I work EMS here in the US. A year ago last winter my partner and I went to a home for a call of an 80-year-old woman needing a lift assist. The first thing we noticed was that the home was clogged inside with stacks of magazines, books, boxes, and clothes. Almost no room to get around. The only part of the house that wasn't cluttered was the bed set up in the front room. After getting the woman up and taking to her and her husband my partner noticed that they had a stack of newspapers right next to a large space heater. After turning it off and moving it we were shocked to learn it had been there for days and that their house hadn't gone up like dry tinder. We had to call the fire department to do an inspection of their home

18:43 A wrong move, even after arriving at Hospital can still end in someone becoming disabled. I was caught in a property fire once. Closest thing to Hell on earth I have ever experienced. In a heartbeat you cannot see your hand in front of your face for black smoke. The heat and smoke affects every part of your body. Externally and internally. Forget about trying to breath properly until you can get away from the smoke. If you cannot get out, in a matter of seconds you become confused and disorientated. Always, always have working smoke alarms and an escape plan. Prevention, is a great defence against fire too. Surge protection for plugs and electrical devices is a must also. Most fire departments offer free home safety checks last I heard.

Although the 9/11 attack was in the US, I think the sentiment applies to first responders around the world: On 9/11 we lost approximately 422 first responders. Some were in their first week of the job, some were looking at retirement just around the corner. Maybe a handful were covering shifts for a co-worker that had gone on vacation - and a very special few came in to work on their off day when the first news reports came across the wire. All were family or friend to someone. When they arrived on scene to the towers on fire, they knew this was going to be bad, but all of them put on their gear and began trudging up the stairwells. Then the towers fell. Some died immediately, some were slowly killed over years due to the result of the collapse. Thing is though, not one of those firefighters, police officers or EMT/Paramedics would have wanted to be anywhere else. They all knew the dangers but showed up anyway. So today, when you hear the sirens or see the lights, maybe say a little thank-you or a prayer if you are so inclined, for the safety of the people on that engine, truck or in the ambulance. They have someone waiting for them at the end of the day too.

Had that same fire happened today, I would be dead for sure & the building would have been lost.

@walterkronkitesleftshoe668410 ай бұрын
They aren't allowed to retire early. What DID piss me off was when I was in the job, you had to work 15 years before you got your final pay increment (or long service pay). I did my fifteen years... and almost exactly on the day when I received my first long service increment, the government decided that "the long service increment was discriminatory against women" and so decided that EVERYONE got the increment after their first 4 years... meaning me and lots of others had lost out on a LOT of pay that we'd all had to wait 15 years for... then when we finally got there EVERYONE was given it !!! For myself it equated to nearly £15,000 in lost pay, and that was at 1980s/90s prices !!!

Males have more muscle mass and the ability to lift and carry more. In emergencies I'm not sure how a female will be able to carry a heavy man

@@waterproof_teabags3592 Yet women have been nurses since the beginning of medicine and have been perfectly capable of handling bodies. Women might be smaller, but they're not weak. Big muscular men can't lift infinitely heavier and heavier people either. This is why co-operation has been invented. A little helping hand, in a job, where team effort is required, is better than having to prove your "worth". Now tell everyone how you're so much better than women.

@BW630 Veisto nurses always operate in a team environment and now days always operate in a safe area where they always have control and equipment to help them without many risks to themselves . Fire fighters are much different, they don't always have control of the situations and have to drag and help alot of unconscious people without equipment and the help of fellow fire-fighters. So now quote me where I said I'm better ?

Woman shouldn't be in the job... That was when it started going down hill. They took away a LOT of the entry requirements in the 1990s. "Minimum height" was discriminatory, basic strength tests "favoured males". Merseyside where this was filmed ended up employing a number of short arses, including women around 5 ft tall who could NOT reach the equipment in the top shelves of the lockers.... so at a cost of over 1 million pounds to the taxpayer, the equipment stowage on the ENTIRE fleet of engines was adapted to have special "drop down shelves" so the midgets could reach the equipment on them.... The "seven dwaves" had difficulty climbing up into the cabs and so as the fire authority replaced the fleet of engines in phases, all the new engines had to have expensive "drop down" pneumatic suspensions fitted to lower the cab steps so they could climb in. I kid you not !!! They even had 2 women who were so short that the standard BA sets, with their adjustable backplates, could not be shortened enough to fit their tiny female frames and so at CONSIDERABLE public cost the brigade commisioned the manufacturers (Draeger of Germany) to build two specially adapted BA sets to be personally issued to the two women in question !!! I worked with a number of the women and it was often embarrasing watching them struggling with heavy equipment or jammed couplings, and if you offered to help you'd be scowled at for being "patronising". "The Job" went to ratshit after all that. I await the day when they fit hydraulic "chair lifts" to the fire engine crew cabs, because after all, who are you or I to step on the dreams of a wheelchair bound paraplegic who wants to be a fireman? Take me back to these days.

Crazy to see other depts work. I see no dept is more fierce then the FDNY. These guys were doing nothing at that fire

Its the way the UK fire Brigade appears to have gone. If there's no fire risk, or danger of fire spread they just leave it to burn... In my day you got your arse kicked and were told to "get in there!!!".

Would that be the same FDNY that had hundreds of firefighters just standing around in a lobby on 9/11? That FDNY?
