If you're a manufacturing history buff, then a visit is a must.
While the shipyard was closed in 1996, the legacy of Mare Island lives on through its preserved buildings, dry docks, and historic sites. Today, it's a blend of historical landmarks, industrial relics, and a growing community. Exploring Mare Island offers a glimpse into the maritime history of the region.

When the City took possession of the former Naval Shipyard many locals especially were warned GPS likely will not work within the Island for various reasons. Even the Police were confused when summoned to a call there.

my dad was in the Navy and stationed at Mare Island in the early 1960s. I went to Vallejo high school for a year or two. Dad was the maintenance officer for the Naval transmitter site on the west side. We lived a couple blocks from the Rodman Bowling alley where I worked as a pin boy.

The Mare Island/Tennessee Street exit is one of those I-80 exits I driven by a million times and never got off on. It was definitely cool to see what exists there. Maybe I'll check it out when I eventually go to a Cal Maritime DIII basketball game one of these years. And I can totally sympathize about not filming things or not doing something you should do while filming. I thought it was great you mentioned it.

Hey Paul! My Sis-in-law is absolutely fascinated by Mare Island. She almost bought a home back in the early 2000's there. Her and my brother used to golf there, but the golf course is no longer there, as is most other amenities. It is worth checking out, at least once! There is a trail or two, maybe?? I bet if there is any elevation to the trail, there should be some epic views? 🥤😎

You did not talk about the Bay Trail, The Preserve, the oldest Navy Church west of the Mississippi, and the Oldest cemetery west of the Mississippi.

I did not! We don't hike 🤣 so none of our videos typically include trails. Yes, we could have included more history. I, myself learned of its history and I'm so thankful for that, enough that we will return! TY! 🥤

If you go over to the side that has the abandon golf course, be careful there are thousands of rattlesnakes on that island. I haven’t been to the distillery or the Godfather. I will have to check those out next time. Thank you for sharing!

Hey! Thanks for watching. Funny you say that, as my brother and sis-in-law used to golf there often They really miss that course, and on this trip, we did take a drive there and saw it's demise. I mean, my brother was aware that the course had gone under, but we didn't get out!

There is a trail that leads up to the Islands highest point. It includes a navy cemetery and views of the bay and former golf course. I say good riddance to the gold course. Will have million dollar homes on it in a few years. Trail parking lot is at the end of Azuar and is open Fri - Sunday.

I went there and tried to stay in an Airbnb, but it turned out to be infested with bed bugs. Sadly, I didn’t get to explore and left immediately. Stayed in Berkeley instead.
