I play on both JP and NA servers. That was the first thing I noticed when I went to Limsa. On NA it's loud and chat is active. On JP it's remarkably quiet but there's a ton of people at the Aetheryte. Dungeon runs are a little different also. One wipe on a JP server, no commendation. Even a decent tank won't get a commendation. It needs to be a flawless run, or nothing. I think the commendation is how they passively express their feelings on a run. The outside world on a JP server also tends to be quite empty. I don't see any hunt trains. Whereas on a NA server, there are always people running around doing things in the open world and hunts are filled with people.

@@hippopotatomoose tbf, the "you wipe once you aint get a commendation" is kinda childish in my opinion. if the wipe costs the entire run? or made it singificantly harder? sure. but in general?

@@hippopotatomoose False on multiple accounts. At least now, one year later. Can't say about the commendations though. My experience is sprouts don't know how to commend, non-JP players (like SEA) tend to not commend at all (from friends' POVs and strangers alike, often verified SEA by search info), and the wipe thing... eh. not all the time. If they're really pissed, even JP would leave immediately Hunt trains, well... A mix of relying on EN people for tracking, but they have a crowd in faloop

a nice quiet game to enjoy, patient and polite people, letting others know they are new, no large FC where you dont know most people and no toxic behaviour. i gotta say, that sounds like heaven to me, ive left many FCs because they just kept growing and growing and my autism doesnt do well with large crowds. i always greet and tell people if its my first time or dont remember the content or play on a job wich i havent played in awhile. but i wouldnt go over to a japanese server because i wouldnt want to be a nuisance to the people there, i dont know much japanese so i probably would be a bother to the people there.

FCs here are more or less composed of buddies / friends, so most members are actually buddies IRL or at least already know each other outside of the game (Discord, Forums etc...). So on top of what the vid says, most FCs are more of a personal group of buddies than a large guild. That's not to say there aren't any big ones here, I know quite a few notable big FCs that cater to both newbies and hardcore players as well but most are small. This is the same experience I have on other JP server MMOs as well and imo I prefer it as it's much more chill.

As a EN Player in JP server and joined a FC with all JP players, I can tell those are quite true. Although the Silent thing isn't true honestly, you can still hear people chat in say most often than not, and people using emotes in chat, just not spammy. Shout are more rare but present not entirely gone. I think you're recording at a time where in JP is night time/early morning, so it's not as busy Other thing I'd like to add is that when messing up a mechanic or wipe, after apologizing some JP players would even reply with (doma) or どんまい which reads "donmai" which basically mean "don't mind"

I will remember this for a long time. Back when I played FFXI around the time when it first came out and I was leveling with a group of people in one of the earlier grinding level areas (I think it was Selbina? It's been so long I can't remember the exact name). It was a bad pull and I died, they kicked me from the group after saying how bad of a player I was. I was very scared to run with a group again, but later (or earlier, since I worked night shift and came home from work around 5am) I tried again and did a level grind with a Japanese group of players. Same thing happened, I died and I thought I was going to get yelled at and kicked and apologized profusely and told them I'd leave so they could get a more competent healer. They were the friendliest and kindest people I had ever played with in any game and helped me keep playing a game I loved.

Thanks for the video! It was really interesting! Greetings, letting other player know you are new, apologizing, and thanking at the end all sounds very similar to me coming from NA servers. I think the key difference I noticed was not pointing out the mistakes of others. Now, in my experience it doesn't happen too often, but when it does it really kills the vibe of going through a duty. Not to be confused with educating someone on a mechanic they might not be familiar with. What is the Tank Healer dynamic like on a JP server? In my experience on NA servers it seems to fall into three groups of normal, memey, or a conversation that is sometimes better not discussed unless you want to start a fight.

I've played on every data center in FFXIV and I have lvl80 on Elemental (JP) Primal (NA) and Chaos (EU) and playing on Elemental is the most fun because it has the nicest players in the game and I would say the most experience players when it come to doing duty roulettes. For me EU servers are the worst when it comes to the 3 regions because I've played on 4 different servers on EU and I've noticed that they have the most toxic players (yes even more toxic than NA) and the least skilled players because I remember when I was trying to farm the World of Darkness healer glam, it was a constant wipe on the first boss and to the point that they vote abandons so many runs because people fail to do mechanics all the time. NA defiantly have more helpful players than EU and I think it is mostly because every speaks English but I think JP servers have the more skilled players when it come to doing dungeons and raids.

It seems just cultural- I have played WoW and now FFXIV on both NA and EU and there is kind of a change, and being an American I noticed a lot of Europeans have the generic stereotypes in general chat and are a bit more hostile towards NA people moreso in WoW, but they are less likely to go all toxic when something goes wrong. I normally try to at least say a couple things in the others' language if possible (I started WoW Classic on a majority Latin American server). I find that RP realms in WoW are more receptive towards foreigners (I assume it's due to people being able to separate Real Life from the game easily). I can also say that in Dota2 a lot of Peruvians, Colombians, and Chileans queue US East servers as well as South America & Brazil, and there can be some animosity towards each other.

Silence in the cities is the biggest difference I think. Kind of explains why 1.0 had no public chat channels in beta. You had to be in a linkshell for any ambient banter and it puzzled us Americans to no end. Greetings and goodbyes are maybe inconsistent but they are lot more common in FFXIV than in any other game. Not calling people out publicly I think is just our culture no longer teaching kids any manners. kids tend to have to learn the hard way at say real life work that it is really not a good idea. The debate pops up on reddit often in the form of people trying to justify themselves after getting chewed out for "offering" advice. If there is anyone bit of advice I could give a new IT intern it is this... Dont tell people how to do their job unless they specifically ask you or you are explicitly their mentor or boss. Just don't. doesn't matter if you are right or not. just don't.

Elemental is the closest you can get to an NA culture in the Japanese servers. I live in SEA, and OCE has been non existent for so long that we’ve built a community in Elemental. All accurate, this. Shouts and yells are rare and mostly come from either non-JP players or are invites (FC, hunt or otherwise). I’ve seen what appear to be friends who are standing next to each other talk to each other in /s, and they do not repeatedly hit their emotes. I’ve yet to encounter toxicity from all-JP parties (which is honestly uncommon in my DC-it’s always gonna be a mix of JP only and EN only/JP and EN, but a friend recalls a time where in a trial, there was an AFKing DRG in the party who only started moving when Echo hit in. And when certain gear dropped, they were clearly waiting for everyone to roll. When my friend rolled higher for the gear, the DRG swore at my friend in Japanese… Additionally, some Worlds are less tolerant of foreigners than others-in less tolerant Worlds, the locals may get passive aggressive. But most importantly, sasu ga JP, people can be a hive mind and if you play dead at a busy city, there is a chance you can attract a battalion who will play dead with you.

I used to play WOW on and off for the pass years, once skip 1 full expansion due to RL reason. Might play FF14 in the future. Heres my view. I find that the silence is gold part disturbing. A city chat should be busy, at least talk about in game related thing, advertising your crafting profession, asking for help on in-game things. Moderate advertise about guild recruitment. All that is fine. Definitely don't sell Real Money Trade, and don't force politics on to others. We used to greet people in dungeon in wow, but with Looking for Dungeon feature (system randomly select players from random servers for dungeon run) made greeting kinda pointless, you most likely never going to meet them again in the future. If your game is set to English but you play on a JP server, then JLPT N2 would be sufficient for player-to-player communication. You're better off grabbing a textbook and getting your basics right. But if you wish to play the JP version of the game, then even N1 wouldn't be enough; I have to check up words every now and then, and that drastically slows down the intended pace of the game.
