I’ve been lucky enough to visit the White House 8 times. Each time you notice something new. My favorite of the colored rooms is the Green Room. I especially like a coffee urn that’s on display in front of a sofa. The one time I haven’t been able to visit, but I always wished I could, was during the holidays to see the decorations. Between Christmas and New Year’s Day, special nighttime candle lit tours are offered during the evening hours. The marine band entertains in the Cross Hall performing Christmas music. If you ever plan on traveling to Washington, contact your congressman’s office to request tickets. It really is worth seeing.

Thank you for this interesting video. I knew little about White House history, and so I learned a lot.

The Truman renovation was 100% necessary as the whole thing was in danger of collapse. He bit the bullet after years of kicking the can down the road by his predecessors.

A major omission was the Truman reconstruction of 1948-1952, which gutted the entire White House to its 4 exterior walls and then rebuilt the interior from scratch using modern codes and materials. Also, Jacqueline Kennedy's 1961 White House Fine Arts Committee and redecoration of rhe public rooms set standards of historical integrity and property management still practiced today. And the East Room's use for large gatherings such as major presidential speeches, funerals, concerts, and diplomatic events might also be of interest to viewers.

I would LOVE to go spend time in the curator's office! My interest is in the history of the house itself, regardless of who is currently living there. I was also surprised when we toured in person in 2012 that the rooms seemed smaller in person than in pictures & video coverage, & that north portico, I really wonder how many people took that too sharply because that also seems more narrow when you see it in person.

So James Monroe moved back into the White House In 1871 after he been dead for 40 years? Did President Grant have any objections to this? How did this all work?
@mrbyzantine052810 күн бұрын
Sounds like the perfect time for Monroe's corspe to shuffle around and try to usher in a second era of good feelings...only since Grant hallucinated the entire thing in a drunken stupor, it led to the (first) Guilded Age instead.
