What's Inside the Yamaha MODX8 and how does it work?

Some people have experienced problems with the MODX's keys...
I haven't! My MODX8 was however full of smokey smell and nicotine, so I took it apart to clean and was surprised to find out that it is very nicely thought out and constructed!

In terms of the keybed's durability, what would you give it out of 10?

Well I’ve had it nearly two years and haven’t had any problems with it apart from one key that sometimes sticks... but some people received it broken, so I’d say 8/10 as even the broken ones still play, they’re just a bit noisy!

When you talk about the Graded Hammer Action keys I just thought, could you replace them with a better keybed, maybe a Fatar?

Quite possibly. The three issues I see would be: 1. Space or lack thereof, there really isn’t much room for a full hammer keyboard (it’s why the Montage is larger) 2. Weight, as the MODX8 Key bed is quite cleverly designed to be light as well as compact 3. Electronic integration, I don’t know how compatible a Fatar key bed would be even if it did fit. For all the work involved, weight disadvantage and guessing required, a used Montage 8 would be the best bet!

I ask this because I have a DGX-640 that I've played for about 5 years and the keys are quite noisy (with A above middle C making a clacking noise when you play it), so I was hoping they'd be a way to improve the "lifespan" of the instrument by replacing the keybed with something more premium. Oh well, looks like I got to win the lotto to purchase a Montage, even a second hand one. 😅

Is the action somewhere near to grand piano?

“Somewhere near”, yes. It isn’t the most perfect and responsive piano action and can be a little slow for complex and fast playing, but it is very good and incredible that the synth remains so light with this weighted action!

18:42 Even so with those foam bands the keybed is quite noisy, it would be very good to find a solution to this problem that is the complaint of many. The blue strip doesn’t help that much with the noisy Keybed. It doesn’t bother me so much! I place soft pads between all my synthesisers and the tables/stands they are placed on, it stops the noise travelling into the floor when you play really excited!

Thank you for the video, very interesting! Do you have any thoughts about if it would be possible to replace this keybed (GHS) with a GH-action? I have a Yamaha CP-40 whose keys are really nice. No idea if the form factor is standard...

Sorry I never saw this comment... In short I have no idea about the GH action, but I kind of doubt it would fit. There is very limited space where the hammers fit because of the shape of the moulded plastic base and how close the hammers get to the circuit boards in the back.

Just what I expected from Yamaha (or Roland, or Korg for that matter): an empty box, which they charge an arm and a leg for. And that's just the start. They want extra money for extra instruments. The keybed itself is quite OK for a synth, even better than what I expected. But that's where the optimism ends. Why can't Behringer clone it, in a rack version, for a fraction of the price?

It’s not just synths, but honestly I’d much rather pay for this than a Samsung or Apple phone at the same price! It’s just the way with a lot of modern technology and marketing. Any cheaper it wouldn’t be in the “right market segment” for it or whatever nonsense they want to peddle... Oh and lord only knows how bad the samples were and floppy the case would be if behringer cloned it 😂 Theres a reason they have stuck to analogue synths!

The key bed is not good only had mine from 2019 and I broke a key!! I never broke a key since 1984!!!!! On any Yamaha or Rolland

I've got broken keys. Under warranty but it takes a month to get repaired. Not happy with Yamaha. I guess they don't commit seppuku anymore when they make shoddy products.

@@JDStoneCreations $2000 is not "budget," and it's sold as a pro instrument. It should be played under normal circumstances without keys literally breaking off internally. And the repaired instrument broke within 2 days. Exact same key. Sounds like a QC issue that Yamaha didn't used to have.

You know what, I am firmly convinced that is the case! I mean the Montage does have a built in switch mode power supply, a nicer quality keybed and a metal case, but control wise (and therefore circuit board wise) there is only the right hand part select and a different location for the mod controls. Honestly I’d take the MODX any day even if I had Montage money... then I’d spend that on other keyboards. Or rather should I say DID spend it on other keyboards!

@@JDStoneCreationsI bet that is the case and i bought the modx and spent the rest on buying other things like sound card monitors headphones etc. You're paying a lot for bells and whistles and there is nothing wrong with that but to me its a lot more money to get that. I'm happy with less buttons and plastic as that suits me and i'm not going to hurt my back lifting it. Love and respect to those that love the keyboard. Thanks for the reply.
