын
Glad you enjoyed that. The needle is kept in a sliding piece of plactic - the little sets you get for sewing buttons on. I love carrying needles- I have one in my tioletry bag too. Its amazing how many uses they have! Shem

I forgot, the bag is a f-Stop bag. I have the Tilopa one- which is very large but always fits into an overhead locker - quite versatile really. There are many bags out there and I have tried lots of them. For me, this bag was/is the most comfortable I have used.

Does your camera bag have a frame and if so, have you ever had problems taking it on small bush planes where all luggage is meant to in soft bags without any metal frames?
@ShemCompion26 күн бұрын
It had a small metal frame in the portion that fits closest to my back. If I take the internal compartment out- the bag virtually folds flat. On small bush planes I sometimes put my bag below and am not really worried as I can pack it myself. Does this mean you have been to africa as you know about these great little planes and knowing the struggle of fitting in side them!?

@@ShemCompion Thanks. I visited the Chobe River and the Okavango Delta in 2015 and flew in a Cessna 206 Stationair and a Cessna 208 Caravan. My concern is that the pilot might refuse to carry a backpack with a metal frame. The frames on F-Stop and other similar backpacks, are fairly unobtrusive and it would be reassuring to know that this is unlikely to cause any issues.

@@michaelbissetphoto I fly in those planes frequently and have never had any trouble at all. Worst case scenario would be to take the internal compartment out and fold the bag flat. The mat would remove any issue of the frame. When we do fly on these small planes we always book freight seats - to accommodate the extra camera bags and weight! Shem

@@michaelbissetphoto the frames are unlikely to cause an issue as the main things that concern pilots on the bush planes is 1. Weight limit and 2. Does the bag fit? Sift bags like the f stop are perfect cause you can’t even take the iCU out. Clamshell cases are a pilots nightmare. I’ve seen 6 clamshells remain on the tarmac in Maun before. It’s not joke! 😂
